Illinois and Indiana
Two bordering Midwestern states in these United States. Both also border Lake Michigan and the Ohio River.
And yes, both have a lot in common, starting with the fact that, according to some metrics, both share Chicagoland, or the Chicago metropolitan area. Well yeah, sure Chicagoland is mostly in Illinois, as is...well...Chicago, the third largest city in the country, but Northwest Indiana is also often lumped into the Chicago metro. Chicagoland makes up around 65% of the entire population of Illinois and 10% of the entire population of Indiana.
Both are part of the Rust Belt, a region of the country known for declining industry and run down factories. Even decades after most of these factories have shut down, several cities in both states continue to lose population each year.
And yet, manufacturing is still a major industry in both. Indiana is the country’s leading steel producer and second largest car manufacturing state. Illinois is known for making machinery, electrical equipment, transportation equipment, and food processing. Related to this, both rank towards the bottom of all 50 states in terms of pollution, although Illinois ranks better.
Other major industries in both include healthcare, retail, and education.
The average age of residents in both is the same. (38)
The biggest religion in both is Christianity, but of those more identify as Roman Catholic in Illinois and more identify as Evangelical Protestant in Indiana. Oh, and Illinois residents are more religious, overall.
Both have very similar climates. Specifically, a humid continental climate throughout most of the states, and humid subtropical climate in the southern portions. Basically, the further south you go in both states, the more precipitation and the more hot it gets in the summer and less cold it gets in the winter. Both get tornadoes, but flooding is definitely the most common natural disaster in both. For thousands of years, various American Indian tribes lived in the area.
Illinois gets its name from another French dude named René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, who explored the area in the 1600s. He named a river after a group of American Indian tribes known collectively as the Illinois Confederation, or Illiniwek, which translates to “the best people.” A Philadelphia trading company promptly came out that way to make some money, and, long story short, ended up working out a deal to get some land out there. They called the area “Indiana,” or “Land of the Indians.” Wow, how creative.

I lived in Indiana for the first 22 years of my life. I’ve lived in Illinois for the last 4 years of my life. Outside of Chicago, there is very little to do in Illinois. Also, it’s more expensive to live here, even outside of Chicago. I live 4.5 hours from Chicago, but my house was still $30,000 more than my brother’s house of a similar age, size, and condition. Additionally, I pay over 3X more in property tax than my parents in Indiana. Groceries tend to be higher here. Gas is more expensive. I made less money in Indiana, but was more comfortable there. My wife and I want to move south, so I’ll probably never move back to Indiana, but I can’t wait until I leave Illinois.

As an Indiana resident, I am jealous of Illinois' nuclear power plants. Our reliance on coal is devastating to the air and water quality. While Illinois is 30% coal for electricity, we're about 70%. It's a massive shame Marble Hill Nuclear Power Plant, the sister plant of Illinois' Byron and Braidwood nuclear, was never finished in southern Indiana.

So I've lived in indiana for practically all my life. My family moved there when we were 6 and I had lived there up until 3 months ago, for a grand total of 18 years of being a Hoosier. Illinois definitely has that Chicagoland vs the rest divide, but i can attest that the northern part of the state is different than the southern part. I grew up in Northern Indiana, and i can say there is definitely a great influence from Illinois and Michigan where i grew up. Then I went to college in East Central Indiana starting in 2013, and I just gotta say it was a bit of a culture shock. I went from growing up in a city where people spoke in a fairly typical Midwestern dialect, to moving 2.5 hours south and all the sudden people are speaking with southern accents everywhere. There have been numerous times where i just simply couldn't understand what people were saying. There is a bit of a north/south divide in indiana, with the north generally being a bit more urban and generally being better off than the southern portion of the state (at least from my experience). The biggest cultural difference is Northern Indiana residents seem to look up to Michigan and over to illinois and Ohio, whereas southern Indiana residents seem to look down more towards Kentucky and even Tennessee.

@G Ren I don't give a fuck about looking cool...FOOL.. You go look cool...I promise I can buy and sell you 500 times...The National Debt has been skyrocketing since 1980 throughout all PRESIDENTS.There are two different things here...They are not the same at all..The deficit is the amount added per a given year, the national debt is the total accumulated debt for all years plus interest ...Under no president has the total National Debt decreased since 1980..Their have been some Presidents since like Clinton who claimed a reduction but it was later proven that Clinton transferred Social Security funds to make that claim ..

@richarddobson3138

@G Ren Again Deficit and Debt are two different animals when talking about U.S. debt. In October 2008 the National Debt was 7.7 trillion..Late in that month GW Bush doubled that with a stroke of a pen bailing out Wall Street. The debt was 15.5 trillion the day Obama Took office...It was 22 trillion the day he left...Its now at least 26 trillion.. What this means is that in the last 12 years the National Debt has increased 18.3 trillion dollars or over 2.5 times the amount it was in 2008, which in 2008 had taken 232 years to get to that point..We've almost tripled that amount in 12 years. No President not one has done anything to slow it down since Nixon I'm a fiscal conservative but I am also a social liberal..You can't have and preserve liberalism if there's no money in the bank...I'm sorry I exploded at you, but the financial situation in this country is just so serious now its beyond belief..We cannot react to it with the Kids Gloves approach from the past..Budgets are going to have to be slashed, taxes are going to have to be raised and a lot of hardship is going to have to be gone through to have any chance at all of saving this country.
