Too much
too little
or not enough
too fat
too thin
or nobody
laughter or
tears
or immaculate
haters
lovers
non-concern
an old guy in a cheap room
with a photograph of Marilyn Monroe
many old guys in cheap rooms without
any photographs at all
there is a loneliness in this world so great
that you can see it in the slow movements of
the hands of a clock
there is a loneliness in this world so great
that you can see it blinking in neon signs
in Vegas, in Baltimore, in Munich
there are people so tired
so strafed
so mutilated by love or no
love
that buying a bargain can of tuna
in a supermarket
is their greatest moment
their greatest victory
we don't need new governments
new revolutions
we don't need new men
new women
we don't need new ways
good Columbian
coke
dildoes
watches that give you the date
people are not good to each other
one on one.
Marx be damned
the sin is not the totality of certain systems.
Christianity be damned
the sin is not the killing of a God.
people are just not good to each other.
we are afraid
we think that hatred means strength
what we need is less brilliance
what we need is less instruction
what we need are less poets
what we need are less Bukowskies
what we need is more
beer
a typist
more finches
we don't think about the terror of one person
aching in one place
alone
untouched
unspoken to
watering a plant
being without a telephone that will never
ring
because there isn't one.
more haters than lovers
slices of doom like taffeta
people are not good to each other
people are not good to each other
people are not good to each other
and the beads swing and the clouds cloud
and the dogs piss upon the roses
and the killer beheads the child like taking a bite
out of an ice cream cone
and the ocean comes in and out
in and out
under the direction of a senseless moon
and people are not good to each other.

I knew a man once, troubled by his life. He was married to an alcoholic and struggled with anxiety. He once took me to the supermarket, he told me "This is the best time to come". We walked up and down the isles like soldiers marching to a battlefield, it was 8 'o' clock and they had just put out all of the reduced items ready for the next day. He searched for over an hour for the best deals, this was one of the few times I ever saw him smile, as he picked up that 3/4 off meat, for a moment, he seemed alive. I will never forget that day, such a mundane task overflowing with the pain of his life.

A poem, an ode, a song to be told? So bold it warms the cold. The song I speak, the poem bespeeched, the ode not defeat it is to life I speak. With each battle scar, life brings It can't help but sing that life is but a dream. I conquer nightmares and daydream worse, so life can't put me in the hearse it is doing its worse, but on the other side of worse is best and to this I attest I love the mess. Grab a broom sweep the streets and play life's song on repeat. mop rain playing games, they say I'm insane... Good people everywhere hidden behind mask, learned to wear. They say swear and learned how to not dare, because they cared. Caring is but a fault, isn't the same as love I know. because caring doesn't do what love could. Caring you get worn, you cared enough to hurt your heart but you forget to love all your parts. From me to you to them and they I say you forget. All you need is love. Not a care in the world when your in love, with "ME" seee. because in me is love for everyone and every being. I can see past the mask if I am up to the task. I can outlast negative thought and soon it will be forgot because all this isn't for naught. I learned what was taught, life's teacher, makes me want to be life's preacher. Speaking thoughts that others would not. My heart hurts my mind is blank, but I'm tell you what it really is I think. I love to love it is just hard to love "ME" because then I have to face reality. the only one who could love me like I wanted to be love, well some say THat being resides above. but to me I know that love is within, and it begins with Me, my long time friend. with me from the begin, and i'm certain, i'll be with me to the "end", but I can't conjure an end for me and my friend, so I suppose my end will be when a new life begins.

@@True38 dark vs light tangled in an apparent fight to devil's delight. But it isn't dark vs light no, it is dark and light from night to day everything is okay. I say I say. we play to play, but when we may forget our way then the play isn't fun, and we'd have it done. I know because i play and it stopped being fun, i didn't love anyone. Most of all not me you see, and then I hated to be. because well. I just didn't feel like I was me. But I still want to play just give me a break, i need to take for heavens sake. A sore loser, scorned by pain sure it can be lame, but a perspective is that, someone looking through eyes you do not, if it wasn't needed they would have never been. my friend. A negative is nothing without a positive to compare. So for every negative I see, remember how it be. @@jamiejamie9549 One thing to remember is that all of these depressing pieces of literature may be true for some but it doesn’t mean we are all damned to the same fate. Not everyone is alone; and not everyone is bad. These works of art were made by sad lonely writers who are just writing about the way that they see things. That doesn’t mean that’s the way things actually are. It is all an interpretation. The beautiful thing about life is that we are all free to our own interpretations. The thing is that you can´t see people in such a systemized way. People often do good things for each other, but its not that simple. We could say for example, that many people do "good" things but for reasons you don´t even know at all. One is example is that video where a homeless man gives his life for another person that was being pointed with a gun. Well maybe he just wanted to feel that he could be useful, maybe it was a mixture between many feelings inside of him. Sometimes you are "good" in a narcisistic way. Sometimes you choose not to be good in order to also be assertive. Sometimes you do "good" and you end up doing worse. We don´t know. We just been told that certain things are sins, we have realized that certain behaviours are not good for us and that we should promote others. Sometimes we feel miserable for whatever reason and we want to be like that. Sometimes we want to have more or you have an ambition to live in a certain manner so you act in a certain way. We can´t predict ourselves. We also have a huge ethical struggle since we live in a competitive social structure which is actually "good" since it makes the society more competent and at the same time we have to be good and treat us as "equals". I notice that many people solve this ethical dilemma by becoming cynical.

Those last lines. "And the ocean comes in and out. In and out. Under the direction of a senseless moon. And people are not good to each other." My interpretation of this is that human beings are bound by nature to do horrible things to other people. We are learning more about this with genetics. Our cultures are largely what has pacified the violent human instinct.

my interpretation is that in the midst of everything we can't control, the ocean being directed by the moon, mother nature's unmerciful hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards that kill everything, death, our inevitable extinction; we can choose to be good to each other while we're alive. Help each other thru all the suffering while god sits and watches. But we still choose not to. But tbh I do think lots of people help each other. We just remember the ones who dont better.

Well stated...I think so too. I try to be kind and giving much of the time...the world is such an angry place...Vonnegut tells us to be kind anyway even though we won't be rewarded. I agree with that...Christ tells us that also along with many other spiritual beings. 'Love one another as I have loved you'...that is the challenge of being a 'true' Christian.

Sometimes I feel lost in this world of ours. Many people are here, and I often forget how ahead of others I am, and I often feel like I'm further behind in life than many others. Why do I feel this lack in life? Is it because I am relaxed on a couch in Italy, while my home awaits my return in Los Angeles; or because I left my job to travel Europe for two months, and now credit card debt is accumulating, and I don't feel like I want to work it off. Why does short term gratification feel so much better than pain and suffering? What is my purpose, for I feel, I can not find it and it does not want to present itself to me. How much annoyance I feel with myself and the world in which I live in, for being so convoluted.

Illneas! Keep making them man. These are the kinds of media marriages that can show the value of poetry to someone young, inexperienced, ignorant. I think too many people read poetry in their head with their own voice, and it doesn't make sense. To hear the inflection this old man uses, paired with the tone of the songs you are choosing, really highlight the depth and message of the poetry. I think they're sensational, far greater productions than a vast majority of the mindless bullshit most 'artists' put out. I appreciate the wisdom of these great poets, the beauty of these wonderful songs, and the normal everyday backdrops showing how everyone is living it. Always looking forward to another breath of inspiration.

When you put on a uniform(any uniform (bukowski the mailman)), you become a slave/soldier/statistic.
