A VERY necessary video. She is SO SO spectacular as both a singer and an educator. I think there is room to be had for discussion about what constitutes as "style" in modern pop music, because some things are indeed artistic expression and should be respected as such, but on the other side of it, much of what has become the style of modern mainstream music vocally speaking has developed out of a LACK of care for the voice. As someone who has studied voice since youth, it was refreshing to hear someone of her stature speak publicly about mainstream vocalization in this manner, because i feel many within the classical field who come to places like youtube try not to say anything to offend, but she didn't parse her words at all which was so great. Singers like Mariah had a great voice, but from a technical standpoint she has always had glaring issues with her technique even since her debut-daydream era (that many hail as her best era). We have seen time and time again singers who dont care for their voice or proper technique have had to pay the price especially now that the greats of the by-gone era are in older-age. I think its time for people to start being honest about vocals and vocal technique without focusing on the deified images of these mainstream singers. It was great that you showed the Mado Robin clip as well, because yes you indeed CAN sing that high properly most people just don't and can't, so they shouldn't (which i think was her main point). I feel once people have better examples and we can start focusing on the issues with mainstream vocalists, we can achieve a higher level of vocal technique even in genres outside of classical, but with the instant gratification culture that we have now, I don't know if we'll see that anytime soon, unfortunately lol.

And I would argue that her vocal troubles came from singing roles that were too heavy for her, specifically Lucie de Lammermoor. To me it sounds like she was really throwing her voice around at that time, trying to make a much heavier sound in her upper middle voice. Then once she lost some of her highest notes, she ventured into heavier rep, making the problem even worse. I wonder what would have happened with her voice if she hadn’t tried to sing so heavily.
@danclarkcastillo71782 ай бұрын
@@Areyouserious9882 Which is why classical singers need to know, understand, and work with their voice types. Light sopranos are supposed to sing like light sopranos and shouldn't attempt to sing over an orchestra arranged for dramatic sopranos. Mezzos shouldn't train as sopranos. Heavy sopranos shouldn't try to lighten their voices and take roles for lyric sopranos. Doing so will damage their voices.
@jenniferhiemstra5228Ай бұрын
@@Areyouserious9882 I don’t think Lucia was too heavy for her..I think she just seemed to attack everything without much nuance. It was all heavy attacks and not much else. I have a similarly light voice to hers and do a lot of Lucia’s material pretty easily because it’s fits my tessitura really well, but also I have to play it smart when phrasing it out and dynamics too, because it’s a decently long role to get through. As long as lighter voices know how to play the long game, they can absolutely can sing more robust material. I’m NOT saying I’m gonna be doing Wagner or similar material that’s very clearly meant for more heavier/dramatic voices, but there’s a middle ground that can be found if you’re smart.

Your original video was great, I hope you can put it back on the channel. As somebody who primarily listens to opera but also loves Mariah Carey's music, I think your analysis was very on point. Mariah's fans get very offended when her vocal problems are mentioned, which is sad, delusional, and childish. The objective truth of her vocal decline is there, and that is okay. That doesn't diminish how good she used to sound in her prime, or how amazing her vocal abilities used to be. Maria Callas, crowned by many as the best opera singer of the past century, also had a vocal decline for whichever reasons. That didn't make her any less important or worthy. I had always loved Isola's voice since I heard her in the Rigoletto quartet alongside the great Sutherland/Pavarotti/Nucci. She is an ideal Maddalena, for sure check that up in KZbin. You should speak your mind, especially when it’s well researched and well argued, regardless of if fans don’t like it. Pop singers are not perfect (duhh) and people need to get over that already. Really it shouldn’t even be controversial. Everyone knows one of core tenets of singing is the control of air. Overuse of / pushing of too much air is like wildfire for the vocal folds, it dries them out, they lose elasticity over time, etc. With most pop singers using this register you can hear how much air is going/being pushed through, sounds like there’s a lack of proper cord closure and support and it’s disconnected (ie probably not healthy/sustainable).

To me i feel like the beauty of non-classical singing is that there are ways of playing with the voice that aren't restricted to "good" or "healthy" technique, but what she is saying is a fact. A whistle register from the throat like Mariah's is not healthy, and though Chante it kinda proves that i won't always fully destroy the voice but with Mariah is does show it can. I think Mariah's personal relationship to her voice and her strained relationship with her operatic mother, i think she felt sorta slighted then and wanted to divorce herself from any restriction or critique of her vocals. It's sad because imagine if she had gotten more training, with her natural talent she would have truly been unstoppable.

As a fan of singing in general, I can imagine that your comment was largely from disappointment for someone as talented as Mariah to have their gift eroded by an ability that may have well contributed to the unnecessary degradation of her voice. And as Dr. Isola Jones put succinctly, they must feel incredibly depressed and saddened when you were capable of so much but no longer have access to that level of fluidity and expression. As a fan of Mariah the artist, despite her vocal state - which is none of my business how she monitors her health - I'm grateful for everything she's given us and everything she put into her music and will never admonish her for baring her soul in ways that helped so many to heal. But this has educational value for those who want to understand the voice and want to understand the consequences of replicating other singers without the proper education.

Everyone who wants to whistle like Mariah should pay attention to this video. The whistle voice is more often than not damaging to the vocal folds. Just like what Isola Jones says (or at least what I think she says), the human voice is not designed to vibrate at such high frequencies. People who do this usually have "holes" in their upper register. That's just the start. I know people who love whistling because doing so makes them feel awesome. But they can't access their falsetto. Or their voices flip an octave or two when they try to belt.
@Sttephy302 ай бұрын
Many people that whistle can access their falsetto, chest and other registers. Chante Moore is a prime example. Mariah’s voice was just fragile and her lifestyle was a lot. Many whistle singers have good voices for the most part tho.

@Sttephy30 nah not really from what I've seen from chante she has very decent belting.I dont think she can belt high and then directly hit a high C using headvoice,for most of the singers I knew including her that using whistle doesn't really have a good headvoice or they are almost none Existing,that's what maybe he meant by having a hole in the voice.The whistling thing making chante disconnected from her chest voice to her headvoice.You need to put into account that Mariah is famous and have been gone to tour after tour for her entire life if chante is famous and been singing countless tour after tour I bet she will having the same situation like mariah after whistling years after years.
@peterjonesdelacruz2 ай бұрын
@@Sttephy30 then good for her. again, I didn't not make a blanket statement that ALL whistlers will run into problems, so your gripes are misplaced. There are always conditions and exceptions. That's why I didn't say that the whistle voice is ALWAYS damaging, but more often than not, it is. Chante Moore probably doesn't use her whistle voice as extensively as Mariah does and doesn't tour as much as Mariah does. I don't listen to her, so I don't know. Again, if it works for her, then good for her. But just because Chante Moore can do it, doesn't mean every other person who can whistle should do it too every chance they get.

I really like Miss Isola; she's very professional and truly a remarkable singer. However, when she said that whistles don't have vibrato, she seems to be unaware of Mariah Carey, Minnie Riperton, or Chante Moore's use of the whistle register. Mariah, for instance, has many examples where she uses vibrato in her whistle notes.

I think it’s also the “type” of vibrato. Strictly speaking whistle register doesn’t/can’t have a laryngeal vibrato (we/they think - it’s still kind of up in the air because it’s not fully known how whistle really works) but you potentially can get a vibrato on whistle register by making slight fluctuations in breath pressure. So it’s not exactly wrong to say there’s no vibrato in whistle but it’s also not not wrong. 😂
@BlackMusicArchive2 ай бұрын
Isola also mentions that some women can take the head voice up to double high C (C7), which means for some women whistle would begin there, you will be very hard-pressed to find anyone singing in the 7th octave with vibrato Minnie Riperton and Mariah Carey included.
@victorrodrigueesoficial2 ай бұрын
@@BlackMusicArchive There are a few examples of using vibrato in the 7th octave, like when Mado Robin hit her D7 (the highest note she ever recorded) or Maria Remola (who also has a D7 somewhere here, and I still think her highest notes are somewhat "better" than Dessay's, even though I prefer Natalie's tone and quality). Also: for Mariah, you have "You're So Cold," "Emotions" (same example you showed), "Bringing on the Heartbreak," "I Wish You Knew," and a few more. If you mean actual laryngeal vibrato, that would be a little hard, but it's still vibrato. Also we have Yma Sumac in "Chuncho". That was pure vibrato and kind didn't sound like a whistle, even though it was very bird like.

Even though the damage was evident from circa 1997, if her lambs had pleaded with her to take a break from whistling so much between 2005 and 2010, it's possible she would not be on stage today operating like a waxed doll as she manoeuvres her fragile voice to sync with her pre-recorded tracks. Instead, her lambs dragged me through the streets for pointing out that her technique was incorrect, and her whistles were a vocal trick. I love Mariah's music, and most of my favs are ones without any whistles. So any of her lambs who upset about Isola's constructive criticism only appreciate Mariah for the party tricks because Mariah is more than her whistles.
@Saysonow2 ай бұрын
@@TheArtofBeingReacts The focus of the video was to make a distinction between the whistling techniques and to show that it can be damaging to one's voice if not done correctly. BMA has done other videos showcasing Mariah's superb vocalizing, so this was not a hit piece. The fact of the matter is that as enchanting as her whistle notes are, they are not supported. Hence, the reason she developed nodules. Mariah still can sing and can go into the studio and give us new music. But her voice is not strong like the 90s. So she cannot do a 50 minutes live show without the aid of playbacks and partial lip-syncing. Chante Moore uses a similar technique like Mariah, but unlike Mariah, Chante never whistled much in her 20s and 30s. She started doing a lot of whistling over the last 10 or so years, that means she started indulging in her mid 40s.

Also, concerning Mariah's vocal decline I think her making her voice brighter than what it is also may have caused tension along with whistle. Are there dangers to brightening the voice when it is not the true color?

Great video!! I learnt so much. I have a question though... Does that mean that no man could have a voice that naturally is able to sing whistle notes? Because it was mentioned not many women can actually sing in whistle register.

Also surprised you left out Erna Sack for good examples of whistle. Why not also add gospel singers?

Minnie n the thumbnail with no talk on Minnie n this particular video...😔 I would've loved 2 hear her thoughts on Minnie & her use, esp from "Petal Pushers" to "Yesterday & Karma," "Ruby Tuesday Live," & a few others. While I always loved MC, her notes never sounded connected 2 me. Impressive nonetheless.

Say what you want to say ,but Aaliyah, Sade, JLO, Brandy, Janet Jackson, among others still had their voices. Aaliyah what’ve still had her voice as she gotten older.

I'll be the first to state the Ms. Jones is making some great points here. However, I don't particularly care for some of her word choices, specifically singers who's technique with which she doesn't agree. She's a professional, and I think she should consider how she speaks on/of other singers. Society already puts black female singers against each other. We shouldn't perpetuate that. Again, she has made some great points, and I greatly them. appreciate

even with ariana grande, all those whistle notes messed up her voice. she had to learn to sing those notes as a head voice extension instead of a disconnected whistle.

Great stuff but it would have been great to give her examples of good head voice to hear her critique.

I agree with everything she said, but when she said just because you can do something does it and you should do it she’s not wrong. She’s not wrong because like she said Natalie to say she can’t sing the way she used to Mariah Carey. I don’t mean to be rude or wicked, but she’s lucky she has a voice left at all And again I’m not saying any of these things to be hateful.
@ikexbankaiАй бұрын
At some point Mariah Carey will actually die. And at the point it won’t matter how much voice she did or didn’t have left. But what will live on is the art/recordings she made with her voice. The ways she used her imagination to produce songwriting and the vocal performances to deliver the written lyrics. That will be there forever

I appreciate this level of analysis. However, I think about the art that would not have been created or imagined if art was limited to such strict boundaries.
@MarceleJones2 ай бұрын
I think the point is there won’t be any boundaries to step out of because they just simple won’t have a voice to sing with at all 😭 or at least a struggling one. The boundaries are there to KEEP your voice, no one said you can’t be limitless, instead just be CAUTIOUS and use that in MODERATION. You can still be creative. 🩷

What about the young people who follow the same path ruining their voices before it really could shine. When I hear Mariah I don’t get the same feelings that I feel when Whitney or Patti are singing. Something is missing,her voice doesn’t sound free. Even when people point to her best work it’s nice but not free. The teacher on this video did a great job explaining the problem.
@Empyrean.1272 ай бұрын
Would that art never exist or be imagined? Or would that art come later down the line? The voice has natural limits that over time, and with good technique and practice, can be stretched. Those strict boundaries are the body’s response saying, “Hey, that’s enough, please stop.” If the creative process is damaging the artist, there’s a problem.
@ikexbankaiАй бұрын
I agree! I would rather have song Emotions than Mariah not doing it to “save” her voice. When in reality she was never going to be sitting at the top of the charts at 55 years old like she was when she was 25. And the art she gave us lives on FOREVER even when Mariah the actual person dies those performances and what she IMAGINED AND THUS DID WITH HER VOICE WILL LIVE ON! With that being said I also she was a little bit more healthy

With all due respect, Someone needs to tell this lady that Chante Moore is 57 years old and her voice is still intact. Obviously singing whistle tones did not damage it. That being said, i really appreciated her insight.

However, the authors, using a computer model to simulate the highest pitches, found that singers can only produce their highest frequencies with a greatly increased tension in the vocal folds, supported by high expiratory air pressures. The authors write 'the commonly used term 'whistle register' does not reflect the physical principle of a whistle with regard to voice generation in high pitched classical singing'. Professor Herbst added: 'This finally debunks a long-standing myth,' adding, 'it is remarkable that such extreme sounds can be produced with a rather common voice production mechanism - this is only possible with outstanding muscular fine-control of the singers' vocal instrument.' Lead author Matthias Echternach added that it is still not clear why only some sopranos can get to the highest frequency notes. He said: 'It is truly amazing how some female singers can generate the extremely high tensions in their vocal folds that are required to produce these high-pitched sounds without incurring any vocal health issues.

The Echternach study is centered around the "Queen of The Night" aria which Miss Jones references at various points in the interview. The Echternach study also concludes with the statement, "Why some singers succeed while others don’t must remain open for now," Which echoes Miss Jones's statement at 3:40 about the rarity of women who possess the ability to sing these pitches as part of their natural registration. The vocal cord adduction examples used in the Echternach study, are indicative of what Isola calls a "full-throated sound" when referring to classical singers such as Sutherland, Dessay, and Robin mentioned in the video. Depending on context, people will refer to notes above certain pitches as "whistle register." Echternach's study in essence details the difference in how a classical singer (his test subjects ) produces these tones in contrast to a pop singer, which is why the study is titled, "The Queen of The Night Does Not Whistle." The pitches are the same but the mechanics are different as his study has shown and as further supported by Dr. Jones' insights. Thanks for watching.

Bravo again and thanks for sharing this Milik. kzbin.info1XmhNKIgVrs?si=K1oCY3UzEnKmJWmT The link above is Mariah singing Circles in promotion to her Vegas residency (Im sure you seen it so you dont have to watch if youve already seen it). Before i respond to a lamb on another post, I just wanted to triple check that the descend from C6 to E5 is in fact whistle register? They said she blended her voice from whistle at D6 into head voice at E5, but i believe she did as you said Chante does, sung whistle where head voice shouldve been. Is this correct Ms Milik?

Do you know what’s really interesting and I hope the lovely creator of this channel won’t mind me bringing this up is that take the ladies who performed the role of Christine Daye in the phantom of the opera? That is an extremely high color Taurus soprano role now take the title song at the very end, Christine must sing an extremely high E6. I did some reading about all of these ladies, and that note is so difficult the majority of the ladies who play this part will pre-record it and they will lip sync to that particular song because no matter how good they are, they know that trying to sing that note 8 times a week is gonna hurt you it’s gonna hurt you, don’t know solution is a good solution or bad solution. Let me know. I just think it’s interesting but then you have and I’m not trying to hate. I’m not trying to hate, but then you have Mariah Carey Ariana Grande and goodness only knows who else who constantly try to do this whistle register that as I said, in another comment and another one of your lovely videos, I do not care for it because it sounds manufactured and quite frankly irritating, if there’s anything I have said that you issue, please let me know. The only reason I pointed out the Christine stuff is because I thought it was interesting.
