I know this is almost impossible but could you find someone who speak Gallo-Italian from Basilicata? My family spoke that language in the past but we lost it :( Gallo-Italian from Sicily would be nice too.

More interesting would be the native Gallo-Italian from Marche, because in Western Italy the linguistic border is very strongly defined whereas in the east the geography allows for a more progressive transition into italoromance

Many years ago I've read Italian detective taking place in Milan, I think (or some other Northern city?) - i read it in translation, of course, and I don't remember the title, but there were some details I remember clearly: one cop was studying English, and he had to interrogate Italian-American gentleman, but he came back with nothing, saying "I didn't understand a thing", other cops were like: well, your English is probably not so good, and he was "my English is great, but the guy (Italian-American) was speaking on dialect" and so, that's why English speaking cop didn't understand a word. Also there was a place that Italians thought was named "good pears", but it was actually "good stones", because, again, it was on dialect (Milanese. maybe). Does anyone know what book is it?

@@SinarNila Milanese is fully Lombard. Lombard reaches the outskirts of Parma, Emilian is only between Parma and Bologna

It's not a cross between Italian and French but there's something to it: it's a much more conservative member of the Galloromance family, of which French is the most innovative member, and it has some influence due to proximity from Italoromance languages (including Tuscan, the ancestor to Italian)

Yes it also has a lot of Spanish and Catalan influence and the part where my grandfather is from (Voghera) has a lot of Lisbon Portuguese influence caused by the Genoese proximity as well as Piomontese. My grandfather was from Voghera and spoke perfect Spanish and Italian and English with a neutral accent in all of them and if I spoke to him slowly in French; he’d understand most of it. ❤

Beh, io sono madrelingua italiano e madrelingua milanese. Bisogna tenere presente che in Lombardia ci fu la dominazione spagnola, poi quella francese, poi quella austro-ungarica. È chiaro che il dialetto "milanese" sia un incrocio multilingue.

Sì, la verità è che tutti i nostri "dialetti" sono lingue, succede lo stesso col tedesco. A me piacerebbe tantissimo poter parlare le lingue che parlavano i miei avi (napoletano e gallo-italico della Lucania)

Yes It's actually a Gallo-Italic language, sub group of Gallo Romance (or different branch that sits in between Gallo-Romance and Italo-Romance) Either way it's somewhere along the continuum between the two

Anima del Carlo Porta.Poi Grammatica Milanese di Nicoli, altra pietra miliare. No one uses it casually in the city, it is spoken mainly by old people in the villages outside the city. Varieties similar to Milanese are much more alive in other provinces.

Catalan is the youngest child in the family. It's occitans that moved to Spain in the late middle ages, and have started speaking with an increasingly heavy Spanish accent. Though it must be said, Gallo-Iberian is an overarching family that includes Spanish, French, Catalan and Milanese
