This aircraft will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the plane my father and I saw at Heathrow many times from 1988-1991. Great memories!! Now I have a 1/144 Il-86 Zvezda In Aeroflot colours!!!

I had experienced flying on this plane once in July 1984. I flew from Sofia Bulgaria to Hanoi. The aircraft made 4 stops en route to Hanoi: Moscow, Tashken, Karachi, Bombay. Before that, I had flown on AN-24, IL-18, Tu-134 and Tu-154. I remember Tu-154 had cruising ground speed of over 1050km/h. But they all were much noisier than Western made aicrafts Boeing, Airbus...

The Il-86 actually served quite well in Aeroflot service, especially on their busy routes to western Europe. By the 1980's, they were common sights at many European airports flying from Moscow and (then) Leningrad.

Beautiful plane -- shame about the fuel consumption!
@Max_Da_G
@Max_Da_G 5 жыл бұрын
@@GCarty80 That is true. But one needs to remember that fuel consumption is the price paid for all the self-contained things it carries. Those extras it carried added a lot of mass, which is what is the reason it chewed fuel, although I'm not sure that the engines themselves are all that thirsty. Another thing is that it's a medium-range plane which ended up growing in size due to all those features to that of larger long-range planes. If that plane was developed without the need for self-contained ground support equipment and the extra landing gear leg, a lot of space could be occupied by fuel and range would have been longer. Another thing was that if Il-86 flew slower, say 860km/h instead of 960km/h airspeed, it'd have saved yet more fuel.
@GCarty80
@GCarty80 5 жыл бұрын
Spetsnazovets - actually it was the engines that were thirsty, as the Soviet Union had no high-bypass turbofan engines at the time. The first Soviet high-bypass turbofan airliner was the Yakovlev Yak-42, while the Il-96 (the Il-86's successor) also used high-bypass turbofans.

Less orders because it was a soviet plane. Western airlines (the majority) wouldn’t want to order it for a number of reasons. Including mechanical support (all parts were proprietary and made in USSR), political pressure, training, etc. Some were probably sold in places like Iran.
