The dentist skit is the one where Harvey Korman admitted that Tim made him piss himself laughing. But yes, Tim’s entire goal was to crack up his cast mates. Carol and Vickie could resist to a point, but Harvey never had a chance.

The genius of Tim Conway! He did this a lot, started ab-libbing and cracking up the rest of them.

He was always trying to get them to break characters. Vickie Lawrence was the toughest
@kenlieberman4215 Жыл бұрын
They shot the show, once through (like a play) twice, in the morning and after a break, in the afternoon. In between shoots they'd often tweak the writing. Sometimes they'd edit the two versions together, other times they'd use on or the other. The first one shown was the morning shoot. During break the story went around that Tim had come up with an even funnier version of the elephant story and to brace themselves for it. In makeup Vicki was complaining about it to the makeup artist (who would later become her husband). As the youngest cast member, she always felt a little intimidated and always tried extra hard to stay in character. He encouraged her to get Tim back, and she did. That version first aired on Dick Clark funniest bloopers, and that's generally considered the all-time number one. You can sometimes tell when the used the second take, as in the Sorry episode of the Family, Carol's character says "that's a new one, Mama', and Vicki'scharacter says "wait, there's more". You should check that one out.

They had rehearsed this scene before they took it before a live audience. The elephant story was different in the rehearsal. A few minutes before they went on stage a producer came by everyone’s dressing room and said “the elephant story has changed, good luck!”

There's an interview on YT with Vicki Lawrence about this. She was actually annoyed that Tim could get away with this, as Carol had a special affinity for "the family" and didn't want them to break character. You could see at the 4:45 how her attitude changed, and she was morphing into revenge mode. All in good spirit, tho...

There was no "keeping character" with Tim Conway around! Part of the fun of watching is seeing the actors break up like this. I hope you'll react to more Carol Burnett skits, especially "Went With the Wind", a parody of 1939 film "Gone With the Wind". The spoofs on tv ads of the day were also hilarious.
@The_Great_Darino Жыл бұрын
Need to keep it in context, though. While they may have been funny to us he’d have to have seen ‘GWTW’ for the sketch to be funny to him. And the ads spoofs won’t be nearly as funny if he never saw the originals like we did back in the day. Remember, we’re talking early to mid 70’s commercials

The Carol Burnett Show was Live Sketch Comedy broadcast on TV. They did a rehearsal in front of a studio audience early on, which was the first 'take' they showed. And then they do it next actually on the air, broadcasting live into everyone's living room. Tim changed the improv bits and the scene from earlier. And the crew made a regular habit of trying to get everyone else on the stage to lose it or break character as well. When Momma (Vicki Lawrence) cut loose calling him "a little asshole over there" absolutely no one on the stage knew to expect it. The actress got in hot water over it, too, because she said 'asshole' on primetime family TV entertainment live. Carol is a living treasure. She's the GOAT from that time on television. And because the comedy is slapstick, it endures.
@donferoce5652 Жыл бұрын
The Carol Burnett Show was not broadcast live. There were two performances before different live audiences which then had the best bits edited together for broadcast. The cast were brilliant at physical humor beyond the slapstick that relies primarily on surprise for humor but superior performers that moved in such a funny manner that not only do we laugh even though we've seen it before, we often begin laughing in anticipation. The Carol Burnett Show is beloved and enduring not just for that but combining it with dialogue and character-driven humor. The Mrs. Wiggins & Mr. Tudball sketches are classic examples.

This is one of the funniest skits. I grew up watching the Carol Burnett show. Tim Conway was my favorite. He would change & improvise the skits & get everyone to crack up. They did the show live, so whatever direction Tim would take it, they had to just go along with it & hope for the best.
@AlmostReady504 Жыл бұрын
I saw it when it originally aired and everytime I see this clip I forget it's Dick Van Dyke and not Harvey Korman. This one and the "Sorry" board game skit was hysterically funny When they would do "the Family" skit, "As The Stomach Turns", "Mrs. Wiggins " or anything with Tim and Harvey it was always a great evening!!

I thought this was either at the dress rehearsal in front of a live audience or had been cut. There is a special about it on KZbin. Good ole days back in the 70's . When everyone in your household would gather together and watch these shows. Now these current days with everybody watching on KZbin or comedy channels . These are considered classics. To us older folk they were our weekly viewing. Remembering that many families only had one tv, mainly the living room,so all could watch.Elders on sofas, chairs and us kids on the floor. Parents would make snacks for all.😂. Now kids alone in their rooms and snacking playing games by themselves. I miss the loud laughs of uncle's ,aunts and parents.👍✌️

Tim Conway became a legend because of his absolute knack for his ability to adlib and go off script on some unknown tangent and everybody else was trying to stay in character, but most often nobody could hold it together because nobody knew what he would say next!! That line by Vicki Lawrence was the epic comeback that NOBODY saw coming!!!!! LMAO

Here is a bit of trivia on this skit.. One of the funniest parts of that last line, where "Mama", the old lady, played by Vicky Lawrence, and ironically, was the youngest actor of them all... She was actually quiet and reserved when she was off stage, and not really prone to swearing at the time, which is a large part of why the rest of the cast reacted like they did... They were shocked she would actually say that.... Especially on television... Tim was usually the one who went rogue, making them crack up, not so often for anyone to get him, although, as this clip demonstrated.... It DID happen from time to time.
