My Dire Straits story... It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 PM... A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won 2 tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's Brothers in Arms tour show (1986) at the Boston Garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no he looks at me and says would you want to go? I respond in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day... we picked up the tickets at the door... I couldn't believe it they were sixth row Center on the floor I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second Encore song, it was really a very well-done show I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.

Great story, David. I'm so happy for you that you got that experience. Today, what is more important to you, the midterms or the memories? A wise choice, my friend. I love Dire Straits. Song is about a jazz band - "Guitar George", "Harry" are members - they're playing a club or something... but they're not doing it for fame, they're doing it for the love of music. Sultans of Swing aka "Kings of Music" or something like that.
@wendysilva87494 жыл бұрын
Swing music is a form of jazz that developed in the United States in the 1930s and 1940s.
@0okamino4 жыл бұрын
According to Mark Knopfler, the band that inspired the song weren't really all that good, so having the title of Sultans (of anything) was kind of funny. I didn't even know this until pretty recently, and had always assumed it was about a really good band who were very underappreciated due to playing styles that had fallen out of popularity. Either way, I think you're right that those Sultans of Swing just enjoyed playing music, and weren't really out to strike it rich or anything like that.

This song was such a different tune at that time. His finger style wasn't used that much in rock at that point. Chet Atkins put him as one of the best ever and that is an achievement. Jeff Beck had thrown away his pick and was killing it too, using the wammy bar and finger picking. Another truly insanely good guitar player that has mostly retired to study music as healing in Arizona was Stanley Jorden. Playing Stairway to Heaven on two guitars at once. Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits are amazing and spread a different style out to the crowds. Without that music dies ,,.. or gets boring ... Same thing ..

The reason why lead guitarist Mark Knopfler seems very animated is that his method of playing is somewhat different from most rock guitarists. Most use a pick (or in the case of Queen’s Brian May a coin) to strum/ hit the strings, Mark plucks them with his thumb and index finger mainly (middle is also used.). This is believe causes more movement of his right hand than most.

yeah sorry to tell you, the song goes on for another 30 seconds or so and its basically the best part of the guitar solo as most people would agree. And its just simply the zenith in terms of tension where everything comes together as one nice finale. And of COURSE, whatever dumbass made that music video cut it off at the end. I just dont understand what world we are living in. Who cares if it runs another 30 seconds? I would have made the music video cover it fully even if it wasnt the best part of the song. People need to get their priorites straight.

Brothers in Arms is another outstanding Dire Straits submission. As always, very entertaining. Honestly, their entire catalog is good. Mark Knopfler (the lead singer/guitarist) somewhat recently released an album with Emmylou Harris called All the Roadrunning. It is pretty dope.
