I dive into the comment section to confront the uncomfortable assumptions some people have about identity and belonging in America. As someone who often explores the hidden facets of American history and identity, I find it fascinating - and sometimes disheartening - to see how limited some people's understanding of 'Americanness' can be. Join me as I dissect these comments, challenge preconceived notions, and offer a more nuanced look at what it really means to be an American.

Come join me on a new docu-series that explores identity, racial tensions in the South during the 20th century, and the unique experiences of those who historically called Louisiana home.
My name is Danielle Romero, and all my life, I have romanticized Louisiana.
Growing up in New York, it represented a place where I could step back the sepia-toned life of my great grandmother, Lola Perot, who died before I was born.
Now, it was time to go back to Louisiana--although I had no idea what the truth would be or what questions to ask---who was Lola really? Who were we?

Well, why not? No one else is talking about this. Being tri-racial, I have experienced this attempt at "categorization" by others. But my perspective does not address the perspective of all. The basic problem is that society has ignored the fact that mixed race people existed since the beginning of the country. This was the result of the lack of European "White" women here, and the European men married women who were available out of practicality. In many ways, this strengthened the gene pool. It was commonly understood that people confined to the same area for generations become inter-related. This produced inbreeding, which resulted in a weakening of the genes. Inbreeding affects intelligence and increases the rate of mental retardation. This is the particular danger with matters of incest. So ethnic and racial mixing is to the betterment of the human race.

The other Finnish people, the indigenous Sami, actually have some rare genetic links to the Western hunter-gatherers from the time the Lascaux caves were painted in southern France, whereas later hunter gather populations in Europe apparently did not.

Hi. I’m a first Gen Aus from part Italy and part British. Australia had a complete Federal Act called the “The White Australia Policy”. This act was also only officially repealed just over a decade ago meaning it was in power right up to 2010. White was defined as only white people that came from the UK with white skin. It also went on to say central and southern Europeans especially Italian, we’re not to be in Australia, even when they fought for the country in WW2. Eastern Europeans were also not considered white. Only whites were whites from the UK. Interestingly this act was proclaimed by the left wing government of the day (Labour), and was only repealed by the centre right (Liberal) and the left wing party even tried to block the motion.

Danielle, I agree with you 100% and truth of what you’ve uncovered and uncovering. As you have said many time, knowing your own history is instructional to who we all are. Stephen’s opinions really point to the problem we have in “America.” We don’t learn the whole of history and it results in screwed view points of superiority. If you read Henry Hudson or even George Washington, both report who the indigenous people looked like and that’s how we get the first definition of American…”various copper skin people found here…” Whiteness at its core had to expanded to build a majority of a very small group of people who’s nationality has only become American. Self study should be a requirement to adulthood. Then and only then can we have informative and instructional conversations not just opinion based on compulsory education which is extremely limiting.

Your are as always nearly flawless in the delivery of the “lesson.” I thought your educational background centered around journalism, but now it all makes sense. Just the the care that you express in the design of your presentation. There is something noble and pure about how you put together a podcast using your gifts as an educator. Both my parents were teachers and the care that I would see them put into their lesson plans were extraordinary. They seemed to also go the extra mile often up late at night and putting in extra to make sure there students had what they needed. The capacity and willingness to do the same resonates in you. Now you know the social evil that is out there, full of loathing, hatred, ignorance and darkness; there are those who are so shaken about the truth that they will say anything to try to make what is so, what is not. Not to get to philosophical but you are wielding the most powerful weapon known to mankind-truth. That is why there are those who wish to discourage and silence you. I absolutely love what you do. I find this channel informative, educational and fascinating. Since whyteness is a manufactured construct, your examination illuminates its fallacies and weak foundations as whyteness has continued to evolve in the U.S. When one exposes the truth, one is bound to trigger those who would not accept truth for whatever their reasons. I have always wondered how any person’s intelligence, capacity to do good, and net worth as a human being could be judged based on whether a persons skin is richly melanated or melanin deficient. In this day and age, where we carry practically the sum total of mankind’s knowledge and accomplishments in our pockets, if anyone is ignorant about a topic of interest, it is willful or cognitive dissonance. In my personal research, I’ve come across the name of the person who codified skin color prejudice in his writings. Gomes de Zarara. I encourage everyone to look into this. This Portuguese chronicler wrote what he wrote to justify slavery. He was the progenitor of a disease that has impacted mankind for the worst.

The American colony was a penal colony for the British Crown. It was where England sent it convicts and other undesirables. Of course, this is not taught in schools (k-12), so few know or understand it. They know about Plymouth Rock and the romantic notion that Brits came here seeking religion freedom...from that history in school jumps to the Boston Tea Party/ the Revolutionary War. Most Americans in the present-day do not really understand the history of this country, and for some ignorance is bliss. As a case in point, most Americans do not know that Thanksgiving is t based on tall tale that became popularized in the 19th century.

I just discovered your channel. I am of Slovak heritage and 71 years of age. To be blunt, the Czechs, French, English, Norwegian Americans in my younger years lumped the Slovaks in with the Polish, and Slovaks were often referred to as dumb dirt farmers, which I would respond, "At least we know how to grow our own food." Often, the immigrants that come to America have a history of some kind of persecution. In the short time of watching a couple of your videos, I am amazed at how groups, including previously persecuted groups, turn and dump on others. One comment you got from someone mentioned that "God" gave this country to them. I would like to see the notarized copy of that contract. Or that some religions claim to be the "chosen" ones, making for an immediate supremacy position. In 1969 I wrote a song called "I am a man of earth." That is how I chose to view people. We are humans. People of earth. Not Slovak Americans, this or that American. The USA, to me, does not separated us from our collective humanity. I don't have pretense to make my position imposed upon other countries, but in America, we are people of earth with different ancestral histories. Therefore, by definition, the meaning of the word US American automatically encompasses all people of this earth. (Note: People in South and Central America are Americans too.)

There are 54 countries in Africa 3000+ indigenous ethnic groups and many, many cultures. Africa is the 2nd largest continent but the most diverse in indigenous groups. Be specific about where you come from when talking about your culture. We are not a monolith. Africa is a Collective name for many places & African is a generalized and lazy name to call peoples of vastly different nationalities, ethnicities and cultures. Do not perpetuate the ignorance of many. "I am from 'Africa'". One might as well say I am from Earth.

As an Italian i see a parallel of this happening both in the US and in Italy, and I find it a bit logically comical, to be honest. It is comical how both in Italy and in the US we cannot see how all the ethnicities and cultures that have been part, and still are big parts of our countries, are a huge portion of what made a more complete and successful country. It is well documented that the Roman empire (and I'm not a fanatic supporter of that past, surely. I like to see it with an objective eye) managed to reach such power and extension by integrating people from other ethnicities/cultures. Also, much later in history, we finally unified Italy again, although there were, and still are, significant differences between many regions. We are surely doing better than we used to, in spite of the differences. With time you learn to see and find the common ground. And, ethnically, Italy has been such a melting pot of every ethnicity that has populated the lands around and close to the Mediterranean sea. Italians are basically ethnically mixed by definition, and how we fail to see that is absolutely hilarious to me. And a bit sad too, of course. What imaginary ethnical purity are they trying to defend? 😂 I see that this, in some ways is also what made the US so successful. Of course there are way less centuries of admixture of cultures and ethnicities, but still those centuries do have their effects and consequences, and they seem to be mostly constructive. Also, why one should base his own pride on something you don't have any credit for? You didn't ask to be born into a certain ethnicity, as far as we know. So, why having some baseless pride??? Why don't you put in some real, admirable effort into trying to be/create something that actually deserves feeling of pride and belonging? If you believe in ethnical purity as the biggest value and thing to defend, think about this: your people didn't always look like that. Your people too, is a result of admixtures. Sure, it is important to preserve some of it and its culture (example of it, it's important to preserve tribes or certain local villages), but as long as we don't let those just get deleted by time and die, we can mostly only improve by being not so stupidly and blindly segregationist. There is a vivid strength in seeing real value instead of just skin color and ethnicity.

Having lived in Scandinavia and been to multiple European countries, I will say that Europeans do not functionally understand racism outside of London. The populations are so homogenous in northern and central Europe that they can't fathom anything IS racism. I've joked to myself that I was probably the most native American person in Denmark (probably 2 other countries too) because I found myself having to stand up in situations where native Americans were depicted as redskins or that it was nice to use fake chieftains headdresses as lingerie. And I'm still majorly white. But for the most part these people just brushed off the protest and continued doing or saying what they were doing or saying. Because I was the only one saying no. In the Americas, people stumble and change the subject or even say sorry, try to hide their future racist actions. But the current day Europeans as a baseline DO NOT even see it as offensive in the slightest (This is supposed to help orient those comments stating the person is from Europe)

I have seen cartoons and drawings of blackface and sometimes demeaning representations of Black people (a shocking Chuck Jones Looney Tunes cartoon comes to mind that I saw as an adult) by a very large percentage of the old cartoonists. Floyd Norman, a cool old guy who was Disney's first Black animator, has said Walt was not racist, and treated all staff equally, but like many white people of the era was ignorant and sometimes okayed racially insensitive humor in his films. I believe Floyd is still working at about 87 years old. Anyways these things about Dr. Seuss' past have bothered me, but as a kid I got nothing but good from his work, from pale green pants to sleeping on billowy billows. Peace to you and will say a prayer for your Doc video if you make one.

When do we get to the part where the creation of whiteness was to unify on anti-blackness? Or did I miss that lesson

After seeing this well produced video ("I'm not White enough to be an American") I'll humbly ask how many Americans are familiar with The Black Codes? The term "White" represent higher class, and "Black" lower class. Black and White was originally established for identity class status not skin complexions. There was a case in America, which involved an immigrant from Egypt, who fought the courts to change his "White" status to Black. Read this article from Time entitled: "Egyptian Immigrant Wants to be Reclassified as Black." Thanks NYTN for such great content/discussion!!!

I want to thank you for in -site . I find it to be refreshing. I suspect that most if not all of us supposedly white folks would shocked to find that somewhere in our past we have relatives who are not what we would not consider to be white. So what , we are all humans. That is what each and every one of us should remember.

Just came across your channel, very interesting. As to my knowledge I am Austrian, German and Czechoslovakian. God didn't give us any country, we stole it.
