Poor big lad. It's horrible when you're hurting like hell and nobody can find the cause... it's got to be even worse when you can't even verbalise what you're feeling or understand what they're doing to you, especially when it's not giving you the instant relief when it's an obvious abscess/infection. @@Unknown-qp9ur Which is something that a) only the vet could probably use and interpret, especially for subtle changes and b) still wouldn't necessarily show the cause of the pain. I spent six weeks as a kid with a raging wound infection after having a piece of wood penetrate the palm of my hand and end up wedged behind the bone of my finger (and yes that's as gross and painful as it sounds) I can tell you that I had multiple x-rays and ultrasounds, wound explorations and so on - and it was only when they decided to do exploratory surgery that they finally found a chunk of wood that was half an inch long and a quarter inch wide and deep, slowly rotting away inside the flesh of my finger. How I didn't end up with full-on sepsis, I do not know, because I sure remember the weeks of pain, fever and repeatedly having the main wound reopened to drain out the pus. But finding the source? That proved significantly more difficult.

Re: the bull that hasn't gotten better, I'm sure the vet has some kind of portable x-ray machine? Could the problem be a little higher than the hoof? It's so sad that he's still hurting, but i trust your knowledge and care 200%. I'm sure it's going to turn out to be something else. 🐂
@jamesabbot-cole68143 ай бұрын
In cases like this sometimes the best thing to do is give them a course of anti-biotics and let the infection run its course so that it will reveal itself by bursting out or creating a double sole. Also Portable X-Ray machines are really expensive and can be quite sensitive, so taking them onto a farm isn't necessarily a good idea.
@sadlerbw93 ай бұрын
It is entirely possible that it isn't even the hoof that is the problem. There are a lot of bones and joints that could make putting weight on that leg painful. The Hoof is just the most common place for problems, and infections are some of the most common problems to find, so trimming the hoof and a round of antibiotics are great first steps to try without having to spend a bunch of time and money on diagnostic tests. If the easy/common stuff doesn't help, and it doesn't improve on its own, the vet has additional diagnostic options available to keep looking for a cause. It's just more cost effective, when the animal's life isn't in immediate danger, to try the simple stuff first.
