I caught a different channels video of hoof repair, and it was heartbreaking. They had no patience for the cows. The respect you show for the animals is amazing. Not everyone cares enough to be gentle and empathetic. 💙

I would just like to make an observation about Kevin. Since his return from surgery, his face looks at least 10 years younger than when he first started appearing in the videos regularly. As a person who lives with chronic back pain, I never cease to be amazed by how much pain can affect a person’s appearance. The level of pain which he was living with prior to the surgery must have been next level. And he probably didn’t even realize it until after he had the surgery. So God Bless to the surgeon who was able to correct Kevin’s medical condition as well as any other person who facilitated that surgery. So glad you’re on the road to recovery!

The fact that you and Jack are both pretty damn good trimmers means these cows will be maintained to an absurdly high standard. Both your routine visits and his interim maintenance will combine to make it impossible not to. This farm will probably have the lowest rate of lame cows in Scotland in a year.

Having had a whole load of abscesses, including, but certainly not limited to, one on the root of a tooth (unbeknownst to the dentist who was drilling into it to repair a cracked tooth. Despite a ton of local anaesthetic, it put me through the roof! Had to have strong antibiotics before I could go back!); a potentially lethal one on the top of my leg (in hospital for an op less than a week before taking the kids on holiday.); and almost as gruesome as the tooth one - which after me biting down hard "exploded" into my mouth 🤢- was one inside my eyelid. It was there for a few years! Eventually I was casually rubbing my eye when the right half of my eye turned a creamy colour... I get how painful or just how annoying the damned things are. Whenever I see one pop on this channel, I breathe a huge sigh of relief. The cow may still be a bit sore for a while, but that's exponentially better than having to put much of your weight on a "full" abscess. I'm sure they're given antibiotics afterwards to make sure that all the bacteria are gone, but it's that initial pop which makes all the difference!

My cat has an abscess from infection by her anal gland rn, and she did such a good job of carefully but consistently licking it that she actually drained it herself and immediately clearly got HUGE relief from that. I’m having to monitor its healing on vet orders and the sight makes me want to hurl because I’m seeing stuff that should be covered by skin, but coincidentally I came across these videos, which … make me feel queasy but less so, almost like practice? It’s not quite like her abscess, I’m pretty sure I can literally see either lower layers of skin or muscle there, but the mild gore and pus here delicately being cared for feels like it might help me acclimatize a little!

It never clicked for me that the Appleton was still in the shop all this time. Crazy how much damage something as simple as tipping over can do to something that looks as imposing and solid as that machine.

Oddly, I had the opposite intuition! Something that heavy falls hard, but something light can't hurt itself with its own weight. Like how toddlers fall all the time with no damage done, but adults can't do that

I grew up around cattle & horses, took ag courses in high school, worked for a vet who treated livestock as a major portion of his work and frequently helped him out on the ranches or with animals brought in and I've watched lots of these videos now and I find a common factor in that almost all these cattle seem to be kept with wet feet too much of the time, softening the horn, and they seem to have what we called "scours" but in people is called diarrhea. I know those problems are common on U.S.-style factory farms but I'm surprised to see that in a place I wouldn't expect overcrowding and other things I expect here in the U.S. but I believed most other developed nations had avoided or moved away from. Do you agree that too high a percentage of the cattle you're seeing have too much moisture around their hooves and have issues causing digestive problems way more than they should, or is it just because we're seeing the 1/1000 all the time and never seeing the 999 with perfect hooves? And do hoof and digestive problems have a correlative relationship, so the ones with bad hooves also happen to have the runs more than the cattle with solid hooves?

You will certainly be more of an expert in this area than I am, judging by what you write. I completely agree with you in everything. My aunt only had 1 cow, but she also put new dry straw bedding under it at least twice a day.

Yeah, if the hooves stay wet the keratin will degrade and become easy prey for microorganisms, not to mention just softe and "cheesy" or waxy. A dry surface is essential for all hoofed animals commonly raised in the U.S. which is where my experience is based. @@josefsezbrisko9064

Another interesting video! I have a question, and I hope it’s not TOO dumb😺 When you got surprised at the pus draining, after a while, the pus was getting more bloody, but is also was sort of grainy, I thought. So, can cows feet get infected/or develop gout? From what I’ve seen, gout is creamy but also has painful, crystalline particles. So, a question from Northwestern Arkansas (pronounced Are-can-saw) in the beautiful area. This area is a part of the Ozark National Forest & abuts the Boston Mountains. It’s really a great place to live. 🙏😎
@BabalonNuit
@BabalonNuit Жыл бұрын
Gout is generally caused by excessive purines in the diet which produces a lot of uric acid, and the kidneys can't get rid of it, so it builds up in the blood and is deposited as crystals in the joints. Gout sufferers are advised to cut meat out of their diet, since meat contains a lot of purines. Since cows don't eat meat, I would assume they don't get gout.

I've been a consistent viewer for over a year now, and I think this is the first time I've seen you actually graze a cow. No shame in that at all, it's bound to happen every once in a while, but now that I've seen what a graze looks like, it is all the more obvious how different it looks than all the times that a cow's hoof is producing the red stuff on it's own. A new learning expirence for us!

I love this work, he's so dedicated. I have a question for him. Since i work in Surgery sometimes in vascular Surgery. We see a lot of diabetic feet and damaged tissue. Since animals are different to treat but sometimes we can use the same meds for human and animals. We use to rinse the open holes or cavities with Peroxide and Braunol. It forms a foam and disinfects well. It might be a novice question, but do you have to open/expose/take off the hoof until you see the good tissue? Keep doing what you love😜
