Really pleased you've seen it now, John, I was hoping you would. Good to see it on 70mm but hope you can see it on IMAX 70mm (i'm sure BFI IMAX will keep bringing it out as with Oppenheimer and Interstellar). I saw it at Waterloo and the addition of the film grain (not noticable in the Digital IMAX screening) adds an interesting effect to the desert in that it mimics sand grains! The constant movement of these adds a spark of reality as film grain does, but also makes it more like being there as you can imagine thats the sand particles in the air! Not disruptive, more it gives you a feel of what you're seeing is real!

@@moviecollector5920 it's good that we have the BFI acting as a library of cinema screenings. Certainly the sold out screenings of this and other IMAX 70mm showings means there is a following that will turn out. The BFI's own Film On Film project has also been good with this, with their commitment to restrike prints of a certain amount of classic films every year. The Prince Charles is also a haven of this, as are the assorted cinemas around the country that as often as possible run Film prints.

good video you say big formats helping bring people back to cinema box office numbers paint a different story
@davidjames579
@davidjames579 7 ай бұрын
Overall that's right due to the ridiculously short window between cinema and streaming release. However in large screen premium formats there has been an increase in audiences. The IMAX Corporation last year celebrated its highest grossing year of all time. Oppenheimer made 20% of its nearly billion dollar box office from IMAX screenings, which is unprecedented. More IMAX cameras and cinemas are to be built, and this seems to be cinema's USP going forward. Films need to be events to draw people to cinemas. Oppenheimer, Barbie and Dune Part Two have shown this to be the case.

Thank you David. You summed the situation up better than I ever could have done. I can't see how smaller, poorly attended local cinemas can hope to regenerate their audiences by reintroducing film but myself and a few others do have something up our sleeves. We're hoping to detail the basics of it at Film Is Fabulous at the Hereford Courtyard on 1st June. A low cost option to offer something different to a telephone or flat screen telly is what is required. Something that can work with all forms of projection. John.

@@moviecollector5920 thanks John. I don't blame general audiences for staying home as they save money and time and with a decent system the quality difference is not noticable to an average viewer. And the film industry harmed themselves by reducing time from cinema release to streaming to just 6 weeks! I honestly think as a whole they need to go back to a longer time between. Your proposal sounds very interesting. I look forward to hearing more at the time or just after. 35mm can also be used as a draw for audiences, for its unique atmospheric qualities. Perhaps a good way to beat the malaise at so-so digital presentations. I also think printing Digitally shot films to a film print is a good measure. And there have been very effective examples. Even the Digitally shot Marvel film Doctor Strange 2 got a 35mm print made of it!

@@chrisburns7979 There's IMAX and there's IMAX Chris. When it comes to the video projection versions it's possible some Odeons might give superior imagery if they have Dolby Vision capability. But the enormous screens of even the faux IMAX houses takes some beating. Masking and curtains would be nice but the engineering and cost of the really huge screens such as the BFI IMAX make it prohibitive. Keeping something so massive reliable would be a concern too. I didn't ever find the Dune books particularly enthralling either Stephen but I always suspected that was because I loved the Asimov Foundation series of books and Frank Herbert's series didn't match up to those in my opinion. How on earth Foundation could ever be successfully carried over to films remains to be seen but I'm not sure Dune has so far. However, the attempt with the first of these two new films was a valiant attempt and I think it's worth me supporting the second film given the effort and expense that's been put into producing standard 70mm and 15/70 IMAX prints. I also hope that other film makers are being given the budget to start shooting with film again now that it's been proven that it's how people want to see a movie. Don't tell me Melbourne are giving up on 15/70 just as it's making a worldwide comeback. Melbourne is the last IMAX house in Australia so that would be terrible news. We're finally going to see the film on Monday. Being as it's full of 1.43:1 it makes for an even more special cinematic adventure and given that the home video release won't have any of that makes it even better still. It won't matter much with the 4K disc though as the whole thing was shot with the intention of missing nothing vital outside of the 2.40:1 frame size. Love it when you go behind the scenes into the nitty-gritty of cinema. If you had your choice, where do you prefer to sit in the cinema: front row, up close, mid-way, at the back? Of course it depends on the size of the screen, the cinema, and likely the quality of your peripheral vision, but do you like to be enveloped, comfy, or a birds eye view? Have there been any studies on this?

I thought I'd already answered you Mubai but in case it went missing... I've tended to either be right at the front or right at the back. At The Empire we always preferred row R which was directly as you entered the auditorium so had a walkway behind it down to the front section of seats or back to the steeply raked section behind. The important thing with row R was that there was no one directly behind to kick the back of your seat. John.

@@xix94 I used to almost live in the major cinemas in Leicester Square. That was during the mid 1990's. Towards the end of the 90's the image quality across cinema in general started to decline and with few exceptions today it has never recovered. The big driver initially seems to have been the advent of computer special effects animation. This almost forced film makers to use Super 35 rather than full frame anamorphic 35mm and the inevitable decline in quality that resulted. Then it turned out that some films, such as The Matrix, were subjected to unfinished computer effects and it was so obvious to me whereas hardly anyone else seemed to notice. I started going to the cinema less and less and then in 2006 I almost gave up altogether. The last film I saw at The Empire was Prometheus and it looked awful compared to the superlative quality we consistently had in this once great cinema previously. I'm careful about cinema visits today and tend to restrict them to when I know a film print is being screened. But seeing how good Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes looks in the BFI IMAX rather entices me to give video projection in cinemas another try. John.

Nice video, I always enjoy seeing what you buy and your tours around the projection booths! I recently managed to get a seat for the 15/70 Dune 2 at the BFI and it was an interesting presentation. As you suspect, definitely not native IMAX film quality, but the scale and impact were impressive. I think I spotted three different aspect ratios in use. Trouble is, I was flanked by two huge popcorn buckets who managed to scrape their buckets noisily throughout the entire running time, which really ruined it for me. Actually quite impressive how audible they were given the volume of the movie. I know cinemas need food sales to stay in business, but noisy eaters just spoil the experience for me and put me off going again for a while. I wonder how much more they'd have to charge for a no-food screening? Anyway, as for the presentation again, I think I preferred the Cineworld IMAX in Leicester Square for this movie. Hoping to catch a few films for the 25th anniversary of the BFI IMAX, but again already anxious about the popcorn. Yours, grumpily!

I know exactly what you mean Gordon. But despite a few noisy eaters around us yesterday we managed to finally see the film at the BFI IMAX. I don't know if the 70mm blow-up treatment works as well from 4K video as it does from 35mm but I do appreciate that it's been done. At least it looked like e genuine film and that's all any of us could wish for really. However, the trailer of Furiosa looked impressive from that massive laser lamp digital video projector so I suspect I'd prefer some movies done one way and others through the blow-up treatment. With each of the 12 prints of DUNE PART TWO apparently costing around £45K to produce such an effort has to be supported. Sadly, I can't go into The Empire any longer. I think I'd be too upset as I loved it in there and can't bear the thought of seeing that beautiful auditorium chopped up. Nothing lasts forever sadly. John.

@@moviecollector5920 I'm glad you got to see it, and agree, it did have more of a film look to it - as you'd hope! I agree about the old Empire, I have so many happy memories of it when I used to visit a lot in the 90's. I even remember my favourite seat in the middle of row CC so you would see over the heads of anyone walking past! To a lesser extent, I also miss the old Warner screen almost nextdoor before it was also chopped up. I adored their THX trailers and saw so many classics on both screens. I was really upset when they sub-divided the Empire, but I have to say while it misses the huge auditorium aspect, it is still one of my favourite screens for digital IMAX formats. The seats at the BFI are too small for long films! I'm also fond of the new Odeon West End Dolby screen, with its deep underground location being a secret weapon against phones! That's my favourite for 2.35:1. Sadly the main Odeon LS has out-priced me. I used to love that front row at the top!

@@cameralabs It's become increasingly obvious to me that cinema is in terminal decline Gordon. OPPENHEIMER does seem to have pointed a way forward but I do think something more is required and it has to be minimal cost but something that can't be easily replicated at home and certainly not on a telephone. The answer can be found in the past just like it can with almost everything. There's nothing new under the sun. I was upset when the Leicester Square Theatre was chopped up and become the Odeon West End so I don't think I'll ever expect it being a miniature bunker. The two THX auditoriums in the Warner West End were wonderful. The Odeon still is wonderful but it's lost its cinema seating in an effort to remain viable. The screen in there doesn't seem to be quite as wide any longer though. We also used to sit at the back of the first section of balcony seating which was the best place to see a film in there. Now you have to sit near the front but unfortunately in a bloody armchair! However, it seems like the unlimited Odeon monthly pass for £17.50 does include this great cinema so it could be worth you looking into that as you've stayed in London. We abandoned our home town when the congestion taxing started as I value freedom and didn't like the look of how the road taxing would inevitably end up. John.

@@moviecollector5920 I hear you! If you've not visited the Dolby Screen at Odeon West End though, I really would recommend just one movie to see what a really dedicated new cinema can do as the picture, sound and seating work really well together, rather than a chopped-up or repurposed space. But I know it can be hard if you have fond memories of an older venue. I still don't forgive OLS for putting in those recliners upstairs! I really enjoyed the Caine film. As to Night Of The Hunted. I've been a Jean Rollin fan ever since I saw Fascination and have had all his films on VHS, many on VCD, DVD, Blu ray and I'm really pleased to see that he is being released on 4k, uncut and restored with original french dialogue and improved subtitles. They are an acquired taste but I love the poetic, dreamlike nature of his films. I can recommend Fascination, The Iron Rose and Two Orphan Vampires. There is a lot of nudity in them but it is all done in the best possible French taste (mostly). Don't expect a traditional narrative and just let them wash over you. I love his films.

Morning Chris. I've just read the 80 page book that comes with The Night of the Hunted 4K and I found it all so interesting. It was probably obvious to most but I now understand why gratuitous sex scenes have historically been chucked into so many movies in the past. We had a look at the image quality the other evening and it looks beautiful. John.

Yes, where have I been Siddique? It amazes me that I've missed so many great films down the years. In my defence I have been in stressful work roles and for the past - almost 20 - years I've been self-employed and working stupid hours seven days a week. It's nice not to be doing those 80+ hours a week now but that's only because the pandemic killed every aspect of our business. But it's wonderful to be seeing some great films from the past for the first time in the wonderful quality now being provided by 4K home video discs. Who ever would have thunk it? If I like One From The Heart I probably will do a review video. I don't suppose it will be a popular video but if it's interesting to make it then who cares? John.

I hadn't heard about a new Superman film being shot in genuine IMAX. That would be a good news story for the cinema industry as a whole as it would confirm that people have woken up to the reasons for OPPENHEIMER's success and are trying to continue the success with other productions. There is the chance of another movie shot on digital video being blown up to 15/70 later this year but I can't recall any more than that right now so can't suggest the possible title. John.

I've only ever seen it once and that was actually at the BFI's National Film Theatre many years ago. As for shopping on-line, I too get bored with it but during the worst of the Covid fiasco I did have to stick with looking at the pages of the HMV shop as there wasn't very often any alternative. I don't use Amazon for anything and eBay can be frustrating when the same titles appear in the search results over and over again. There's nothing better - or more dangerous! - than actually browsing shelves in a shop. John.

I bought the Aliens 4k recently. I've not watched it properly but I did put it in to see how it looked. The quality does look very good and you can still see the grain structure. It doesn't look overly smooth like the Terminator 2 4K, at least from what I saw. I was worried after hearing something about an AI upscale. The only thing I noticed that didn't quite look right was the Fox logo at the very beginning. It looked flat and the outline stood out a bit too much. But then seeing a few early scenes of the film, everything looked fine.

Don't take any notice of any of us doing reviews (and possibly getting it wrong) because the only thing that matters is what you think. I don't think Aliens was ever the best looking film but when you see what has been done with American Graffiti from particularly low origins, then it should be possible to make higher quality films such as Aliens look very good indeed. True Lies has issues but overall I thought it was the best of all the home video options we looked at. Trevor from Double Bill Movies felt that he preferred the Blu-ray which I can understand. I'll probably get the Aliens disc when it's a little cheaper but I doubt I'll ever watch the whole thing as nothing is going to supplant my Super 8 film print. John.

Greetings from a very cold Santiago de Chile. I recently receive my 4K version of "One From the Heart" and here in America is only a disc set. I expect to watch it soon. I love "The Outsiders" and I have it in Blu-Ray and 4K, but none of them compare to your incredible copy loaded with extras. I know that there are some rights issue that explain the lack of material between the US and UK editions, but that is the downside of being a collector in Latin America. Same thing with the movies. Although some art houses are projecting old movies in 35mm, our Imax theaters are only digital and they don't have the style and experience quality that you can find in Britain. Although we have digital projection in few theaters, they focused mainly in recent films many of the dubbed in spanish because according to some polls the chilean audience hate subtitles. And these is one of the reasons why I prefered to invest in 4K or BR which are the best alternative to enjoy a movie you love the way you want. Adiós, amigo.

We watched that French film 'The Night Of The Hunted' last night Gaspargh and apart from one or two too many sex scenes I think we both very much enjoyed it. It has English subtitles and I wouldn't have wanted to see it any other way. But then, we're all film enthusiasts on here and want to see the original versions of movies irrespective of where they've been made and the spoken language. Occasionally I find I have to import a 4K disc simply because it is not released over here but I can't do it very often owing to the cost. I dare say that would be even worse in Chile. And now that I mention Chile, we watched out PAL LaserDisc of 'Alive' (1992 I think) a couple of weeks ago. We hadn't spun it in years and what a great film that one is. Surely that's a fabulous film that should be selected for a new 4K release. John.

Afternoon David. We watched The Great Escaper on Wednesday evening and both loved it. It's quite difficult not to shed a tear or two. What a wonderful film. We then had a peak at two of the 4K discs we brought home, One From The Heart and Night of the Hunted and both look good but we didn't look at very much. With regards to Aliens, I have two copies of it on Super 8 film and I can't imagine watching it any other way unless someone donates a 35mm print sometime. It's the same for me with Alien because although I did review that disc as an excuse to doing a rather extensive KZbin video all about the film I didn't watch it all as I didn't feel that I needed to. Maybe Aliens is one I'll have a look at when it's not £25 which seems like a lot to pay for something I'll never watch all the way through. I've been getting variable reports about it but my opinion is that irrespective of any modern technology that's applied to a film, if the end result looks good then who cares? I'd like it if the Super 8 prints were better but it wasn't possible given the technology available in 1989 when the Super 8 rights were negotiated, 16mm reduction negative supplied and first prints struck. It's wonderful to be able to see it on film though. John.

IMAX Corporation design them but I expect they get someone like Philips Kinoton to manufacture. 15/70 certainly is the cutting edge of cinema and has been since just before 1970 so it's been quite a long period to be at the top. However good video projection may become in the future it's just not as exciting. How on earth those IMAX film projectors don't explode or implode when they're chucking that enormous gauge through at 24 frames per second is one of the world's great mysteries. Good evening Fred. I think there are three FOPP shops left in Britain now. They are subsidiaries of HMV but smaller shops packed with physical media and little else besides other than perhaps some books but not many. The solution to your DVD problem is to get a standard Blu-ray player which probably start at less than fifty smackers these days. Any Blu-ray player will work with older equipment even if it means an investment in a little gizmo box to adapt an HDMI to the previous audio and video outputs. It's all pretty cheap now. Michael might be the most experienced projectionist still working full time in the UK today. He may well be one of the most experienced in the world. And to think you captured him more than 20 years ago plying his trade in his previous cinema. The history of cinema you captured during what has turned out to be the end of the heyday of cinema as we once knew it is so valuable today. My wife and I enjoy each one of your KZbin videos together and the recent longer video of the Hastings Odeon was simply wonderful. John.

Always subscribed and liked, John. Dune was printed to film to soften the sand and likely to help blend the cgi which was I’m assuming rendered in 2k. Genius decision. But in my opinion the final grade must be done digitally and projected digitally. Film projection is fun, but nothing compared to a good laser projector. Also, I can’t stand all of that imax headroom. If it isn’t framed for imax, why bother?

We finally saw the 15/70 print yesterday Cody and there is quite a lot of 1.43:1 framing in it so it appears that it was filmed that way as there was no perceptible degradation in image quality during those sequences. In fact, a couple of times I'd say the image quality was better when it went to 1.43:1. I haven't seen the video projection to compare it against but it had the distinctive look of film about it which I did not get from the 4K disc of the first part a couple of years ago. The sound was pretty good too... to say the least! John.

We only watched the Blu-rays of THE PACIFIC a few months back and this was because I found it in a local charity shop for £3. We've had the DVD version for years. The sound on many older tracks is better than the over the top multi-channel of today but even matrixed Dolby Stereo is often better than 5.1. I think it's down to the watering down of the overall sound due to more and more channels being added whereas we used to get full range sound around us from all four matrixed channels. THE PACIFIC has to be one of the best series of all time. BAND OF BROTHERS probably isn't far behind it either. John.

If it were one of my favourite films I'd be disappointed but as much as I like it I don't find it that repeatable. Put some work into re-configuring video projector or telly and True Lies actually looks rather good. We think the slightly waxy facial shots are like that because the focus was slightly soft and so the technology used couldn't fully correct it.
