You know what this is missing? Interesting and relatable characters. The original 1979 Alien was so appealing not only because of the monster concept, but the whole notion of regular folks, “truckers in space”, a little rough around the edges, being confronted with that creature. The characters here in this look too young and pretty. Flawless. Nothing to hold onto. No aged, weary faces. It’s also what made the original “The Thing” so good. Real, aged, character actors, not models.
@Johnnysnuff4 ай бұрын
Unless you have already seen this film then your comment is dumb!! How can you put across all the traits of the characters in an ensemble cast is a short trailer????
@MistaGify4 ай бұрын
This is a HELL of a nitpick. Characters looking too young and pretty automatically means they're not going to be interesting or relatable? That they won't suffer grievous bodily harm or extreme psychological torment as the film progresses? I bet if this cast emulated the original film's weary middle-aged folks, you would dismiss it as a ripoff...
@DD-it1th4 ай бұрын
The fact that the entire ensemble cast is less than 30, all of them born in the 90’s kinda gives you an idea of who this will appeal to. Alien has now become a franchise and trying to appeal to a new generation however there in lies the big problem. The new generation have seen and want better (in terms of suspense, CGI, gore, etc). Monsters in space or horror of any sort has moved on from the original Alien. The original and sequel were brilliant because it was new, fresh and relied on suspense rather than out and out gore, and the characters as stated before were older, war weary, had probably seen and experienced the kind of horrible things in their lifetime that would give these youngsters nightmares and serious mental health issues. Then you have the fact that these youngsters look like they spend more time in the mirror and engaging in new diets than fighting to protect the planet. And you can be sure there will be at least one character (because Hollywood does this now) that appeals to the LGBTQ+ community. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying they are bad actors, I just think that Alien isn’t needed anymore and it was, it should incorporate much of what made the first two believable/relatable. Throw in Sigourney Weaver (there’s always ways of bringing her back), Keifer Sutherland, Joel Kinnaman, James Badge Dale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Halle Berry, Drew Barrymore, Alice Braga, examples of actors who are still well known and can appeal to both young and old.

They have tried new ideas. Most turned out to be duds. Failing to create new fans. Going after older popular IPs with built-in fanbases is the way to go to make a quick buck is the way to go it seems now a days. Add to the fact that the Alien franchise has always had female leads, makes it an easy choice to try and bring back. They expect little chance of backlash from gender swapping the lead. I'm sure they are expecting this movie to do very well.

“I wonder if Hollywood will ever come up with any new ideas…” Well, in the past 5 years alone, we’ve had “Everything, Everywhere All at Once”, “Don’t Look Up”, “The Sound of Metal”, “Killers of the Flower Moon”, “Barbie”, “Oppenheimer”… I mean, outside of the “Dark Knight” trilogy, everything Christopher Nolan has made has been purely original. There are PLENTY of new ideas out there in Hollywood. Just because they don’t show up on your radar, or they’re not splashed over IMAX screens doesn’t mean that there aren’t new ideas out there. New ideas is somewhat difficult to entertain when universe building requires time and talent and in today's day and age you need to make money fast. So let's shorten the "creative" part take an IP and crowbar it into a story setting that is main theme (in this case teenager slasher story time but the slasher is an Alien with it's brood)
@Th12354 ай бұрын
Looks really great. But I think the characters are way too young. Instead of "truckers in space" Alien: Romulus inevitably looks like "teen slasher in space". I can't say exactly why, but I think you would need some additional main characters around and beyond 30 to get real Alien/Aliens vibes. I think the average age of the Nostromo's crew was actually one important factor, that has set that movie(Alien) apart from your run of the mill slasher movie and gave it the credibility and authenticity that still holds up 45 years after its premiere. Same goes for the WY-board, the staff of the space station, Ripley, the settlers from LV-426 and Sgt. Apone, etc., from Aliens.

The story is paramount (looking at you DIsney for that dumpster fire called The Acolyte!!! 🤦🏾♂🤦🏾♂🤦🏾♂) Quite frankly, I think THIS is EXACTLY what the Alien franchise needed. We've had 30-somethings at the helm to diminishing returns. I say: keep the basic framework of the Alien universe but TOTALLY revamp how things come together. I love how the trailer spoils all the major action sequences and deaths in the movie. The Asian girl gets chest bursted, black guy gets possessed, wo-uh guy and another rando guy get impregnated by a face hugger, the brown-haired white girl is the new Ripley, an asteroid hits the station, the station blows apart on re-entry (I'm guessing pushed there on purpose by the new Ripley), and there's probably just enough of the story left to allow for a sequel.

They dont want Alien to be anything else but the classic original experience, so they will keep remaking the same old things for eternity, with whatever is the hottest trend of the decade. Neil would have uprooted the franchise into a new direction that only brave non-studio execs can handle, and that was too big of a control loss for them. Can you imagine a movie where we see Wayland-Yutani actually succeeding in functionally taming the creatures for military purposes? Holy balls that would be awesome.

@@NGC6144 Ruined the mystique of the space jockey? Maybe. But they expanded on the AI aspect. David, man made sentient cyborg being partly responsible for creating the alien Ripley fights in the first movie? The idea that humans look for their creator(r) built a humanoid who knows his creator and knows is better than his creators in most aspects. That’s an interesting psychological conundrum. That puts a weird idea in his head that if his creators made a better being then he can make an even better one. Whoever wrote that out deserves a high five. Much better than just a bunch of jump scares in a mystique scenery imo

@@googleyoflolz9930 Alien 3 is not generally well regarded among many. Even David Fincher disowned it completely. Resurrection was somehow worse, the AVP movies were a thing that happened, and Prometheus and Covenant were utterly nonsensical.
@googleyoflolz99303 ай бұрын
@death-king1834 yeah the main turn-off for me about Alien3 is that they killed Newt and Ripley even though it doesn't make sense how an egg got onto the shuttle. The games are pretty cool. Alien : Isolation being the best of them, Colonial Marines being fun despite it's frustrating boss fights. (I'm looking at you mission 5) Haven't the others yet, they're still in my library waiting for me to finish Colonial Marines and Kingdome Come : Deliverance (which has nothing to do with the Alien franchise) There's a lot of good stuff in the Alien franchise, but Romulus aint it.
