wrestling in armor and slapping each other with big pieces of metal is still cooler than most sports even if its not really medieval fighting
@lordiex2328 жыл бұрын
how did medieval fighting looked then? thats how it looked, trying to get opponent to the ground by any way and then finish him.
@Jaime_Protein_Cannister8 жыл бұрын
The armor is so solid that the only way to hurt someone with a sword was to thrust into weak spots and that was also rarely was lethal,it was more lethal due to infections that the damage at the spot. You'd have to knock a heavy plate knight down and then stab them with a sharp dagger into their eye sockets ,throat or arm pits. If this was a chainmail/leather fight it would consist much more of dodging and parrying.
@7dayspking8 жыл бұрын
***** Leather is not armour, mail armour stops sword blows just fine. More importantly both would consist of parrying and basic maneuvering, the objective of the fighting above is to be the last standing, not actual fighting. More importantly fighting technique changes completely in 2v2, 5v5 or 21v21.
@benjaminplatt41094 жыл бұрын
@@7dayspking Leather most certainly is armor. It can protect very nicely against slashing and minorly against thrusting. It would be much harder to defeat naked then with a leather cuirass and wool gabison underneath.
@7dayspking4 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminplatt4109 My old comments are nonsense. It's not that there's no truth in them but they're worded in a way that obscures any information they might contain. That said I've seen very little evidence of leather armour worn as a primary defence in the 15th century in Western Europe or parts of Eastern Europe like Poland. I'm not talking about one off examples here either, I mean as a widely adopted and legitimate 'option'. If it was as uncommon as I think it is I believe that's a strong testament to how ineffective it is as armour. On the other hand mail armour was very popular in the 15th and into the 16th century across Europe even as a primary form of armour. In art I see a lot more soldiers going 'naked' by that I mean fighting in their clothing than wearing leather actually formed into armour, as in not as just simply a fashion accessory. I don't think the people of this time considered actual leather as a legitimate form of armour, let alone a 'leather cuirass'. Among the scarce number of potential 'leather armours' I have found, they mostly seem to be for the wrists or lower legs and it's still debatable whether they are entirely leather or are simply a lining for steel armour. There are buff coats or jackets but I don't see these being worn as an actual primary defence. I wouldn't call an arming coat 'armour' if it's only intended purpose is to be worn under actual armour.

Sometimes the use of a weapon can keep a person from grappling with you. Sometime the use of a weapon can set up a takedown. Weapons are part of the game. So is wrestling. Watch some more matches. Different teams have different strategies and use different tactics.

@Etelred Etelred Do you know what a sport it? It is a game in which the intention is not to kill anybody. This sport is about fighting in the armor and with the weapons of the middle ages in the style of certain tournaments of the time. Certain tournaments had melees on foot in which the object was to put the person to the ground, and allowed grappling to do so, and only allowed blunted weapons. This activity is done in that style. If you want to watch people with weapons kill each other, go elsewhere. If you want to watch people use things other than blunted versions of medieval weapons, go elsewhere. If you want to see full-contact fighting in armor with weapons that does not involve wrestling, go elsewhere. If you want to learn more about this sport, watch more videos. However without these, it just becomes armoured wrestling with aerodynamic sticks.

Although i like this, it looks more like armored wrestling or rugby / American football. The problem lies is that what it counts is if a fighter takes another fighter down. Even if they can't drop their weapons, they don't use em really as weapons, they use it a lot to lock the opponent and bring him on the ground more than for striking. This leads fighters to just look tackling and try to make the opponents trip than actually fight. IMHO they should look a way to change the rules to avoid this and make the "sport" more interesting.
@NewYorkKnightsCombat18 жыл бұрын
The rules were set up to allow minimum restrictions on technique and maximum force to be used with very simple victory conditions. There is no stabbing or thrusting, but pretty much everything else (weapon and shield strikes, punches, kicking, grappling, etc) is legal. You cna even hiot them from behind if you want to (and are able to get into position). No one is counting points, there is no need to "acknowledge" blows. The only thing that "counts" is that when you hit the ground, you are out, and when everyone on your team is out, the other team wins. What type of fight would you rather see? What sort of rule changes do you think would make that happen?
@gcgrabodan8 жыл бұрын
yeah but he has a point. All really dangerous techniques (like thrusting) and weapons (like warhammers) are probably not allowed (which makes sense). What is left is you are best advised to use techniques from wrestling and judo to do the one thing that counts: bring them down to the ground. Nonetheless, great stuff.
@NewYorkKnightsCombat18 жыл бұрын
gcgrabodan This particular melee does come down to a lot of wrestling, but to judge this sport on this one video is like to judge MMA on one UFC match. There are plenty of factors involved in winning and plenty of ways to win and plenty of ways to use weapons effectively in this sport. You cannot win poften without a good wrestling game, and yes, you should study judo, jiu jitsu, sambo, wrestling, etc, particularly those techniques that involve taking someone down without going down yourself. But you also need good kickboxing skills, as well as knowing how to strike with the weapon you are holding. Teamwork is also important. If you can get a grip on someone that sets them up for a good, hard polearm strike to the head or back or let,then down goes one guy with two of you left standing. If you can distract someone while a teammate runs behind them and knocks them over, same result. If one of your guys can draw three of theirs into attacking him, then that leaves (in the case of a 5 v. 5 match like this) a 4-2 advantage for the rest of your team. Choice of weapons is important, too. If your scouting reports that the other team likes to stand with their back against the fence and let you try to wrestle them down, then bring out a bunch of long polearms and a few good punishers with falchions and punching shields and solid stand-up grapplers. While your close-in guys screen the polearmers, the polarmers can bring down the pain with the polearms until the other team decides it is a bad idea to keep standing.
@gcgrabodan8 жыл бұрын
New York Knights Combat Thanks for the explanation. So, the weapons do significant damage? because the short swords look like the dont do anything. But you can knock someone unconcious with some of the weapons i guess? or are people just bashing each other as distrcation?
@NewYorkKnightsCombat18 жыл бұрын
If someone gets knocked unconscious they should consider improving their helm and padding, but it has happened. Like auto racing, the quality and safety of your game depends greatly on the quality and maintenance of your equipment. If you have good armor, blows from weapons will affect you less than if your armor is not as good as the other guy. Because the armor works (lie it did in the middle ages), it is difficult to actually hirt someone. But repeated blows can convince someone that they are going to get hurt, and make them less likely to continue standing. Blows can knock people over (win!) and weapon strikes to legs can trip people or knock their balance out. And as I said before, I have seen a good, hard blow to the back, hip, or leg send someone down like a puppet with its strings cut. It's all about what is the most effective move you can execute at the moment with minimal risk. Grappling is an easy, low risk go-to, so it happens a lot, but a skilled and experienced fighter can find moments where a weapon strike is the thing to do. Watch more of the matches on this channel, mine, and others to see the varieties of scenarios, strategies, tactics, and outcomes.

i like it but the swords don't seem to be doing much, almost seems like youd be better off dropping your sword so youd have two hands to wrestle with?

literally just spent an hour watching this and the teams which use two handed weapons seem invariably to win. The sword shield combo seems weak like you say, you just want to blunt force someones head enough that they kindly sit down

There are a variety of weapons used in this game. Most of the "swrods," as you call them, are a type known as a "falchion," used to chop through heavier armor. The trouble with dropping your weapon, is that then the other person has a weapon and you don;t, and then they can hit you in the head or hands or anywhere before you can reach them. Weapkon strikes take a toll on a ersonin armor, even if they don't "injure" them. Also, the rule is that you must have a weapon i at least one hand. If you lose it, you have to run back to your sideline and get one.

One thing that I don't like about this is how fighters usually wear coat or tabard on top of their armor. Like, come on, I get it they're loyal to their team but white (uncovered) armor or dyed brigandine would looks far cooler.
