Thank you! Using this info for my PLEX home server. It's HDD to keep the system cheap but this should keep the spindle reader less taxed while people are streaming movies. Saved this video for updating my video editing rig as well. Thanks again.

You want to look up what the: "Copy only files with Archive attribute" (In ImDisk [Data] tab) does. Only the files that have changed are then written/saved on shutdown. Thats both faster and saves on writes/TBW. For speed: An exFAT File system, with a 4KB Cluster Size is best. (In ImDisk [Basic] and [Advanced] tabs) (Cluster Size then matches the Data Block Size used in DRAM) Ticking "Quick Format" will speed up the creation/mount process dramatically. "Use AWE physical memory" will ensure that the RamDisk data is never written to the PageFile. Not much point in having one in the 1st place if it is...

You also can create a symbolic link for every cache folder to the new RAMDISK, so you don't have to change the variables.
@Helpful-Stuff
@Helpful-Stuff Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I agree you can use symbolic links. I did try using symbolic links when I was doing some testing before I made the video ... however, something happened in the testing which made me decide not to use symbolic links in the video. Unfortunately I cannot remember what made me decide not to use symbolic links. Old age :( If I remember I will add a more helpful comment!

any way to set up a disk cache with this? something similar to what primocache dies.
@Helpful-Stuff
@Helpful-Stuff 9 күн бұрын
I have just had a look at the ROMEX website. www.romexsoftware.com/en-us/index.html ROMEX has 2 products PrimoCache (that you mentioned) and also PrimoRAMdisk. ImDisk RAMdisk is similar to the PrimoRAMdisk in terms of functionality. Primocache has different functionality to a RAMdisk. So, I don't believe that you can get ImDisk RAMDisk to do the same as PrimoCache.
@drewphilip
@drewphilip 8 күн бұрын
@@Helpful-Stuff Primo cache is Chinese software that could be devastating because they gain root access, and is not open source. With this said, any and all implementations imitating primo cache with IMramdisk would be HUGELY appreciated!!!!!! Because it does work monsterishly.

great explanation. One question thouh, while shutdowning does it save only modified files or doesnt care and overwrite all folder contents (non excluded)? I am soo concerned about the 650gb tbw limit.
@Helpful-Stuff
@Helpful-Stuff 2 жыл бұрын
It's really difficult to tell what it is doing during shutdown. My best guess is that it is backing up the entire RAMDisk (except the excluded folders) ... this is based on the amount of time it takes when I have had a very large Adobe Premiere Pro cache. You can save your RAMDisk to an HDD rather than to an SSD.

I'm considering using a RAMdisk for the TEMP and TMP folders in Windows 10 Pro x64, but I'm concerned if this could affect Windows updates that require a restart. Do Windows updates write to these folders and expect to find temporary files there after a restart if one is required during the update installation?
@Helpful-Stuff
@Helpful-Stuff Жыл бұрын
I have had my RAMdisk for 18 months now ... during that time I have obviously had Windows Updates ... some of which required a restart. I have had no problems with either the RAMdisk or Windows Update. I understand your concern but I think my practical experience is that there isn't an issue. I think the "temporary" nature of files in TMP and TEMP means that if an update wants to store information in a file that is available after a restart then TMP and TEMP are not the place to save those files because any files in TMP and TEMP are by definition temporary and will not persist after a restart whether the TMP and TEMP folders are stored on a RAMDisk an HDD or an SSD. If a Windows update wants to store information that is available after a restart it must be stored somewhere else ... not in TMP or TEMP.

Sorry that there were no horses in the video :) Before COVID lockdown I was only doing horse videos. During COVID lockdown I started to do other videos that I could do at home. I changed the name of my channel to show that there were non-horse videos. At the moment I only do a few horse videos so I am considering changing the name of my channel again and not mentioning horses in the name of the channel.

@Helpful-Stuff
@Helpful-Stuff 2 жыл бұрын
The Windows TEMP folder is recreated and any files needed are re-created when required by Windows 10. So you do not need to save the contents of Windows TEMP when you shutdown and then reload them when W10 restarts.

Very helpful, thank you. Your speech was so good that I didnt mind the british accent, which I normally tend to despise. Although I do have one question, how the hell does the program even know where in the disk to put the files to during a shutdown? As far as the RAMdisk is concerned, the files could have come to it from even the desktop. How does it know where the files originally belong to? Edit: Nevermind, for some reason I assumed that RAMdisk was sending the files to their original places upon shutdown. Nay, rather, it just saves them to that one folder you specify and reloads from there upon restart. Why did I even assume that I wonder
