Those flip-flops were paying a homage to one of Brazil's biggest and most popular brands (and probably the most popular shoe brand): Havaianas. You just needed to Google Havaianas and read all about it to understand Miranda's white look haha Most Brazilians use havaianas when they go to the beach or to the pool, and depending on where they live, to go out in general. Rio, for instance, is one of those cities you can see people using havaianas any and everywhere. Curious fact: in many wedding parties in Brazil, the women usually receive a pair of havaianas as a gift as soon as they enter the party venue, after the religious ceremony, where they usually wear high heels, so they can enjoy dancing in more comfortable shoes. :D

Hey there! The flip flop thing comes from going to the beach on New Year's Eve. There are fireworks, and parties close to the ocean. It's very fun, families can go and leave around midnight, and young people will continue till the sun comes up. Besides being realy nice, there's also a conection in african-brazilian religions, in which there's Iemanja, Goddess (that is not the best definition, but it'd be something to that nature) of the seas. It's one of the more powerfull entities (of many) in the african-brazilian religions, and one of the most reveered around here. Organza's white look brought a reference to her too. I love how a simple reference as flip flops can be used to talk about so much from our culture...

We have a tradition of going to the beach to jump seven waves at the arrival of the new year. We wear flip flops as we know we will get our feet wet. Miranda's look referenced this tradition and the sheet behind her symbolized the foam left by the waves.

There is a common issue with the Brazilian drag race franchise (and tbh a lot of the other international franchises) which is that the challenges are too centered around north american queer culture, they didn't try very hard to adapt those iconic challenges to a setup that makes more sense to the queer brazilian culture, everything feels very unnatural. I didn't expect them to since it is more of a brand than anything else.

On the beaches, like Rio, is common wear also flip-flops because the sand. Another tradition is jumping waves (of the ocean) and ask godess (Iemanjá) for some gift. Once again, Love from Brasil! You guys are doing an amazing job! About the reading challenge, it was very bad, but the puppet one was worse because it felt more that they were attacking each other rather than reading, that's why Grag was cracking jokes, to ease it up a little bit. If you pay attention to the "untucked" moments, Hellena has been reading for WEEKS! And those come naturally. I feel we brazilians are better in spontaneous moments rather than script, that's why the funniest reads were on untucked or moments that the queens were bantering. About the flip flops, other people had talked about it, but you have to remember that new year's eve is summer for us and Rio can get up to 40º C (104º F), so, besides being on the beach, the heat makes us cariocas wear flip flops everywhere. Also, I don't know if you guys skipped on purpose, but Organzza's looks both are related to orixás, both are religious, that's why she was walking like that and she had her face covered on the first one. Anyways, thank you SO MUCH for the love that you guys are showing!

complementing what you said about Miranda, there is a superstition that involves the colors of the clothes you wear on New Year's Eve, like, white attracts peace, yellow attracts money, green indicates hope... I think this was part of her concept for white look. (I don't know if this is a brazilian thing or not but I hope it helps)

Ok, many ppl here already explained about Miranda's flip flops, but I want to add my interpretation to that. Cause it's not just that we wear them a lot in Rio de Janeiro and the fact that she's at the beach, but also, she's jumping the waves therefore she has to hold them to do it, since she's bare foot and could lose them on the ocean. (Still I personally don't like the look, but I'm grateful she brought this tradition on stage)

There is a similar culture to reading in Brazil, but it's not really done the same way. I remember Dacota saying during her review that she thinks the way brazillian drag queens read just doesn't really work on the show's format. About the flip-flop thing. It's pretty much what you found. Over here is somewhat common for women to take their flip-flops to events where they want to get looking their best, but will prefer to be confortable by the end (like a wedding party, heels on the begining, flip-flops once everyone is dancing drunk) or, on this case, to take her heels off once she gets to the beach.
