Good observation on how he attacks "blanket statements". He generally supports the underlying statements: motherhood is hard, don't hit a woman, believe women, etc. He just isn't a fan of those blanket statements that leave no room for nuance or rational conversation. Great video!

Exactly! And thank you, "blanket statement" is exactly the term i've been looking for. I really hate blanket statements too. I usually know what people mean when they use them but i just wish they would say what they mean instead of using those.
@Dizalddin
@Dizalddin Жыл бұрын
On top of "blanket statements" I think it also has to do with being hyperbolic. Hardest. Never. Always. Etc. Since colloquially we use them more as emphasis instead of their direct meaning. Actually.. Now that I think about it. I remember a time when people used "Like" a lot. "It's LIKE.. The hardest thing to do." So I wonder if it's just a natural evolution from that.
@Qalibrated
@Qalibrated Жыл бұрын
@@Dizalddin Well put, i definitely agree. Hyperboles are used quite often, i guess it can be an effective way to emphasize your point. I probably use them myself on occasion without giving it much thought but i actively try not to use them.

You are right about being a mother isn't a job. If someone think it's a job they shouldn't have kids. It's a big responsability but not a job. It's very rewarding if done right.

I think the key reference point is "difficult" to versus "important" but I think we can all agree motherhood is the most important.

"Motherhood" isn't the category. He's comparing what Oprah said which is "Motherhood is the hardest "JOB" on the planet"; so he compares that to other "jobs" which are more difficult. It's really a bit on the misuse of the English language. If Oprah used her words more carefully and didn't compare motherhood to a job, but just said how difficult it is to be a parent...this bit wouldn't exist. Words are important.

I see people following blogs and tutorial about motherhood.. Doesn't matter how much you read when the time comes instincts will take over and u will do what is supposed to be done naturally... Again it's the social commentary, and I love that they touched on that. It really is a matter of perspective. Working in customer service as an introvert with depression and anxiety is a completely different ballgame to someone with a different situation in the same position. I use to drive for Amazon and there really were some parts of it that were mentally more healthy for me, but the tradeoffs outweighed that; there's a deeper point on the boxes that everyone is put into as a whole and I've always loved the way that comedy can be a way to broach those subjects in a way that gets people laughing, but thinking at the same time.

You also have to realize that this is a skit, he's done 100's of shows and fine tuned his craft to get the most amount of reaction, just like any actor you've cried/angrily/laughed to. Bill Burr is a comedian and Bill's "shtick" is to create a "why would he say something so offensive" and watch him squirm out of the pit he dug himself in. Let's not forget that, that it's comedy, pure and simple.

My ex-fiance and I owned a Rottweiler. 120 lbs, big, fat head on him, biggest goof, clown, loveable dog, but to anyone outside of our family he was intimidating as hell. They're not tall dogs, but they're very muscular and stocky, with massive heads, and the black fur with mahogany/tan patches makes them visually an imposing and intimidating dog. My parents would say when they took him for a walk, even with a muzzle on, crowds just parted like they were Moses before the Red Sea. So when he talks about his pitbull mix, I totally buy it.

The biggest problem is people not realizing that they are glorifying calling motherhood a "job".. if its a job than you should do your kids a favor and adopt them out to a family who will enjoy living them and not view it as a "job"... i sont feel like being a father is a job, i love my son and i cant spend enough time with him. His mom is the same way. Neither of us have ever thought of it as a job because we are the reason he is alive and its our RESPONSIBILITY to make sure he has whatever he needs and the guidance to move forward. I gotta say ,ive watched 2 of your videos so far, both bill burr reactions. I came into the first one "no reason to hit a woman" expecting a bunch of modern day cackling hens playing victims, and im happy to say you all proved me wrong😂 i appreciate your nuanced views on these subjects and its shows that your husbands chose the right women. You guys dont seem to be arrogant or entitled at all and you accept truths for what they are and dont take yourselves way too serious. Regardless the fact that you wouldn't be aware id i hadnt told you, i apologize for passing judgement without giving you a chance. Sub earned. Looking forward to watching more reactions ,ladys 🤘

motherhood seems like it would be difficult if you view it as a job; take my mom for example, she's a marine corps level mom that's taking care of me: a 46 yr quadriplegic with so much genuine love and compassion... i'm an atheist but i bare witness that there are real saints on earth... she is one of them.. if eternity did exist, perhaps it does, she's someone who belongs there. thank you mama.

Bill is deliberately comparing the two in a way that he knows is disingenuous. He knows that the challenge of being a mother is the sacrifices you make eg career, time etc. It's not the individual tasks that are difficult, it's the entirety of the commitment and he knows that. He is asking politely for mothers to stop patting themselves on the back though and acknowledge the enormous difficulties that need to be faced in other professions. It's a good segment.

I have a problem with pitbulls. My best friend in college was an emergency room nurse. Whats worse is his special skills included helping toddlers and infants. He said he had a total of 23 animal attacks he had to deal with in that position, kids. 1 was a snake. All 22 others were eventually found to be pitbulls. No other animal or dog breed. So in my mind people who own pits are either ignorant, and didn't do research. Or they should be in prison if their dog gets at someone. I have 2 small children. I will never let them near a pitbull.

I think the "bash" on stay at home parents is that there is a difference between a stay at home parent and a homemaker. The stay at home parent very much fits into what Bill was saying. Make sure the kid doesn't die and then couch potato it out while allowing DVD's to babysit the kid. A homemaker is one that is taking care of the kids, the working spouse, AND the home. The working spouse should obviously help when possible, but their primary responsibility is to provide the means for the family to have a home and the homemaker is to take care of that home. Most parents that don't work tend to fall into the first category, and it breeds resentfulness and a lack of respect. There are those that say that homemakers are old fashioned or being dominated by their spouse. However, in a loving marriage, affording the opportunity of having a parent available at home for small children is an amazing gift that people underestimate. And just so I am clear, the homemaker can be of any gender. This isn't a patriarchal rant. 😊

He takes the context out of the statement and makes it funny, that’s basically the skits/segments you’re talking about (hitting a woman and being a mother is the most difficult job). I’m a man and know motherhood is difficult (not that being a dad is roses and sunshine either) and I know not to hit a woman, buuut… And that’s the funny part is people make it an extreme statement with “never hit a woman” and “the most difficult job”. There are plenty of good reasons to hit a woman, some absolutely necessary. There are many jobs far more difficult then being a mother.

No one is saying being a stay at home mom is the easiest thing in the world, where the issue lies with many women is the refusal to accept that it’s more so a privileged position to be in. We as adults can’t just ignore the fact that you don’t have any financial burden , are not forced to leave the comforts of your home for 8-10 hours a day and have literally all of the bills, finances, car payments, mortgage ect all rely on you. The first few years of a child’s life I can understand being tough, but even once the kids go to school and dad has to go to work…..there’s only so much you can try to throw at us to pretend that you have it so tough as a unemployed adult. Rather than getting triggered just accept that you get to have an ideal privileged position to be in as an adult woman.

As much as I love Bill Burr, I'm not always a hundred percent on his side. If you go get a dog from the pound, understand that animal was only a few short days from being euthanized. There are very few no kill shelters. If you save a dog or cat from being killed, if that's not rescuing them, then what is? But I still love me some Bill Burr. The man is a comedic legend.

Parenting is 24/7 even if you are working. The kids are in your mind most of the day or you have to think hard about who is watching those kids. It's one of the most important jobs and one of the most rewarding but it is not the most difficult, even if your kids are difficult. Bill is a master at exposing how we are eroding our language, much like Orwells NewSpeak from 1984. We've had mostly Labs but now have a Lab and a "Lab" (it's really a Pit mix but they didn't or couldn't offer it as such). Before these two, we had a Lab and a Husky and THAT dog was so cool. She had typical Husky coloring except for those blue eyes so looked like a very healthy coyote or wolf. Walking her on the trails would often end with a biker crashing off the side of the trail (and she was on leash and not barking or growling or pulling, just scary looking).

All I'm gonna say is: if you think raising a kid is hard, it's probably because you're a not the best parent and/or don't enjoy the work you put into it 🤷‍♂ Someone who's a prodigy when it comes to accounting, probably isn't going to think their accounting job that they enjoy doing is that hard
