excellent interview! i do cohort pricing in insurance and this is exactly the type of analysis i was looking for with regard to immigration.

an anology is how warren buffet manages cargo trains to create what is almost a monopoly. he bought the lines that supply power plants basically and thats rhe bedrock of the rest of the rail freight industry. he still "competes" with 3 other providers but they more or less would merge if legally allowed. no price issues deapite "monopolization" because they compete with other methods of transit + face a downward sloping demand curve. we dont consider them a monopoly because kn paper they arent but they basically depend on government contracts (power companies and military) which ensure their fixed costs are justified. rhey are the most efficient in the world but its really by happenstance. longshoreman union might seem exorbitant but it exists in a place and time and ultimately if they truly ask for too much they'll be crushed.
