Import Excel Events CSV into Google Calendar | Excel to Google Calendar Transfer

How to import Excel events into Google Calendar? In this Excel tutorial, I'm going to take a Microsoft Excel file, save it as a CSV file and then go put it into my Google Calendar with an import. I also answer as many questions as I possibly can that have been left on my KZbin channel comments section about this Excel to Google Calendar process.
To prepare the Excel file, you must have a header row, and the fields must be included there. Although there are more fields supported in the Google Calendar specification, only the first two fields are required: Subject and Start Date. In my file, I've included start date, an end date, a time to start, a time to end.

Sometimes, if the data for the time column doesn't import correctly, it may be because the Excel column is not formatted as actual time but as text. So make sure that the time column has your time, and then AM or PM, so that Excel formats it correctly before you export to CSV.
Another problem you might encounter if the CSV import to Google Calendar doesn't work is: make sure when you look at your file that not everything is sitting in column A. I've seen that many times, so the data must be in separate columns in your Excel file, not all stuck into a single column because Google Calendar cannot interpret it. There has to be a delimiter. You can fix that using the Data tab in Excel, Text to columns if by chance everything is sitting in column A.
When you save the file, make sure it's saved as a CSV file, not as an Excel file, as that is not supported. You can't pull Excel directly into a Google calendar, it's got to be a CSV (comma-separated) file.
Before you import the file into your Google Calendar, I recommend you create a test calendar by going to Settings and Sharing, add a calendar, create a test one and import the file in that one. If all is working well, you can delete this calendar and import the file again into your main calendar. This is so you don't mess up your calendar or fill it up with bad events.
A downside of this import process from Excel to Google Calendar is that you cannot add a column with invites, in Excel. So you cannot add invited guests to this import, you have to add them manually after.

End Time
The time the event ends.
All Day Event
Whether the event is an all-day event. Enter True if it is an all-day event, and False if it isn't.

Description
Description or notes about the event.
Example: 50 multiple choice questions and two essay questions
Location
The location for the event.
Example: "Columbia, Schermerhorn 614"
Private
Whether the event should be marked private. Enter True if the event is private, and False if it isn't.

I have been doing this for years. Every year there is a new problem. Either Apple or Microsoft has changed something. This time the .csv -file refused to go through. I had to close Excel, tell my Mac we are in the US (I am in France), restart Excel, import the .xls file again set with correct delimiters, and save it as American style.csv. Took me an hour to figure it out, but it's done. Date formats and decimals give me gray hair. My highest kudos to the way you help us with your knowledge.

Hi Chris, great video and helpful. Can you tell me how to delete events from a calendar that were added in error please? I mistakenly imported an ics file from a third party calendar to my main calendar and got overwhelmed with all their events. I was trying to figure out how to delete those events but could not determine how. The only thing I came across was something that said to replace File:Confirmed with File:Cancelled in the ics file itself. It said open the ics file in a text editor and make the change then save it and upload the ics file from the third party calendar to the calendar you wanted to delete the entries and that is what it was supposed to do. I couldn’t get it to work so I wonder if you might know what to do. Would appreciate any thoughts you might have and thanks so much for your help.

If you really want to do repeating events correctly, import the single event to your Google calendar then export the .ics and open it in a text editor. Then you just "find and replace all" for: END:VEVENT with RRULE:FREQ=YEARLY END:VEVENT That will make all the events repeating yearly. There's also "DAILY" "WEEKLY" etc. If you want to see what the proper fields are for different event settings, make an event with those options, export it and then open the .ics to see the format.

Hi Chris. I have tried this many times, but there is an error I just can't seem to fix. When I download your CSV file and import it (as is) into my test calendar, it works. The moment I take your CSV file, do Text to Columns, then save again as CSV file, it does not work. I have made sure that the date columns are formatted as dates and that the time columns are formatted as time. I have also changed the date columns to display as our format (we don't show the month first, usually it is dd mm yyyy or less common yyyy mm dd). I have not altered your CSV template in other ways. I tried to copy paste them in another sheet and it works (so why doesn't it work in the first place?). Hei Chris, thanks for the missing manual. In Europe, nobody would think of writing the date and time like that, but maybe it would work with other formats. I've been importing mainly all-day and multi-day events, and I really have a problem with the multi-day ones, even though some of them end incorrectly a day earlier. I can't figure out why that is. You didn't deal with multi-day events in the video.

Shouldn't matter. Each person has a primary time zone. Hello, google calendar told me the same. I was saving the doc from excel (and not google sheets). I think the problem was that on excel the .cvs use ";" to separate the datas and google calendar only accept the ",". Which is why we need to go through google sheets which does use the "," separation. Hope this will help

You have to delete the events from the calendar. There is no method to do a mass delete.
