Alternatively, you can use a nylon slip leash with no metal ring. Due to the many distractions, other "service dogs", pets traveling in and out of carriers, and people who will try to touch or grab your dog, it is still best practice to be on leash at all times, especially if your dog is in training.

Call disability services for your airline before you go and youll get escorted through the airport and walked thrpugh what to do it helped me soooo much. I also kept all his vaccine records and an extra copy of his dot form. I have had airports do it one of 3 ways and you can always request one. 1st way: they have you walk through while having your dog in a stay and then call them through and they will wand check their gear and maybe pat it down (i warned them if i have to be alerted medically he is aloud to break a stay) 2. Walk through with them and then have them use the wand if it goes off then theyd pat doen places with metal 3. Just have them use the wand and stand off at the side. 😊 I prefer number 2 as i dont like to seperate from my dog, but whatever works for you. 😊 calling and getting somone who is trained in disability services and laws was the best thing i did and helped so much. ❤

In the UK, (other than official assistance dogs and those small enough - 8kg or under that fit into carriers) dogs a re not allowed in the cabin. So if your dog goes by air their are these so-called 'specialized' animal freight companies that charge a fortune (I paid £1400+) for not doing much at all. Collecting your dog from your home (with the paperwork that 'you' and your vet have already processed together) and taking them to the airport to be processed and checked with your dog. I would like to state that the airlines will not let you just turn-up at the airport with your dog and hand it over for the flight. Therefore these animal air transport companies are there to make a quick buck, with limited input on their part. Also, many years ago when I immigrated from the UK to Spain, with my beautiful late boy Max, a chocolate labradoodle, he had to travel in a specially built wooden crate with open cage ends etc, in cargo for the 3 hour flight and collecting him at the other end took ages. It is a well known fact that an airlines business model is built on minimum space and maximum seats. But what I do not understand is that if you are prepared to pay for an extra seat (so that your dog can sit/lay in the footwell of that seat), what's the issue!. That old poor excuse of "well it may 'upset' other passengers' has become a bit old and boring has an excuse. Because I have travelled on many planes with dogs 8kg etc in cabin and have never heard a single bark. And yet that can't be said when I have been on a flight and had to endure the piercing sounds of screaming children through the whole flight. The airlines really do need to change this ridiculous law. Because 'losing a seat fare' is no longer a valid excuse. Personally, (like many dog owners) I would have paid double for the seat so my late boy Max could have layed in the footwell. And that in itself would have made the airline double their 'seat fare!".

I don’t know about American service dogs…“make sure your service dog has a really good heel“ where I’m from service dogs who don’t have a really good heel aren’t service dogs…
@breakingthechainsofpain114011 ай бұрын
Service dogs do not always have to be in a perfect heel position. While it is important for service dogs to have good leash manners, the specific requirements for their positioning may vary depending on their tasks and the needs of the person they are assisting. Service dogs are trained to perform specific tasks to assist individuals with disabilities, such as guiding individuals who are visually impaired or retrieving items for those with mobility impairments. As long as the dog is able to perform its tasks effectively and remains under control, the exact position of the dog may not be strictly enforced. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), there is no certification or documentation to label a dog as a service dog. The ADA defines a service animal as a dog that is individually trained to perform tasks or work for the benefit of a person with a disability. The law does not require service dogs to wear specific vests, have identification cards, or be registered or certified. However, businesses and establishments may ask two questions to determine if a dog qualifies as a service animal: 1) Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? 2) What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

what I don’t understand is why can’t they just let you go through the thing without having to take your dogs stuff off? let me explain, as a human they let us walk through those things with pockets, right? If a dog service vest has pockets, isn’t that the equivalent of your dogs pants? It’s like our pants, but for a dog, so they’re basically asking your dog to go naked through that thing because they’re afraid you’re going to smuggle some thing? Or are they afraid your dog is going to smuggle extra treats on board and cause the plane to crash? This doesn’t make any sense to me
@RayFlemming708011 ай бұрын
The issue isn’t pockets, it’s that it sets off the detector. If your pants set off the metal detector TSA would pat you down. Similarly, you can choose to keep your dogs gear on, but the dog would be pat down. It’s to ensure a person hasn’t stored a weapon within the gear.

Service dogs are supposed to be able to do their job with or without the equipment. If the dog is presenting poor behavior such as paying more attention to the distractions around it and not properly heeling, then the dog needs more training. Could just be touch up training but it still needs training non the less. Doesn't matter the age.
@breakingthechainsofpain114011 ай бұрын
And the dog was acting appropriately just saying dogs are not robots even the most well trained service dog has their off day might want to consider that before being judgemental.
@lexthebored812211 ай бұрын
@@breakingthechainsofpain1140 It's not being judgemental stating what I stated. I didn't give any kind of example of what I meant so I don't blame you for immediately jumping to that conclusion but I'll go ahead and explain what I meant a little more. When I said paying more attention to the distractions around them, I didn't mean a quick greeting or any other small behaviors that a dog is going to present. As you said, dogs are not robots. What I meant was: any kind of hyper focus on something other than their person, excessive barking/growling when not taught to as an indicator, breaking heel, poor recall, pulling at the leash, biting, pawing at strangers, chewing, etc. A service dog, no matter how long it's been on duty (technically they are never off duty), should not show any of those inappropriate behaviors. Proper care of service dogs also sees that they have small breaks throughout the day so they have some 'down' time. I'm tired of people slapping a patch on a vest when they have a dog just so they can bring a dog with them anywhere and everywhere knowing that their dog isn't trained. It makes it very difficult for people with actual service dogs.

Dogs were literally domesticated to serve tasks for humans, and some breeds were literally created to serve tasks like herding or pulling sleds, so don’t feel bad for them because they usually love to work

@@breakingthechainsofpain1140 If they dont have a good heel and stay by your side well even with distractions they shouldn't be a service dog.

@@Freegrem You are very ignorant on service dogs number one their is no law that a service dog had to be in a perfect heel and clearly you do not understand on how some tasks work that requires them not to be Ina heel or when they are in tight spaces that they can not be in a heel please educate yourself
