I always thought 行 in 銀行 is derived from the sense a particular occupation as in the proverb ”行行出狀元” or a place for trading like the “十三行” “金行” “洋行” names we take for granted in Conton/HK. Sidenote when 行 is used as a verb meaning “going to”, we pronounce it sorta like “흥”; when it’s used as a noun meaning “a line, 항렬, a place, it’s pronounced “hong”

i find myself doing the same thing when it comes to learning korean, researching some of the history about words to the point im learning more about the history more than the word itself, but hey its fun sometimes and interesting and actually may help sometimes learning this kind of words i guess it makes sense because learning the history of words helps us build some sort of connection to that word similarly to how we learn what an apple is and have this visualization of what an apple is

"Why do I always end up having to research stuff about Chinese to do that ?" Maybe because most of Korean vocabulary comes from Chinese ? Whenever I have a doubt about the hanjas in the Korean vocabulary I'm studying, I'm doing the same, going to my Chinese dictionary. And actually I wondered too about that 銀行 pronunciation, because in Chinese, it's yínháng (so 은항), not yínxíng (which would mean something else, like 음행 in Korean)... I'll try to fix that next time I'm going to Korea, asking people about the 은항 😀

When you began the explanation for 행/항, I hoped that the "항" in 공항 would be the same hanja, because it's difficult for me to remember 공항 (airport) versus 항공 (aviation, flight).. But looking in the dictionary those "항" are not related to that "행".. and they are actually two different hanjas.. 😭

@jingfuwu24012 жыл бұрын
dont know why i still dont feel that hanja is part of korean culture.... like hanja has no relation to korean language at all. maybe because korean is written entirely in hangul, unlike japanese, which kanji is still used.

You can learn more about how they're connected here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXa4o2uqbMZqsKM

Hanja absolutely has relation to the Korean language and culture. The etymology of the Korean language was heavily influenced by Chinese languages. There are even more Chinese loan/similar words in Korean than there are English Lone words in Korean. Of course Hangul is waaaayy more central to Korean culture though.
