The front door of the bus is for getting on only. Leave by the middle door, or the rear door if it has one. Some buses (New Routemaster / "Boris Bus") you can get on via the middle or rear door and tap in on the reader by the door. I've made that sound more complicated than it actually is, but as a rule, the door by the driver is for getting on only.
@jackwatsonepic626 Жыл бұрын
That is exactly why I came to the comment section because I wanted to know how you tap on and tap off so if I tap on at the front door of the bus and tap off at the back" at the end of my journey then will that will be ok 🇬🇧 ?🤔

@@jackwatsonepic626 There's no need to tap out at the end of your journey. Buses are a flat fee for any journey (£1.65) so there's no need to register where you got off.

Be careful when tapping in and out if you have multiple contactless cards in your wallet. You can end up tapping in with one card and out with another and then get fined on both.
@tonys16365 жыл бұрын
Keep your Oyster card or the debit card you are using in the clear card slot in your wallet on its own with all other cards in the slots on the other side of wallet when open, so when you tap that is the only card that will register. If you have a RFID wallet ensure the clear part of the card slot is in contact with the reader.

Tap on, tap off. Pretty simple, like GO Transit in the Greater Toronto area. For example, if you take the GO train or bus from Hamilton to Burlington, if you don't tap out your PRESTO card, you'll be charged the fare to Union Station Toronto. Also you have rebate and free transfers when you go from a GO bus or train to one of the local transit agencies (TTC, YRT, DRT, Brampton Transit, MiWay, etc). TFL contactless system is really confusing. I read the guidelines today and found out that you need to tap in while boarding but don't need to tap out in buses and trams. In tube, dlr etc however, you need to tap in and tap out. Most of the time, I try to pay through my fitbit and it shows a red light. I couldn't board thames clippers due to it.
@loveandlondon4 жыл бұрын
Only Google Pay and Apple Pay work when paying with tech. Otherwise, you got the gist of it so shouldn't be so confusing anymore :)
@Bungle20103 жыл бұрын
Because buses have a flat fare, so there is no need to know where you get off. All the others charge by distance so knowing where you exit is essential. Historically you've always been required to provide proof of payment (ie a ticket) on exit from trains and Tube, but not busses where you've always just walked off.
@TimothyEBaldwin Жыл бұрын
At Wimbledon you may need to tap out after leaving a tram to open the ticket gate, and a tram tap in also counts as a train tap out. Finsbury Park has also been confusing, with triple taps needed for one exit route! ( I understand that's fixed) The confusing thing is knowing when you should tap out using standalone validators when changing trains.

My question is, if you pass the visa card, is there a place to type your secret code? Thankyou!!!
@loveandlondon Жыл бұрын
No it's not swipe. It's a tap, using the contactless feature.

This was helpful thank you- Could you do a video on using public transport with kids? I have a 6, 9, 13, and 14 year old and I’m so confused. Apparently my 6 and 9 year old are free? But I’m not sure how they will get onto the metro without an Oyster card? And I can load a visitor child discount onto my teens Oyster cards but I’m not sure where to do this- I was hoping to do so right at the heathrow airport- but I’m not sure if I can.

I'm not sure about adding the child discount, but for the younger kids you just take them with you through the wider barriers which allow for multiple people, bags etc.

Hi, I am traveling with my family. We are 5. Do I need to get five cards or one and put enough credit on that one? Thanks

My wife and I are planning to visit London next month, for the first time in over 20 years and have found your videos tips brilliant. I am just a little bit puzzled regarding price capping on public transport. The price caps are showing as £4.95 (bus) and £7.70 (underground, zones 1 and 2) .. If I took 3 or 4 journeys on the underground and 3 or 4 bus journeys in a single day would I end up paying £4.95 + £7.70 for the day ? If that's the case, it would seen sensible to perhaps have one day only using the underground and the next for example only the bus, so paying £7.70 for one day and £4.95 the next. Regards from Whitley Bay
@loveandlondon2 жыл бұрын
So the bus cap is only for if you ONLY take buses that day. If you take one tube ride, then it will be the 7.70, and bus rides also contribute to the cap. So if you take one tube ride and 10 bus rides, you will only pay 7.70 for the day. It's a little confusing but once you get it, you get it :) And all of this is calculated for you so you don't actually have to worry about it. Plus if you pay with contactless card or google/apple pay you never have to worry about credit on an oyster.

@@loveandlondon Many thanks for your detailed reply .. I understand now. My wife and I are looking forward to our trip to London, at the end of November. We'll be going by train, from Newcastle.

I am traveling with my wife and daughter (she's 3) I understand my daughter will not have to pay for public transport correct? Also, I am using one credit card the entire time we are in the UK for 5 weeks (6 days in London). If I use just one credit card to tap in and out on public transport for me and my wife, how does that work? Will the system think I taped in/out immediately? Or is it smart enough to understand that I am really tapping for two people? So when I enter and exit I'll tap twice again for me and my wife? Would that also satisfy the daily cap or because I am double tapping, the system understands it's for two people so the daily cap will be x2? Hope that makes sense...Thank you !🙂

No you each need your own card (not your kid.) You can't use same card for two people.

Me and my travelbuddy are visiting London for 9 days. Is it best for us to get a regular Oyster card, a Visitor one, pay contactless each time or have a Travelcard? Greetings!

Very helpful and thanks for this! I have a follow up question which I hope someone else has asked (and I didn't see it). Do the same rules of trains apply for those trains going to London suburbs like DLR; c2c going east and southern line? And if using a contactless credit card, you tap it just like the oyster in those tap areas?
@loveandlondon5 жыл бұрын
DLR yes, but the other trains (non TFL) are different, you'll usually need a paper ticket.
@daryldeal5 жыл бұрын
@@loveandlondon ah ok. Can you give examples of these non-TFL lines in the London area? How about the train that goes to Cambridge?
@loveandlondon5 жыл бұрын
If it's outside London's zones, you'll need a paper ticket :)

All trains (except miniature railways) in London accept Oyster and Contactless, and many National Rail routes now offer barcode (called e-tickets) and ITSO smartcard tickets.
