great video as always, thank you! the fines incentive is unfortunately the same here in Prague - the controllers are having a cut from each fine paid on the spot and are always targeting tourists=( it's pissing me off cause so many times they give a fine for "over validating" your ticket actually - in Prague you only validate your ticket once, the first time you enter a metro/tram/bus and then it's valid for the selected time (so 30/90 mins or 1/3 days based on the ticket), you must not validate it again and this is something that so many people don't know because every country is different and it's not written anywhere. There is a similar channel to yours, called Honest guide - aimed at tourists wanting to visit Prague for anyone who is interested=)

Bonjour RATP is a fabulous application, I have had public transport applications in other large cities and largely inferior to that of the RATP. It must also be said that it provides information in real time about the problems of certain lines and gives an alternative. You shouldn't be surprised if it doesn't give the usual route, it's because there is a problem on part of the journey, super important for not getting stuck in a metro after paying for your ticket

I got to grips with the metro. The main thing imo to know about getting around is knowing which line you need to be on. If you are on the wrong one, get off at a station with a white dot and it tells you which lines you can change to there. Imo this is the main thing you need to know to get around. It's quite easy really. I seen some unbelievably busy. People packed like sardines on the metro 😂 But once you are on the correct line it's all pretty easy. Ty for another great vid :)

Does anyone know what would happen if you don’t pay on the spot & opt for the fine to be paid within 2 months, but then just return to your home country without paying? It’s not like you’ll be extradited. Obviously I would only consider this if I believed the fine to be unjustified.

First of all, if I purchase the Navigo Weekly Pass through the IDF Mobilité app, can I use it for my transfer from Charles de Gaulle Airport to the city? Or, since it is a direct transfer, will I need to buy a separate ticket at the airport? Secondly, since I intend to book my weekly ticket through the app, will I be okay if I just upload my photo in the app, or do I need to do anything else to be fully compliant? Thank you very much!

In fact, the zones will not disappear. The change mainly concerns the disappearance of origin-destination tickets for trains and RER. Instead, there will be tram/bus tickets at €2, train/metro at €2.50 and airport tickets at €13. The Navigo day will only be sold in "all zones", for €12. But the Navigo week and month will still be available for zones 1 to 5, 2 to 3, 3 to 4 and 4 to 5. Of course, tourists will only be interested in packages 1-5. But you should not be surprised that the others are still on sale.

Great video. One question. Once you have your Navigo Pass, are you able to add trips via the app on your phone, or do you have to load trips at the purple kiosk at a station? Thanks.
@KyrilPG15 күн бұрын
You can do that on your phone. Either by using your phone directly on the turnstiles without buying a physical Navigo, or by recharging trips onto your physical Navigo with your phone. The Navigo itself is only a physical media on which are stored trips. But your phone can do the same.

A word of caution regarding the paper tickets: the encoded strip on the back can get demagnetised and it will be unreadable by the turnstiles and by the controller's device. If your phone case has magnets in it, they can wipe the ticket as can your ipods case. Ask me how I know... Keep them in a separate pocket or part of your bag. The personnel will exchange a dud (unused) ticket for a fresh one. This does not affect the contactless travel cards like Navigo.

Very useful video. One thing I have noticed is that for many Americans in Paris, there first real use of mass transit occurs when they vacation in Europe. That can lead to a lot of confusion and figuring out mass transit for the first time in a new language can be quite an issue. I have only been checked twice in all my years of traveling in Paris and everything was in order but I heard horror stories. I actually think that the inspectors should have zero discretion kind of like the speeding cameras to avoid personal bias from creeping into who gets a break and who does not. A language gap plus the incorrect ticket can lead to a very frustrating exchange for both sides. I wish everyone going to Paris and planning to ride the metro watched this video. By the way, I have friend who loves the pronunciation boo boos every so often. She says that it makes Colleen very relatable.

Thank you for the updates! I saw that the paper tickets will be obsolete by the end of 2025, but will the loaded 'tickets' on the Navigo Easy cards also be? We came back with 7 tickets still on the cards, will we have to use them by the end of 2025? If so, I guess we have to go back and use them up! :)
@KyrilPG15 күн бұрын
They said all "previous fare system" tickets, whether physical or virtual, will be obsolete by the end of next year. However, the region's president, who is also IDFM's president (Île-de-France Mobilités, the transit authority of the city-region), said that "we'll work something out so that you don't lose your tickets". So, it's not set in stone, but they've signaled that they'll create a way to either redeem them to new trips or another way. I wouldn't be too worried about that. Old tickets (physical or virtual) will probably no longer work at turnstiles, but station's attendants will most probably be able to exchange them, even if maybe not 1 for 1. I've heard things about transforming these old unused tickets into a kind of immediate voucher corresponding to their original cost, to be applied as a reduction for new ones. Some others said they would simply be exchanged for new ones.... Long story short, it seems like your old tickets won't be lost, even though details aren't clear yet on the procedure.

Thanks so much! All of it very useful info. I need to go from Orly to my hotel next year, so good to know about the flat rate. Also, is RER included in Navigo too? And can you interchange in the same trip? Or do you pay a new one? Also, I wonder about the fines. If you pay later, how can they make you pay? Unless they get your credit card details... Thanks again!
@KyrilPG15 күн бұрын
Yup, beginning January 1st, 2025, there will no longer be zones. The transit system was already quite integrated, but next year it will only be split in 2 categories. Buses & trams (the "lighter modes), and metro, RER, Transilien (the "heavier modes"). This is only important if you take individual tickets instead of passes : 2 euros a trip on the lighter modes (including transfers in this category). And 2.50 euros for the heavier modes, including transfers in this category. A daily pass includes both and is unlimited, except airports. The current system already had both metro and RER grouped as long as you remained in zones 1-2. Beginning January, whether you travel from Disneyland Paris at the Easternmost station of RER A to Versailles in the West or to Melun far South of the region, or simply go from Bastille to the Louvre on metro 1, it will be a single 2.50 euro ticket. The only drawbacks of the new system is that you won't be able to transfer between a "heavy mode (metro, RER, Transilien) and a "light mode" (bus, tramway) on the same ticket. A transfer between the two categories will require another ticket. And you'll have to recharge your Navigo with 2 different types of tickets. A daily or weekly pass is simpler because it includes all modes and transfers between modes, only airports are not included. The 13 euro airport ticket from either Orly or CDG to your hotel will include transfers to other metro or RER lines.

Excellent video, as usual. I second the praise of the G7 app. Having access to bus lanes makes things much faster than with Uber, for basically the same price. Every time I've used G7 the taxi has arrived quickly and everything went smoothly. I was very surprised by the number of times we were controlled on buses in Paris. They are very vigilant, unlike in Bordeaux where I have yet to see anyone be controlled on the tram lines -- yet I see a LOT of people getting on without validating a ticket. Fortunately I'm diligent about paying and validating, and have never been fined in well over 50 years of traveling in France.

I just spent some time in Paris as a tourist and was appalled to find some single use white metro tickets didn’t work on the turnstiles to open the door/gate when leaving the metro so choose to buy the blue navigo pass instead. The Paris metro is so old and overused and not maintained enough so it’s flawed which is very frustrating and scary for tourists who don’t know how to work the system. This has got to be said. Paris is certainly not perfect and there isn’t any staff to help you when this happens so you can’t get out without following someone else out on their ticket. I was absolutely appalled at this fact. 😮
@KyrilPG15 күн бұрын
There's no validation to exit the metro... Are you sure you're not confusing it with the RER, which is the regional express heavy metro? They've replaced trains on several lines, and more than 1000 other trains have been ordered. It's one of the easiest metro systems as 14 out 16 lines have a single destination at each end.

I had watched one of your previous videos on metro tickets and got the SNCF Connect app (I purchased a ticket to test it out). What's the difference between SNCF Connect and IDF Mobilites? My wife and I love your channel and have watched a ton of your videos in preparation for our trip to France...we leave tomorrow!
@KyrilPG15 күн бұрын
SNCF is the public train operator in France. It operates TGV high-speed trains, conventional intercity trains, several RER lines or parts of RER lines, and most regional train services in France. RATP is the historical operator of the Paris metro and bus networks, plus most tramway lines and parts of the RER. IDFM, or Île-de-France Mobilités, is the regional transit authority or agency for the Greater Paris area. SNCF, RATP, Keolis (another operator), and others provide transit operations for IDFM. Which transit operator does what is not important for passengers. When you buy a ticket, it's valid on the IDFM network that covers multiple operators. So, for urban mobility, IDFM is the grand master. SNCF Connect is mostly useful if you plan on taking long-distance intercity trips on the high-speed or conventional national train network. If it was New York, IDFM would be a kind of super MTA, if you will, that would regroup the MTA subway, the buses, MetroNorth, the LIRR, PARH, NJTransit, etc. Under one single super transit authority. IDFM and the region have the same president. The RER is the regional express heavy metro, which is quite intertwined with the regular metro network. To sum it up: For travel in France, it's SNCF Connect. For urban and regional mobility in the Greater Paris area, it's IDFM.

The recent news about the upcoming transit strike has us a bit concerned and I was wondering if you'd consider making a quick video about what it means and how to handle it?? We leave for Paris on 12/1 but may be affected by this strike for our return train ride from Strasbourg back to Paris to catch our flight home on 12/12. Any thoughts or ideas on how we should handle this? Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!

the strikes usually only last one day and then they go back to work the next day. It's always best to avoid traveling on that specific day

100% agree the enforcement can be aggressive. My wife and I were on our first trip to Paris and were heading from Gare du Nord to our hotel at Le Defense. We bought our tickets at the counter in Gare du Nord and headed down to the metro. We caught the next train we saw that was headed towards or destination and disembarked there. When we attempted to exit at our station our validated tickets wouldn't allow us to exit, and we stopped since we were a bit confused. Almost immediately we were confronted about our tickets and told we had not purchased the correct tickets and told we had to pay a 35 euro fine, each! Not given any options we paid the fine on the spot and went on our way. I mentioned disappointment to the desk clerk at our hotel and he explained that there were 2 lines, and 2 exits at La Defense. One was a cheaper and slower line while the other was fast with fewer stops. Not sure how they knew but she insisted we had used the cheaper tickets for a fast ride, when we had used the slower. Rather than sending us to correct exit for the line we had used she took advantage of the confused Americans and fined us.

In la Défense there were only lines 1 (metro) and A (RER) from the center of Paris. La Défense station on line 1 is inside the regular metro zone 1-2, but line A is in another zone despite both being literally on top of each other. If you had to validate to exit, it means you took the RER A line, which is the faster one. There's no validation to exit the metro area. And you couldn't have used a different exit because you would have had to validate in order to exit from the RER area anyway. From Gare du Nord, you could have taken RER B to Châtelet, then transfer on line 1, and you wouldn't have had any issues. Or take metro 4 also down to Châtelet, then line 1 to la Défense. But I'm guessing you took RER B, then RER A, which made you cross the virtual limits of zones 1-2 simply because the RER A side of la Défense station is in zone 3 but all regular metro stations are automatically in zones 1-2. This is probably the most confusing station due to it being in 2 different zones depending on the line you take. It's pretty much like the difference between the Central line and the Elizabeth line in London. Both follow the same route for a part of their route and have stations in common. The RER is the regional express heavy metro, with fewer stops, longer distances, and higher speeds. Beginning January 2025, this won't happen anymore because all zones will disappear, and it will be the same price whether you use line 1, A, or the beautiful new RER E extension and station to get to la Défense.

I agree with you, it's upsetting. Next time, don't pay on the spot and have them call the police.

The last part about being fined for an honest mistake makes it all seem so intimidating 😞 I wish it was simple like the tube in London.

I always get a weekly navigo pass, however with the fact that they are doing away with the zones, does a ticket from CDG to Paris only allow you into the city or does it allow you to ride the metro for the day? I used my IWatch with my weekly navigo pass in September and it works great..

I also wonder about this! But from Orly.

the 13€ pass for the Airport is only a one way transfer to your final destination in Paris - you can't use that all day - once you exit the Metro or RER, that transfer is done

Thank you! I will be in Paris this late November and your video has made it more clear to me. One question though, we are planning to visit Disneyland and Versailles outside the city although on different days, what would be the most economical way to travel there? For Disneyland I think it was one of RERs, but what about travelling through Paris? (my girlfriend has

Disneyland Paris is located at the end of the longest Eastern branch of RER A. Versailles is located on one Western branch of RER C. Since you'll be in Paris this month, the new system won't be active yet. So, you'll have to take "destination tickets" or simply tickets that cover the corresponding zone. These tickets will include the trip from your point of entry into the transit system to Disneyland or Versailles. You do not need a different ticket to complete the journey to or from your hotel. If you take a weekly pass, make sure it has the zones you need. The RER simply is the regional express heavy metro and is heavily intertwined with the regular metro network. Disneyland Paris station is called Marne-la-Vallée Chessy, often abbreviated MLV Chessy. Versailles' closest station to the château is called "Versailles Château Rive Gauche". Both are end stations of their respective branch, so you only have to check that this particular RER train is bound for this terminus station.

If the Navigo Passes are no longer valid after December 31st 2024, what do we have to use? Our phones with no excptions?

First of all……you guys are the absolute best! Big fan. Here’s my question/situation: my wife is an international flight attendant who does west coast-cdg flights 2-3 times a month and I tag along with her. Consequently I still have over a hundred unused single fare tickets. I’m not worried about using them up by 12/31/25 (I will get a Navigo after they’re gone), BUT the problem is that more and more stations have transitioned to card reader only and the little suck through slot is no longer at the turnstile…….especially at Palais-Royal station. What do you do then? Will the ticket vendor exchange my unused single fare ticket for something that will activate the turnstile at stations that no longer accept them? Suggestions please. I won’t tell you how I currently get around this. I’m sure you can figure it out. I’m looking for a legitimate alternative. Off topic re your previous Entrecôte post. We prefer the Le Relais de Venise by Porte Maillot. A block from the crew hotel………it’s the only I would ever stand in line for.
@LesFrenchiesTravel14 күн бұрын
That's a good question and I guess I would try my luck with the attendant and ask if I can exchange them for a Navigo card. Doubt they'll agree but it worth a try. We had the relais de venise on our list but never made it. I think it was the original. We'll have to try it some day!!

Bonjour, with the bonjour ratp app on an iphone, can i use it to "swipe" multiple people into the metro system? If i have navigo on my iphone can i go in along with my wife, or does everyone single person in my party need to have the app /navigo? I understand with physical navigo card you cannot tap in multiple people. thank you -Chris Hells kitchen NYC
