I tested a trial version of Dorico 3.5 Pro and loved it. Purchased it after the test period expired, only to find it was version 4.0 by then, new licensing and new VST engine included. I'm on Dorico 5.1 Pro now and it's great, still it never quite reaches the charm of the old VST engine. I've been hoping to get my hands on a pre-used second hand license for old 3.5 Pro in addition, but now that I do, it's not supported by the new licensing system. So I'm buying it on the off-chance that this old USB dongle will be holding out just long enough to be worth my money... Duh! 🤨

This is a clear breach of contract in English Law. The Licenser is simply a validation of the intangible deal, that the purchaser has actually bought the product. If Steinberg are dishonouring that deal unilaterally, they're laying themselves open to breach of contract.

Absolutely! This also opens them up to a class action lawsuit! We purchased our licenses under the agreement of "lifetime access" to our software. that means, we paid for something we will no longer have after 2025, if we lose the usb, it breaks, get stolen, our machine hard drive goes down, or any number of scenarios. All due to their "copy protection scheme" they crammed down our throats to begin with! Who is this great for? Surely not consumers. It is great for Steinberg who basically wipes out every past release of software and it's users in one fell swoop in 2025. Meanwhile, there are thousands like me, who don't believe we need to upgrade every cycle. I have always upgraded my software every two to three cycles and it has worked out great. I have followed this rule with all software and has never failed me. That way, I stay on a very stable platform more of the time. It gives the developers and early adopters more time to work out bugs and issues. And it keeps me working more often. I have rarely with any software ever found that updating each go around on software was worth it. The updates are usually minor between one version to the next. After two or three, there is enough to justify it. Otherwise it is just another disguised version of a subscription if you pay to upgrade every single year. I am not mad they have changed over to this method. If they want this for all releases going forward fine. But those older and recent past releases should still be able to easily function basically as long as they are a company, without the fear of them being gone the minute their usb malfunctions! I have been a Steinberg customer for over 25 years. And this disgraceful conduct that they know they are purposely doing to force everyone to upgrade will end my working relationship with them forever. the same way Protools ended for me back in like 2004 or 2005 with their security schemes that were completely anti consumer. If you are a good studio engineer today, there are PLENTY of capable DAW's. Cubase is nowhere near the only game in town today. And if they want to act like they are they are gonna lose a lot of customers. Keeping the old system working indefinitely to support older software does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING negative to the new users or the newest software versions. So people on the new setup have not one thing to complain about with regard to leaving the old system up. But shutting down the old system DEFINATELY hurts thousands of users worldwide, who not only use stuff out of financial necessity (some of them can't afford to upgrade). But certain older versions are preferred by some of us. I use CB 11, because the support for the Quick Controllers is still very good! And I still use and love my quick controllers in my studio. Another product they dropped too quickly like a bad habit.... CUBASE, I IMPLORE YOU, don't do this to thousands of us and force us to stop patronizing your company.... CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE OLDER ELICENSER system for the thousands of users on old software. It costs you nearly nothing to leave the servers that are already set up running. But it will cost you massive lost customers and unhappy ones when you force us all off software we were promised lifetime access to! Never mind the fact, one or more of us may decide to class action your company... Pulling the plug on your end of the agreement is flat out wrong and SUPER BAD BUSINESS....

I have the old UR-44 USB audio interface that came with a "Basic FX Suite". That FX Suite uses the USB licensing system, and it does not show as upgraded to the new licensing system anywhere... I think I should get help with Steinberg to upgrade that software, I don't want to have that USB dongle in my PC.

@@willynanita I posted an update to this but the comment disappeared! Try again. So after redeeming the upgrade voucher and activating it in Steinberg Activation Manager. I then had to download and install TOOLS for UR-C V3.2.0, that updates USB driver, Basic FX Suite and UR-C application. When I reconnected my UR24 C the firmware was updated to version 3.20. Basic FX Suite V3 uses Steinberg Licensing so if you haven't updated to V3 I guess it still uses the e-licenser even if you redeem the voucher and activate it.

Thx for bringing attention to this! However, using the vouchers for upgrading my soft e-licenser products did not behave like this. The voucher code I was given was not for use with the e-licenser control centre, but needed to be input in the Steinberg Download Assistant in the "Enter your Download Access code" field. This was not, from what I can see, stated on the Steinberg website, but it works ;).

Yes thanks for that addendum 😉. The way I show is as listed on the tech article about download vouchers, you just click the redeem button and follow along. However, if you expand the redeem section you do get a download access code as well that you can use in your download assistant. I guess it’s a second way to do it especially handy if you still need to download the new version of the software with Steinberg licensing.

Thank you for the video, I am glad that it's there for people still using the USB e-Licensers. I moved to the new Steinberg licensing system quite a while ago, I was happy to be rid of the USB. I have the Amped Elektra as well, I think we got it for free at some point connected with some promotion perhaps. I know I didn't buy it on it's own, and I had it before i purchased Absolute 5.

For Cubase users specifically, if you are running Cubase 12 or 13 you are already on the new dongle free system. If you have Cubase 11 or earlier you will still need to have the USB dongle for it to work. So best to ensure your e-licenser keys are on the dongle and keep it safe! In general no real issues, but if you are trying to maintain an old computer with projects from 10 year+ ago and want to run those projects the e-licenser will be a requirement. The reality is a lot of legacy music gear, computers, operating systems are timing out and it is going to get more difficult to keep these systems going. Time to get those old projects backed up, multi-tracks converted to audio etc. Thanks for the video!

"multi-tracks converted to audio" is the best advice ever for backing up projects. It's a joy opening a 15 year old tune with 30 audio tracks that playback and just work. It's a nightmare opening a 15 year old project with 30 midi tracks and VSTs that no longer play.

But, you haven't shown us what to do if we only have Cubase 11 Pro. Forget "Electra" for now. With my 11 pro, it does not offer me any vouchers, in fact, there is no "Voucher" tab at all in MySteinberg menu. How do we go ahead upgrading to (say) Cubase 12? You did not offer any solution for that which is what most users concern. Can you please explain this, the no-brainer most common eventuality? How do we upgrade to 12 pro? You did not mention this at all. Key moments: 3:10, 3:38, 3:54,

I don’t think there are vouchers for that now but maybe just before they take down the old licensing servers they will have some specials to upgrade. Thats a round about way that I don't mind doing and I think it is doable as I ve done it before, where I then had bought 11 Pro but downloaded 10.5 instead (at the time). I wonder if you can help. I have recently bought cubase 14 though want to still use Cuabase 10. I thought i had registered it, though on my steinberg I can't find cubase 10 on my registered products , only Cuabse 14. That said, on my eLicenser Control Center i have Cubase Pro 11 listed in my USB-eLicenser and Cubase 14 is nowhere to be found. It's all got me a bit confused.

@@benstanbridge763 the Cubase 11 license on your e-licenser also works for Cubase 10. You can check that by removing the elicenser and seeing that you cannot run Cubase 10 anymore. You can try to register it still with Steinberg anyway though. Cubase 14 uses the new licensing system so you will never see it on the elicenser which is part of the old licensing system.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but this whole licensing thing is a complete f'ing mess. As far as I can tell, there is no way to move my halion 6 or groove agent licenses off the usb licenser to whatever the call the licensing system that doesn't need the dongle. So I use the dongle, oops, left it downstairs on the basement studio computer. 250' walk to go get it. Rince and repeat. Basically you can't even use the stuff you bought. They should just refund your money. I've been a cubase user since v1 which had to be in the 80's, and paid for every stupid update since. Something really wrong with this company.

AMEN! See my open letter to Steinberg in the comments. This is absolute B* shite by Steinberg. They are effectively shutting down all old software for good after beginning of 2025. Yea, this was always a big turnoff for me as well with Cubase, and why I never considered upgrading. I got a free license for the Essential version of the software with one of the Yamaha Keyboards I purchased several years ago, but never found it to be user friendly, and the eLicensor thing just was one of the things I found very confusing in relation to Cubase to begin with. It seemed to me, that they actually made it more difficult then it should be, to even download the software in the first place, and eventually just started looking into other DAW's. For instance, I have like 4 shortcuts on my computer that seemed to appear when I finally go thru the initial installation, that I still don't fully understand: eLicensor Control Center, Steinberg Download Assistant, Activation Manager, and Steinberg Library Manager! Big turnoff. Especially when you're new to DAW recording to begin with. With Ableton for example, you purchase the product, get the download link, install the software, and you have a fully functional DAW right on your Desktop in a matter of minutes! Cubase was way too frustrating for me. Even now, when I go to my Cubase account, I still wouldn't know how to upgrade the software, even if I wanted to too. It's confusing as hell! I have to say though, their customer service is pretty good. You can actually speak with a live person. (At least that's how it was several years ago). It it wasn't for that, I probably would even have the essential (or lite) version installed. Shame, because I do hear some people speak well of Cubase and all, but ya just about never hear how non-user friendly it is, especially in this regard. I really hope this is like the beginning to where they like, really get a handle on this issue. I'm sure they must have gotten complaints from others about it. Or, are at least aware of those complaints. It's kind of puzzling really. It's almost as if, they don't want you to use the software...

I’m afraid that it is not true that ALL Steinberg products are going to the new license system. I have Absolute 3 which include The Grand, Halion 6 , Symphonic Orchestra f.e., this package will not be going to the new system they answered me. Only if you ever bought those seperately. Yes they are not moving everything to the new licensing system. Only the products they keep supporting. So for those you’re stuck with e-licenses I guess. If they are on your machine I would move them now to a USB e-licenser though.

The Steinberg license fiasco is why I migrated to Cakewalk a few years ago. I tried to pay Steinberg but never got what I paid for. I wasted SO much time trying to get Cubase to work after I had paid for a license. It used to work for a couple of months and then refuse to launch. Great software but what a ripoff.

If you have Cubase 13 you do not need any vouchers. Cubase 13 only works with the new licensing system. The vouchers are for moving over older products to the new licensing system. Check your Steinberg account to see if you have any. There are also links in the description that you can check out to see even more details.

Basically you, me and all the thousands of others who don't use the latest versions, will have our agreed to "lifetime access" purchases wiped out... This hasn't probably sunk in for most users yet. I think the biggest issue that people don't realize is that if they don't upgrade by the shutdown date, they'll never be able to. For instance, anybody on Cubase 11.x and older would be stuck on their old version forever unless they bought a new license as a new customer with no upgrade pricing.

Sorry it wasn't clear to you, maybe the linked first article in the description will help. Basically the old licensing system supports two license containers (places to store your licenses which are checked by the programs that you purchased): 1. The USB e-licenser. 2. The soft e-licenser which you can think of as a 'file' on your computer but it only works on the computer that it is on. You cannot move/copy this 'file'. Both of these old licensing containers will keep working after the e-licenser service goes down, but only as long as those license containers keep working. And that is probably not forever, as the USB e-licenser (#1) will break at some point and you will get rid of your computer (or it will) break which contains the soft e-licenser (#2). The video talks about how to deal with that.

I have contacted Steinberg and I really hope they can help. However I've seen forum comments that indicate weeks. You would have a reasonable assumption that the installation should be flawless and do it's job without needing a degree in IT just to get the thing into the computer. That's aside from the internal bugs. It just suggests a money grab and "we'll cross that bridge when it comes to it mentality. Windows issues combined should be accounted for when releasing software.

I agree. Thise who wish to skip payments can find "fixed" versions anyhow, so this is just annoying paying customers. These times will be, for some people, be known as the dark ages, as a lot of software from this era must be activated online. Fortunately, some have seen the light and use just-in-time (when downloading) compiled binary files (personalized) instead, making both the vendors and the paying clients happy.

I pay for Logic Pro every month for the iPad, and it works well for me. Still considering moving to Linux full time on the old Macbook. Reaper is a less shitty solution that doesn't treat the end user like a criminal.
