Honest question, not being snarky: why would anyone want to do this? I legitimately don't get it. If it's just to simulate a real natural environment, those operate on the same fractal logic that is trivial to generate procedurally. If it's to use a real world environment, how does a topographic map accomplish that? It's not like elevations and plains look that different without the cities, vegetation and other factors that make them identifiable. I don't want to be a dick to this particular video because I don't know what was available back in 2017, but these days there are free addons that will download the entire geometry and texture for a region from Google Maps into a scene. I've only used it in Blender, where it's intuitive enough anyway, but I'm sure there must be something similar for Unreal where the community is so much more development-driven. But again, maybe I'm just missing what's supposed to be the usefulness of this process.

This process is far too lengthy and unnecessary. Here is the far simpler version with the same result in a quarter of the time: 1) Import heightmap into L3DT 2) Resize heightfield (4092 for me but may vary based on how big you want yours) 3) Export as RAW file 4) Open Unreal and click on the landscape tab 5) Select Import height map and select your RAW file 6) Change the settings to what you need (Z controls height of imported heightmap) 7) Get on with making your game :)
@clebo995 жыл бұрын

@daveg44175 жыл бұрын
4092 is NOT a recommended UE4 Landscape size. 4033 is. docs.unrealengine.com/en-US/Engine/Landscape/TechnicalGuide/index.html 4092 isn't even a valid Landscape dimension, 4093 is the closest valid size providing 31 Quads 2 Sections 2 Components, and it is no where near optimized. So your Landscape will be padded out from your dimensions anyway. I wouldn't use RAW either, it's way easier to use 16-bit PNG. RAW always assumes equal width/length unless you provide an ASCII header file. And it is way easier just to use the free TerreSculptor software to work with Digital Elevation Models and UE3. TerreSculptor supports more than 100 file formats and supports Unreal Engine directly. kzbin.info/door/_8MqFatjX_L7QqfuZpyHJg

Thank you for making this before - I know this is now very old - but in case anyone is still using this as a reference, the scaling is wrong... my advice is that jumping on Google Earth takes little time - if you're going to use a real world location, check what it actually looks like (hint: it's not a pin-cushion of craggy rocks). Also, be careful when converting units - UE4 operates on a 1 unit = 1 cm basis,... so approximately 30 units = 1 foot. Best bet is always to give your created landscape a sense check to see if it looks about right (if you actually want it to be realistic). If you 're actually looking at some sort of extreme world, then this scaling works. Also see below comments on how to simplify this process using RAW.

great tutorial...nuts the height map is literaly 12 pixels (4 pixels wide by 3 pixels high), it looks like as the area i am trying to get (a place where family used to live) is no more than a few hundred meters in total, which seems to be way too small for this to work. I am still looking but have yet to find a any way to get Accurate height data of sufficient detail for an area that small.

Hey Virtus first of all i want to say thanks for all of the great tutorials. Next i would like to ask if you could possibly make one on RPG item stats. For example if a item has plus stamina it will raise the charater health... thanks again

no worries I hope you were able to make sense of it, I am not amazing at explaining things I only just understand myself but honestly just watch the unreal tutorials, just any and everything on blueprints, networking stuff, stuff that you don't even think you will need because almost everything you learn is transferable, happy creating!

Might there be a way to soften the terrain? Your example looks good but not suitable if you want to populate it with buildings and what not.

Hi! Amazing tutorial, I got everything to work! But I have 1 problem you need to help me with! I did all the steps and saved everything. But when i reload/restarded the level/project i made, the landscape is gone. It seems like all the landscape squares is packed in separate levels. What should i do? Can i somehow merge all levels together or something? Please help! (I can't open it)
