Really love to see the techniques that are used getting explained, but I spotted 1 little mistake. At 6:15 Rochelle isn't Idle warping, she isn't idle. Rochelle is teleporting because she is stuck. Getting stuck on something (no movement at all possible) causes the player to be teleported to the closest teammate after a few seconds of being stuck. Some people may have experienced this in L4D2 when walking up stairs and getting stuck between the stairs and a ceiling. Just a minor mistake, but it's notable because it's an entirely different exploit. Loved the vid! Watch the TAS guys, it's crazy!

To more clearly explain what a TAS is or should be: TAS stands for Tool Assisted Speedrun. Obviously. This may use things like RNG Modifiers. Which is how the players get things they want when they want them. Payday 2, a game that is about Heisters stealing things does have an RNG Mod for it so players can get good luck always. Normally, a TAS is recorded Inputs that can be played back and watched by someone else. This is what TASBot does for AGDQ/SGDQ. The rule for a TAS is no using Cheats (Almost always). The exception for Cheats is to either unlock something that is community accepted, like a Harder difficulty (DKC3 as an Example) or to enable a special mode. External Cheat devices or programs and developer cheats are not to be used in the TAS itself. (With exceptions as noted above) But, can be used to route and experiment with the game to find the optimal RNG and see what is possible. For the Source Engine, the engine does allow the players to change the Timescale the engine uses. So, as an example. A frame perfect trick, can be made trivial by slowing down the game's internal speed. However, this is generally not approved by the Speedrunning community for Non-TAS Runs but is allowed for TAS Runs as the inputs when played back, show normal speed. TLDR: TAS is what a "Perfect" Speedrun looks like. Using various tricks to make RNG Perfect and Tricks trivial to accomplish.
@rompevuevitos2224 жыл бұрын
about RNG, they RARELY if ever modify games for purposes of RNG, they just use save states or reload until they get lucky, since the game essentially plays itself this is just a matter of waiting But modding the game to alter how it works it's rarely done
@killroy4584 жыл бұрын
the way TAS "manipulates" RNG varies by game, but it is never directly manipulating the numbers. Take most fire emblem games for example. every time you change where a character is moving, and the pathing arrow re-draws, it advances the RNG, making it possible to manipulate. Games like Pokemon, or other RPGs can be manipulated by waiting for specific frames, or taking specific paths.
@rompevuevitos2224 жыл бұрын
@@killroy458 Regarding RNG manipulation, a small fun fact is that i've found that most GBA games use RNG that changes the number every frame, while newer games only have their RNG update when certain actions are done Weird considering that it's more CPU intensive and an older system would suffer more from it
@CalculatedRiskAK4 жыл бұрын
@@rompevuevitos222 Programming the RNG to advance the seed every single frame is much easier to put into a tiny, limited space cartridge. It takes a couple of lines of code, where programming the RNG seed to advance for very specific actions takes up more and more space, the more intricate you want its behavior to be. This counter intuitive approach, using the more CPU-intensive method on an older game, stems completely from GBA games having a very strict ROM size. It's a balancing act, basically. You sacrifice processor load in order to gain more space for the rest of the game.

I used to help a guy doing TAS speedrun, the precision required to pull all these stunts are insane. For example, if you throw item / shoot grenade launcher just a few milisecond too early, the person you're trying to boost will get blocked and straight up falls. I used to help a TAS enthusiast who was later featured in a couple of chaos gaming speedruns. The skip elevator trick in Dead Center has a window of time of less than a second, if you warp just a tad too early you'll die and fail the entire speedrun. The bunnyhopping also takes a lot of practice as you have to constantly build up speed while avoiding obstacles. They even have a campaign map just for bhop training.

If the rest of the maps are similarly interesting to watch, you should absolutely make another video covering the other parts. I suggest this because i could watch the video 10 times and not catch half of these things, like why they were swapping difficulty levels, edge clipping to have safe falls, and that explosive shotgun shot to break the fall. All the calculations involved are very interesting to listen to!
