One suggestion for the coffee table books is cook books - many are really beautiful and for someone who loves to cook or bake they make a great useful decor item. I have a large collection of cookbooks, both modern and vintage, and I rotate them on my coffee table. Regarding motion sensor lights, I use plug in ones in the hallway outlets, this way they are not annoying anyone and serving the intended purpose.

Yes to cookbooks! At least they have a purpose. Even if you don’t use the actual recipes, going through them is inspiring! Or yes to any book you actually read… I don’t get the idea of big books that only serve as dust collectors. There are bookshelves for that 😂

I just bought 2 cook books and I was like "THESE WOULD MAKE GREAT COFFEE TABLE BOOKS" and everyone picked on me for it lol. If I went to someone's house and they had one I'd be flipping through, taking pictures of recipes talking about them with the host. I think it would be 100x better than a book that is just for looks

We've found that motion sensor lights are SUPER helpful in entry ways. We usually park in the garage and enter the house through the laundry room. In the evening it's too dark and you can't turn the lights on if your hands are full. We put a motion sensor in the laundry room and it has made a world of difference.

Yes, I have motion sensor in my laundry room, garage, one on the top of the stairs, one on the bottom of the stairs, one in my master closet, and one in a hall. They are perfect when placed appropriately, like flat paint is appropriate for a ceiling. For me the best part about motion sensor lights is husband not complaining about lights left on

Coffee table books are only impractical if you don't use them, or if you buy them just to have a book on your table. I love a good coffee table book and I have them, but those are the books I actually read. Get yourself a book that actually represents your interests or who you are. If you love photography, get a photography book. If you have a favourite movie, get an art book with scenes, costumes etc. from the said movie. If you're an outdoor-sy person, get a book with landscape photos or plants, if you're love tattoos, get a book with photos of tattoos etc. Make the coffee table book reflects your interests, and I'm sure you'll flip through it from time to time to get inspired. And your space will get more personal to who you are, which is what home is.

I asked for, and received, a few very trendy coffee table books for my birthday! I was very excited until I stared flipping through the pages. The books had nothing to say about my interests or personality. They were gorgeous but they got sent back. Instead I have selected books that reflect my interests and ones that I think my guests would also enjoy flipping through as well. One of my favorites is just titled, “Fair” and it is filled with beautiful pictures from fairs from all over the Midwest. If you’ve ever been to a county fair, this book would no doubt resonate with you! And all of my current books came from my local thrift shop!

Haven’t coffee table books been a thing for like 50+ years? I just don’t think incorporating books as decor will ever go out of style! Granted, specific “trendy” coffee table books like Tom Ford, Chanel, etc, are ubiquitous now, to the point of being overplayed and generic. (Although I am tempted by AD at 100. I’m only human after all!) I prefer to purchase books on topics that interest me, or reflect something about my life. Regarding price, they don’t have to cost so much. Secondhand is the way to go! P.S. Congrats on the show Kiva! Love you!

I’m glad someone mentioned this. Both my parents and grandparents had coffee table books. Oh and come to think of it, so did my great-grandparents. I personally like a lot of books. But not for decor. I like to think of my books as working books. I use them for reference in my work; as great as the online world is, in some ways books are just better. Probably because the majority of book authors have editors and clearly most online content does not. Pleasure books are read and then passed on. I can read on my phone or tablet but I prefer the tactility of paper so I still read lots of physical books. I don’t know whether to be delighted or dismayed that in the digital age more paper is made and sold than ever.

My tip for shifting flat rugs is to sew the rug pad with a few stitches on, at the corners and if it's a big one maybe every 50 cm or so. It does not have to be pretty, just a tapestry needle and some strong yarn, the thickness of the rug makes the stitches disappear nonetheless. And if you want to use the other side of the rug, it's just a few snips. It's better than stick pads that may leave a permanent sticky residue on your rug or even the floor.

I love flat paint … I had flat paint when I raised my kids and had 2 huge English Mastiff’s ( 200lbs each!) that were Mostly indoor dogs. I just always had a small container of paint and bag of sponge paint brushes… I could walk through the house and quickly touch up. If you’re worried about blending… you can also water down the paint. I did this for an apartment I lived in because the paint I purchased to touch up was, one higher quality and you could tell … watering it down helped it blend well as I didn’t want to edge all the walls.

I painted my bedroom Bunglehouse Blue, a jewel toned dark blue, a couple of months ago. The blue is very soothing and the richness of the paint is so pretty. It works with my red oak floors. The room gets northern lights but it never feels cold or dingy. I can’t wait to cozy up in there in the winter! Maybe I would feel differently if this were also my home office but it’s just my big comfy bed, two nightstands, an antique fireplace surround, and an antique chair. I think it’s perfect! I actually disagreed with a lot of these. I love books and I’ll always have books incorporated in my decor (I’ve also read all of them and only get coffee table books I appreciate). My flat paint in the hallway cleans up easily with a magic eraser. What you describe as “closed shade lamps” are task lamps, which are only meant to light a small area like a desk or table, not the whole room. Although I did always hate my then-boyfriend’s arch lamp. It was always in the way!

Hack to keep flat woven rugs in place... use the IKEA STOPP FILT. It creates tension on top and bottom, so the top of the pad stays with the rug and the bottom of the pad stays with the floor. Recommended to me by my bathroom designer and after a couple years it is still excellent!

My painter told me that "flat" was different than "matte". Flat is not washable, matte is (according to him -- he uses Benjamin Moore).

No both are not washable at all. Only BM and a few others make their own version of flat which is indeed washable. And flat has more shine than matte if only a minimal amount.

I have a large sisal rug and a long sisal runner and I use a carpet pad under each one. It makes them stay in place.

Motion sensored lights were put in the closet and the pantry in our brand new house. We didn't even know about it until we moved in, which shows how attentive to detail we were during the planning and building process... 😆 Anyway, I totally agree with them being incredibly inconvenient in the bedroom! We only have a curtain between our bedroom and our closet (not enough room for a door) and the light turning on randomly in the middle of the night is SO frustrating! In the pantry it works pretty well though. When it actually turns on.

My solution for rugs is double sided carpet tape ,it works on any type of flooring and keeps my rugs in place and totally flat .As long as you don't need to be able to pick up the rug and put it in the washing machine, it does the job very well .I freely admit that the concept of coffee table books has always baffled me a bit .Unless they are in the process of being read I don't really understand putting books on tables ,esp tables that are there for holding drinks ,snacks ,remotes and other things you want to have to hand .

I've recently seen a room tour by some dude, who's apartment is completely black, with only LED lighting to give light to the place. Didn't look that bad, but very compressing

My "hack" for rugs is Ruggable or a similar non-skid base system. Works great for the heavy traffic area in the kitchen. But I also don't have any large rugs in the house%)

It's so interesting - we have a lot of different things in Hungary or in Europe in general. Fro example I never saw anyone with satin or glossy walls.

I have always used flat paint in every room excepting bathrooms and kitchens. If you use a high quality paint it will cleanup beautifully.

As a decorator I always avoid Farrow and Ball and get my clients to have the paint colour-matched and mixed instead. That is unless they're adults with no pets and no kids. It is a bugger to touch up. Saying that, I think the period of the house often dictates finishes and I love the flat and eggshell look in older homes (in the UK, older than 100yrs). I can't abide satin personally but I know others like it.

Open shelves and wood countertops and sinks with out drainboards. Open shelves means means to rinse every dish if a fly gets in the house, have to clean them at least once a week. Wood counter tops have to be sanded and oiled at least once a year, and there is no place to put drain board. Sinks need to have a drain board, not everything can go in the dishwasher.
