Ippon seoi nage was the first throw I learned as a child. To this day it's my favorite and most satisfying big throw.

as someone whose go-to technique is the standing ippon seoi nage, i have found that 1. it's better to attack either off the collar grip or the armpit grip (i would consider a grip on the bicep an armpit grip as well). i've literally only ever seen one example of someone successfully attacking ippon seoi nage off the sleeve grip. 2. although it's possible, i find it hard to attack when my opponent stiff arms me on the side of my collar grip because my opponent can use the stiff to keep me further away from him. so although i can turn into the throw, i'm not able to make close contact. so usually in this situation, i prefer to break the grip first and then attack off the grip break. one of the ways i do this is by turning like i'm doing a korean reverse seoi nage (but not actually turning all the way through like a reverse seoi nage) and then pulling my lapel away to break the grip. 3. the split leg variation works very well for me.

That's the Travis Steven's way ! I love it. To unprepared beginners, this is a sure kill. Of course there are a lot of little tricks to implement, and I am on my way to master those. Also, what do you do against a lefty ? But man, does it work ! Just the day before, I tried this setup and I could throw anybody.

What you really want to focus on when you want to throw someone with ippon-seoi-nage "effortlessly", is not just centre of mass. A lot of people seem to understand that your centre of mass, should be below your opponent's (= your belt needs to be your opponent's belt). But there are a few more factors to consider if you want to do a good ippon-seoi-nage: 1) as mentioned before, try to get your centre of mass, below your opponent's. 2) try to give your opponent forward momentum. The greater the velocity of your opponent, the easier the next step is. 3) your opponent's weight needs to aid you in your throw forward. Which means that if you draw a line from your opponents centre of mass straight down, that line should exceed your centre of mass. (The angle of the line changes the more momentum forward your partner has. However, usually it's pretty hard to bring your partner forward with great speed, therefore it's almost neglectable in most cases.) I think one of the biggest mistakes people make, is that they do not leave enough room between themselves and their partner while entering the technique. This has two consequences: 1) if your first step towards your partner brings you too close to your partner, you don't have enough space to do kuzushi. 2) also, you don't have enough room to turn properly without pushing your body into your opponent. Latter 2 points make the idea that you need to give your opponent momentum forward impossible, and even might result in the opposite. If so, it'll be way harder to make your opponent's weight help you to throw forward. You'll need to enter too deep in between your opponent's legs, that it becomes unrealistic. A tip that might help to actually execute ippon-seoi-nage in randori is to enter fast, to give minimal reaction time for your partner to regain balance. Getting yourself back in balance is an automatic, unconscious action. Therefore we need to break our opponent's balance and enter the technique almost simultaneously. Hope this is at least a little bit understandable, if you have any questions, comments or criticism... Feel free to comment. Trust me, I'm an expert!

It's funny standing seio is one of the only throws I get in randori here and there. I have never hit drop and I almost never do it. My other throws have all been less effective than standing seio and I'm actually a tall guy for my class. -73kg and like 5'11 ish.

Excuse my ignorance but what does the red and white belt in judo signify?
@JudoGeoff Жыл бұрын
It is awarded when someone advances to the upper dan ranks, beginning with 6th dan (6th degree black belt). You'll notice that he wears a black belt in some of his videos and a red-white belt in others, as he's still a "black belt" in the sense that everything from shodan (1st degree) up is a dan rank that is typically associated with being a black belt in one of these arts, and many instructors who have earned these higher belts still stick with a "plain" black belt when they train or aren't doing anything ceremonial. Formally speaking, the "colored belt" ranks are known as kyu ranks, with their numbers in *descending* order as rank increases. Thus, white belt is the highest numbered kyu (I've generally observed it to be 6th or 7th kyu in the judo systems I've seen), while the lowest numbered kyu is the final rank of brown (first kyu or "ikkyu"), which comes right before the first black belt rank (1st dan or "shodan"). The dan ranks are black from 1st through 5th dan, then red-white (like Shintaro's belt in this video) from 6th through 8th dan, and then solid red for 9th and 10th dan. You may observe slight variations depending on the school/system, whether they're affiliated directly with the Kodokan (the school in Japan where the founder Jigoro Kano first began teaching judo), etc. But the info above should be generally correct for most proper judo schools you'll encounter.

@ryansmith9138 that reminds me of a ridiculous back-and-forth I got into with someone a while back about tournament belt/gi rules, and the guy was obstinate about how any program/school/tournament that isn't IJF-affiliated "doesn't count." It was baffling to me. They're doing all the same techniques and training just as hard, but because they might swap belts for tourney competitors or don't pay dues to a given organization, it's like they don't exist. I can think of few things that are farther from the spirit of good martial arts in my mind than such arbitrary, tribal gatekeeping. Oh well. I for one am glad that Shintaro teaches with a broader mindset. I just want to learn the art. I care far less about this week's exact accepted rule set for competition at IJF-sanctioned events. 🤷♂️
