Hi my Friends, due to the Tina Briggs comment I decided to improve my sandstone wheel sharpening machine and added the dripping water system instead of the water trough. It's important to learn from people with better knowledge of the things we wish to learn. Hope you enjoy this video. Thank you once again Tina!

Dripped water to make a pasted .... Well that makes sense. I'm glad Tina taught me something new today.

Traditional hand cranked wheels were operated by two people, the one doing the cranking would be behind the wheel which makes the top of the wheel come towards the person doing the sharpening. The knife or axe or whatever was being sharpened is then held with the edge being sharpened facing upwards away from you. The wheel also rotated much slower than yours by about half, but I do not know if this would make much of a difference. My father was the one who used these wheels but he has passed on many years ago, I was usually the one who had to do the turning. :D The wheels work great as they do not heat the blade being sharpened which makes the edge stay sharp much longer. Thanks for the videos.

yes, have also the shaft for hand power, unfortunately my wife don't want to be the power part and son is 2 years old. Most of my vieo sections run 4x faster, but I belive the stone can do the same job if run 2x slower. I have to say I have long term sharpening experience with various medern systems, but this old school system is just something new for me.

I think that it'd be better to run it through a water bath for a few minutes before starting, that paste doesn't form with a MOSTLY dry sandstone wheel, try letting it turn through the bath for a few minutes before using it, then drain the bath and use the dripping water system, it won't absorb immediately, similar to a whetstone. Cheers!

Nice welding! I see from looking at your older videos, Czech language. My parents were born here, but their parents (and grand) immigrated from Czechoslovakia (1870s -1913). I'm guessing your Slovenia. You clearly like sharp cutlery!

+Fred Hababorbitz thank you, I'm from Czech Republic and I'm happy to hear about your Czechoslovakian roots. The reason why I like sharp toos is that I was director of Czech Tormek importer for more than 10 years. Anyway I'm just starting with small family homestead so will take a look at another matters in near future.

Uhm.. How exactly is the ''paste'' formed by dropping water onto it? If I drop water in droplets onto my Whetstones no paste/abrasive is created. It's created by sharpening. Also, washing it away will leave a clean surface with fresh abrasive. Might even end up clocking it up with all the metal ''shavings'' being ground off.

Nice update to the sharpening rig. I have to say though, seeing you run those parts on a wire wheel was seriously cringey. I hate the things, always end up tearing skin off my fingers. Also: Is your work table an old manhole cover?
@make_it
@make_it 7 жыл бұрын
+jason sexton there is so important to be very careful when cleaning things with wire wheel this way. I have practise when made reconstruction of my motorcycle, needed to clean a lot of parts. Yes the table is old manhole cover. Its pretty good for these small projects.

Dymbox vyrobíte, natočíte a my ostatní budeme kopírovat!
