Now this is interesting. Good job!...Can i suggest something. Last part where you start to grind that blade....outreached arms and not in control if you dont mind me saying. Have to get right on top of that stone. Have it almost between your legs where your grind position is above your knees while in a seated position. You need to be in control not the stone in control of you. Have it grind away from you not towards you. Watch the speed....too fast & those things can do serious injury if it lets go. Drain the sump after every grind or half that stone will absorb water, the other half or exposed half will not making an imbalance for the next job.....that wheel will serve you well for many years. Good luck with it........

Nice! You've probably done it by now but it could use dressing, also I haven't seen many wheels (and I've seen 3 on youtube! :) ) of this size used like a normal bench grinder, they usually have the wheel spinning "away" from the operator and the workpiece contacts the top of the wheel, in one case the operator used a lever to push the work against the stone.

Does anybody know how fast this kind of waterstone eats away steel ? My grandfather has one sharpening wheel, but its man powered, and its just painfully slow to sharpen knives. I am just wondering if its worth the effort and the money to make a new base and put an elecric motor.

Great vid! Just a tips, when cutting a thread on your lathe, cut a relief groove where you plan to end your thread before the threading operation. Due to the absence of this relief groove at the end, without the flexion of the part, the tips of your tool would have flown away... And do not stick out the part that much from the chuck, do you see the huge deflection when the tips of your tool reach the part ? Cut your thread closer to the chuck or put your tailstock, then you will be making real chips and it will be a lot easier (plus your threads will look a lot cleaner) Not trying to be the asshole critics police here, just giving a tips ;)

ashura izumi This one has cut marks (see the sides of the stones) which tels me its a "newer" one.Probably milled. Realy old ones are hand carved and chiseled. My grandfather had grinding wheel and when i asked him how they were made he answered me by simply saying "With hands and tools. There are no people left who do this anymore" Its kinda sad that such a beatiful craft is dying. By watching this video i am trully inspired to make my own sandstone grinder. And in later conversations with my grandfather he told me that his homevilage had a river where this master craftsmen would often find sandstones. Maybe some cloudy day i will take a hike there. Freerk, the part where you push that metal plate against wheel to grind is too short so I didn't see what happened. Does it grind slowly or fast or do you think it needs to be improved, i.e. it is too dull???

Has anyone put a new shaft in the middle of a sandstone wheel on a treadle grinder? If so how did you match up round shaft with the square hole in the stone?

It's usually done with a block of wood fitted to the "square" hole in the stone. Not as easy as it sounds. good luck
