For those of you who are ashamed of your accent just know that a person with an accent is a person who speaks at least two languages, Right off the bat, that should be a confidence booster , I speak three languages and while I consider myself fluent in English I still have a little accent however, I never lose sleep over that, I’m trilingual and down the road I’ll be adding a fourth language to my repertoire, that alone gives me a lot of confidence when speaking…. Accents are part or your identity, be yourself, be proud of who you are.

I want to share with you one advice I received many years ago and that has worked phantastic for me. Listen repeatedly someone speaking your own mother tongue with let’s say English accent for instance. It is much easier to realize the intrinsic prononciation details when you hear in words you are very familiar with. Second step, try to imitate that English accent in your own language. This helps you fix that prononciation and tone in your brain. Finally, try to speak English with the same accent… Note: it takes a few days… then it goes very quickly.

Lisa, the last tips about accent is encouraging. I used to receive negative comments about my accent. When I spoke with the person over the phone the first time, she was able to understand me. On the next phone call when I explained to her how much balance she owed, she started to blame my strong accent, and complain that my sentences were incomplete. She had such a difficult time to understand me. I was up sad and lost my confidence of taking phone calls for a while.

Hi Lisa, One thing I would like to tell you that I've been struggling to understand some of the English accents that American people speak. The native accents there are kind of hard for me to understand. I spoke with some people from New Jerzy and California and I had no trouble understanding their accents. But when I spoke with some people from Alabama, I had trouble. Moreover, I find it too hard to understand some of the African Americans' English accents. Could you please say something regarding this? Perhaps you can make a video comparing these accents in a video and explain. Thanks in advance .
