Do you have a favorite highlight and shadow color you use in your paint schemes?

I like Vallejo's Ice Yellow and Glacial Blue for highlights, and Dark Sea Blue for shadows. Love the background knowledge about shadows.

Yes; Kimera’s Carbon Black and Schmincke Primacryl Titanium White ! Although I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said, Black and white (and therefore desaturated palettes) are not boring at all; actually it open you up for another tool in your arsenal: saturation contrast. That said it’s true you should not learn painting with black and white until you have at least a basic understanding of chroma and saturation. Also, Blue and yellow work very well for highlights and shadows because their peak chroma are respectively in dark values and light values making for saturated lights and saturated shadows. Thanks for all the high quality vulgarization you put in your channel, I wish I had this available couple years back !

This is a great beginner starting point! If you want the super realism for the outside in sun figure you can also add warmth to downward planes shadows, since there's no sky to cool them. The funny thing about light is that it's always contextual and relational. We can see the same colors in different places and perceive them entirely differently, so I never really rule out any colors until I try them out. This does mean I have a lot of oddly colored minis but things tend to work out one way or another

I've been happy with using Payne's Grey and a Candleglow yellow for zenithal priming to at the very least get a kind of "read" on a mini.

I actually knew about a very similar technique way back in the late 1980's. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. I think the main problem back then was that I was using enamel based paints and you had to be very careful about how much you added to the base colours. I think I'll have to try this again once I get a Navy blue. Thanks for reminding me :)
@joshelguapo55632 жыл бұрын
You could just mix black and blue or black and brown

Whenever I paint shadows I always think a quote from a discworld book. When the Patrician was at the Assassins school he never wore black when "working" he would always wear dark greens and grey to blend into shadows. I like to use Citadel Incubi Darkness (dark blue) for shadows a lot. Have not used yellow much for the highlights though, going to give that a try. Thanks for tip, always appreciate the paint theory that supports your videos.

I'd really like to see you revisit this for miniatures with cold light and warm shadows. For my shadows, I've been experimenting with a Payne's Grey/Burnt Umber ink weighted more one way or the other depending on the temp I want. Would love to see this explored more.

Going to finally dip my toes into volume. Usually I stick closely to the GW style (Base, wash, Layer, Highlight), but I've been doing some small branching. little things like not highlighting every edge, but those I can actually see when I look above. I know you have several videos on finding where to place layers, so wish me luck layering then glazing to blend. Any tips if the area will have patterns? I have a Seraphon I want to paint similiar to a Sandveld Lizard (lots of spots and stripes)

Nice! In pixel art they call this technique ‘hue shifting’, moving the hue towards yellow and blue slightly when making the base colour lighter and darker. If you want to make things more stylised, you can do some really bold shifts, painting a red object with blue-purple shadows and yellow-orange highlights.

Fun fact: in art a "cool" color is more blue and a "warm" color is more red but a red flame is actually cooler (temperature) than a blue one which is hotter (the opposite).

Hmm, I have got to try this. As it happens, I've been using Vallejo's Deep Sea Blue, which is a fabulous dark blue, to this end as well alongside black on my wet palette of late, and although white and black (well, OK, I tend to use Vallejo Ivory or Bonewhite so my highlights won't be quite so stark) still have a place, this is something I need to try. Thanks as always for the interesting and informative video! But no kitty shenanigans this time?! Did the stars align and the boys behaved while you were filming for once?!

Yeah, it also depends if you're thinking in the classic color wheel (RBY primaries) or the "real color wheel" (CMY primaries). Yellow is directly accross from the 1:1 cyan/magenta mix there. But then also the "yellow" she's using leans heavily orange...

Do you use a stationary light or something to see where the shadows and highlights will be? I have trouble and I'm an amateur canvas painter. But I also need a physical subject because I can't keep the image in my mind. When it's a stationary subject in light, I have no issues shadows and highlights. But painting a mini all my knowledge goes out the window lol. Any suggestions? Only painted about a dozen minis but they all look ok. I compare them to prepainted minis from Nolzur's. If they look close, I count that as a win haha. Great video. So glad I discovered your channel. Thanks for the work you do!!!

Nice. I think colour theory is something more mini painters should think about rather than sticking to the accepted norms. I almost never use pure white on any parts of my minis, even the eyes cause tbh I can’t remember the last time I saw something that was ‘pure’ white unless it was made that way (like paper). #NotificationSquad
