Very happy that I watched this! Only one little thing to make it better. Cut to examples. "Here is what happens if you point your flash right at the subject" CUT TO EXAMPLE and "here is what happens when you bounce it off a wall." CUT TO EXAMPLE New concepts need visual reinforcement. I know you want us to experiment, and we will, but sometimes it would be nice to know what the desired objective is supposed to look like. Minor quibble. Rock on!

I own 3 of the 560s and am trying to get more. LOVE the analog backs, they snuck these digital backs on them while I was in the hospital for a while. The reason is that it's quick and easy to see the amber lights and make adjustments without having to lower the lights. Not so easy from what I hear with newer models and grey/black screens?

Excellent, no-nonsense tutorial. One of the best I've seen on rudimentary Speedlight. One quick question when you find the time: what's your opinion of TTL flash? I've seen so many disparage it but if used with modifiers, diffusers, etc. I don't see it as a problem.

It sounds like you are talking TTL. Given that, when you talk about defeating the sun, are you metering for the subject, or for the scene, etc? Are you letting ttl decide your subject/lighting, then using flash compensation to dial in the look you wanted? Or do you hop your flash over to manual to tweak a shot you have set up with that kiss of light you mentioned you are trying to achieve?

I bought a speedlight 700 10 minutes before a wedding and I felt like I went pro in 5 minutes. I got amazing pictures on a cheap 3100 that impressed the hell out of me...I guess I bought the sigma 18-35 1.8 at the same time but I couldn't have been more happy with my results. (except for full frame) I still found myself pushing the ISO to 400 which I hate to do with the 3100....sigh....

If you want to capture a whole bridge with flash, you might need several flashes. Even more challenging with buildings unless you want to concentrate on a section of a building.
