@@Starclassic25 I'd say that's kind of missing the point of his videos. For the most part they are practical lessons in improving your groove, feel and rudimentary skills. Another way of looking at it, it's cool and all, watching Marco Minneman play a different time with each limb, but to enthusiastic amateurs like myself who want some practical tips on becoming better musicians, Rob Browns' stuff is gold. That's why the dude gets so much love, that and the fact he makes it accessible by not flinging a tonne of chops in your face
@musicmusic65953 жыл бұрын
Yeah we need to go back to the basics of drumming, far too much emphasis on chops and people seeing great drummers on youtube following in that influence. Being a great studio musician is where it is at and learning how to not only hold groves but develop your own phrasing and feels is incredible important fundamentals. You listen to guys like morello and rich in their recordings and they can do it just as well in the studio as they do live, same for guys like cobham, vinnie c etc.
@riverfilms45483 жыл бұрын
@@davidgomersall7185 The thing is Marco Minneman is a great drummer, who has practised these basics long ago, now he puts that time signature thing on top of the "pocket layer". But you have to be able to play in the pocket to make difficult time signatures and grooves sound tasty. Thats the problem I guess.
@davidgomersall71853 жыл бұрын
@@riverfilms4548 Absolutely 100% agree, you don't get to be Marco Minneman through chops alone and you have to know how time works to bend it out of shape and back again. And don't get me wrong, I love watching the virtuoso performances that Drumeo keep bringing us. My point is that, personally, I find Rob Brown's content really practically useful for learning and polishing those fundamental skills. Another couple of decades practice and I MIGHT be able to apply some of Marco Minnemanns lessons.... always good to have ambitions, right?

Saw the name - just had to stop by. This gentleman is definitely needed in the company of Drumeo's stable of Master Teachers. Mr. Brown mentions making good decisions, true, however, I am interested to hear what he explains because I believe he brings ' fresh insight' that comes from experience. He speaks of being solid with simple refined chops. Thru the grace of God in 1966 I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Ike Turner & Ms Tina Turner . . . and the great Mr. Bubba Norwood who described to me the same message as Mr. Brown makes regarding being the engine for the band. At that time I was blessed to be the lead singer and drummer for a 7 piece soul group and the owner. We were the house band for a venue where touring artists performed weekly. I was 15 y/o at that time and Mr. Norwood told me to not be a show-off. "Be a Tasty Drummer " was advice i adhered too. Later my direction changed due to new opportunities as a lead singer though not behind the drums as I ventured into new genres and currently perform classical pieces. Thanks Drumeo for making this presentation!
