A Quest Without controllers.. Good or bad idea?

Baaad idea IMO. Hand tracking is getting better everyday, but still doesn’t hold a candle to tangible controllers when it comes to accuracy and immersion due to the vibrational feedback using haptics. New comers may be turned away if they think this is all VR/MR is.

It would be a bad idea. The worst thing about it is what it would do to VR gaming. It would immediately rip the bottom out of the lowest common denominator game developers have to develop for and confine VR gaming to casual gaming only. Hand tracking will continue to improve, and it will increasingly have its place. But no matter how good it gets, we need something in our hands. Company representatives who make finger guns with their hands and suggest this is how we will play FPS games in the future are terribly misguided. This is how non-gamers imagine gamers would play. I do think, however, that controllers will eventually be replaced by props integrating hand tracking. The user would pick up a physical gun prop, for instance, and use that for an FPS. Such a prop would provide a trigger, maybe some other controls, and haptics, but tracking it would be handled by the headset.

Indeed, hand controllers have feedback and are quick to respond. Especially for FPS. Maybe the Quest 3s/lite could use the original Quest 2 controllers if they are looking for cheaper controller to pair it with in the China market. I suspect Aliexpress is soon going to have a generic version of the Quest 2 controller that works with any Quest out there.

you can already make custome enviornments using sidequest. And in the enviornment options you can change the background areas

iv been playing warzone m (mostly mp not wz) on my q3 since an apk was avalible, but when i swtchrd to v64 ptc, it went from incredible to a seizure inducing laggy experience. hope its fixed

I'm only on v63, but the passthrough is significantly better just recently. Previously I could read my phone, but my TV/Monitor was always blown out, but now it's largely readable.

You can already move in vrchat witnout controllers and it works better than that teleporting with hands thing. But I don’t think there will be controller-less full functionality for a long while.

I hope they fix all the bugs from V63 My mic Audio wont record in my recordings even though I use the option to include it. And my Wifi disconnects/connects every 2 seconds rendering my quest 3 useless.

Controllers should always be available but after using the hand tracking if it was a bit better than id be fine with making the controllers an accessory.

I’m on v64 the passthrough is a definite improvement. I can read screens, and the warp is a lot less noticeable, it’s still there but definitely not as bad as it was.

Hand tracking for not is as horrible and stupid idea as The Metaverse was, for on the paper it sounds good, but in reality you always need to hold your hands In front of you in a unnatural way, and controller contain accelerometers that is used for motion prediction and that is a thing hand tracking can not get, the best use for hand tracking is actually for talking, and I do not talk about hand gestures but about sign language, so a AI translation from sign language to text or AI voice should be made before it being made into a rather crappy controller. The hand tracking being limited to when your hands are in front of you could present a challenge to translate sign language but I do like that as a potential accessibility option. Maybe you could have one hand gestures while the other hand uses the controller to initiate the sign-to-speech and confirms entries.

We don't need augmets. They're nice but not what we need. We need A to be able to place existing 2D apps independently from each other and B have side loaded apps not as second class apps we can't pin and have to open through a separate text-only menu. Alternatively to B, we could just have the full Google Play Store on the Quest. But it looks like that won't work out. I just want to pin any Android app to the dock, open it from there, open more than three aps, and then place them where I want.

OMG! I can actually see stuff on my phone now without the brightness being completely out of whack. Heck, there's even less noise in passthrough and EVEN the passthrough switching animation is finally fixed! This update's great already!

That's all I care about. Even on v62 I've noticed permissions have been locked 🔒. That's why I tried to stay on lower firmware but some of my apps wouldn't work without and OS update. This really sucks.
