Notes about this video: 1. I filmed this video in September 2023. It took me this long to edit it (that’s another story). Since this analysis, I started weight training, which has helped these imbalances by strengthening my core. I hope to visit Ron again in the future to see if I've made improvements. 2. Regarding my right foot pronating, I'm hoping the hip and ankle exercises will improve that. If not, I will find a pair of trainers for running that are designed for pronation, with a wide toe box and a small heel lift. It's proving tricky to find some with that criteria. If you know of any, please let me know.

Laura, I had my gait looked at in a shoe shop and they said I was overpronating with both feet. They recommended Hokka Arahi 5 shoes for me which I got and seemed to be pretty good. I think just a general support shoe should do the trick.

This might prove useful. I'm right handed but left-foot dominant in my cycling (it's my beat foot), and my left calf is a full inch bigger than my right, and my running gait is unneven.

Topo Athletic have wonderfully wide toe boxes and I've used their shoes for years. I would recommend perusing their lineup for you ideal levels of cushion/heel to toe drop, but the Ultrafly 5's are may be a start based on your criteria.

Hi Laura, not sure if you'll see this in the sea of comments but I highly recommend you research postural restoration (PRI). It focuses heavily on the connections between the jaw and pelvis and how they affect one another and the whole kinetic chain. Neal Hallinan and Conor Harris here on KZbin are fantastic resources for it. Essentially the PRI approach recognizes that imbalances in the body stem from compensations made by the nervous system as a reaction to various insults from stress and/or trauma (often oral trauma such as orthodontic work, but many other stressors can put the nervous system on high alert). As a result, incorrect muscles come into play while the correct ones weaken, and this can cause unnatural strains as muscles end up being asked to do things they're not designed to do. Postural restoration therapy focuses on resetting the nervous system with proprioceptive cues, precise bodily positioning, and deep breathing. Once the neural patterns are corrected, then the strength training begins to reinforce those under-utilized muscles. One problem with traditional physical therapy and strength training such as the McGill Big 3, which is frequently used to smooth imbalances, is that they do not address underlying causes. Your body doesn't just randomly decide to stop working properly. Your muscles don't just stop firing in the correct pattern for no reason. Imbalances in the body are not a deficiency of doing specific workout routines, similarly to how chronic headaches are not an ibuprofen deficiency. And similarly, traditional physical therapy is often more of a bandage than a permanent solution. Strengthening the weak muscles is good, but if the body still struggles to turn them on at the right times, the moment you stop doing strength work, you will regress back to pain. Postural restoration fills in the missing component, which is setting the neural circuitry right so that your body actually knows when to fire the right muscles. Therefore, in everything you do, those muscles will be maintained to the degree necessary to do the task, without the need for constant strength training to ward off imbalance and pain. Not to say you shouldn't strength train, because you should, but there's a difference between training to be stronger and training because if you don't, your body will hurt. And fwiw, I'm not just shilling this randomly. PRI therapy fixed my jaw and pelvis so that I could run without pain after multiple rounds of traditional PT, acupuncture, massage, electro stim, and all sorts of other failed treatments. It literally changed my life ❤

Fascinating how such "minor" imbalances tend to accumulate in other parts of the body. It would be so cool to find a similar analysis here in Northern Minnesota because I have a bum right hip that seems to affect everything else! I think you're 70, 80, and 90 year old selves are lucky to have such a dedicated steward. On another note, I stopped having a daily glass of wine as of July 5th. I decided to do this for my older self as well. It really stunk for v the first 2 months, but I feel better now. As always, GREAT video full of meaningful content and inspiration!!!

Rewards for stress with an addictive habit. Yikes, not liking that!!! So onward, I go attempting to heal my brain for the future me...I know you get that! Thanks for listening! ☺️

Super awesome✨ so glad places, and professions like this exist so they can help figure out our movement patterns. I’m glad they were able to help you, and I’m glad you are willing to share this. I had a thought, I know you said in one of your lives that you weren’t going to try to get a middle split, but I really feel that if you built the hip, leg, knee, ankle, foot and toe muscles to master the middle splits, that it could help adjust everything that needs it in your body. Just something to consider. Once again, thanks for sharing ❤❤❤

Would love to go to this clinic. As I know I have uneven hips (had hip displasia as a baby) and one hip is extremely loose, the other is very tight. I have a bit of scoliosis as well which I think is expected with uneven hips (and therefore an aggravated disk on one side, not serious but can be very painful). I saw a standard podiatrist and it was very basic, they said I walk opposite to how my shoes get worn 🤔 I find that standing on my toes on the edge of a step and standing up and down slowly, really seems to help keep a healthy arch and fascia. Interesting he recommended you wear larger shoes because the past year I wear shoes a size larger! Just because they’re more comfortable.

There may also be a huge difference between running fresh and an hour into a run, as some muscles and tendons fatigue. You tend to injure yourself in the second half of a workout as you get more and more instable and out of alignment. Active and EARLY knee and foot lift is IMO crucial. When you're tired, that'll slip away from you and impacts will get harder, ground contact longer, strain on calf mucles changes and you make even use them in a different way.

That was really interesting. I love anything to do with how the body works. I used to have plantar fasciitis and know how really painful it can be so much so that i could barely walk in the mornings after getting up. My job involves me being on my feet all day and i discovered Asics trainers because my left foot was leaning in but it was my right foot that had PF. After wearing these trainers that corrected my arches the PF immediately disappeared and have never had it again. That was a good 10 years ago. I find I cannot wear flat sandals or shoes and the brand i wear are Vionic. I literally live in my Asics trainers. But the video was so interesting.

Interesting video that shows that highlights that even experienced athletes that are trying to do everything "right" can still have unrecognised issues. I can see that the barefoot shoes have you running more forefoot with a shorter gait - that reduces heel strike and related issues. And the shoes also corrected foot shape (although you've indicated that a toe spacer may be needed to help eliminate that bunion on the right foot) So feet are good - but that clicky hip was throwing a lot out, alongside the ankle. As soon as you mentioned that the left glute medius and minor were not firing as strongly as the right - my brain went immediately to the McGill Big 3 :) Will be interesting to see the follow up. By the way - at 7:40 - those Delts! The weight training is showing results.

i noticed starting at around 12 mins the doctor pointed out information on his computer screen. my doctor did the same thing during my last visit at the VA. here's the problem, they assume because the screen is facing them and they can see it clearly, that you to can see it clearly, and of course that is not true. they need to turn the monitor in front of you so you can see it, or have a second monitor in front of you, or have a large screen monitor on the wall. I didn't say anything to my VA doctor at the time, but it's amazing to me that people can be so blind to another person's point of view.

ok at 13:24 you talk about your left foot turning in but not your right foot because you can see the side of your left foot big toe. BUT it's pretty clear to me the camera is not perfectly centered and is more behind your right leg which means of course you can see your left big toe more from that angle. your toes may be fine after all :)

Podiatrists are obsessed with pronation. A short regime of barefoot running can strengthen the feet hugely and eliminate collapse of arches and ankles. The solution is NEVER a new show or insole, it's learning to run like a human. We we BUILT to run and can cover more ground in 24 hrs than most any ground animal. Because of how we're built. With modern trainers on, the body will NOT just run like we were designed to. And going away from that design causes problems.

I don't know if you are being followed psychologically but it is imperative. If I may, you too should be interested in psychonutrition (on this subject I recommend the videos of Dr. Guillaume Fond, he is great). What could interest the viewer is your life as you do with your videos but on your healing journey to get better with the different stages and why not a book on your journey from homeless to a stabilized life. You have everything going for you, creative, beautiful, authentic, intelligent, resourceful, fighter. There is just this damn disease of emotions that handicaps you but by asking the right people for help you can get through it. Ps: I know what I'm talking about, I suffer from the same illness. Courage my dear, you will get through it

I don't trust self-declared (especially diploma wielding) experts where it comes to running technique. The last revalidation physio said I was done with sports and perhaps walking at all. I trained myself to strong running times in a very short time, just by watching my gait and getting rid of intrusive footwear. Running is a two-set dance. No need to autopilot through those two steps until you've got them DOWN. Learn running from world record holders. You can't run a WR when you make a mess of your gait. You'll see WR holders at all distances walk about the same. Some over-rotate shoulders. This might give them speed, but can't be better.
