I got 10,000 steps nearly every day. Even when I drive to work. Because I’m always on my feet at work. The only time I don’t get 10,000 steps. Is when I go cycling. sometimes it picks up cycling as steps but it doesn’t get as many. But it doesn’t really matter because cycling is good if not better than walking. Just because you’re not getting steps doesn’t mean you’re not healthy and not exercising. It’s just general movement. That’s the key

I've been walking for years now. Switched for the gym for a while and then the pandemic hit and the gyms closed - back to walking again out of necessity. I'd walk 10k steps a day for a while but soon enough it just wasn't a challenge anymore, so doubled it, and then some more. Today I can walk 40k steps without even feeling tired. I've never been fitter, not even after going to the gym for a decade, my glutes have miraculously grown, I feel strong and I am strong. Walking is the best exercise you can do if you have the time but don't like the gym, or aren't particularly fit - it's easy and free, and honestly - gives amazing results, and you do it to some extent anyway. Not to mention the mental health benefits and the sightseeing opportunities haha. I am back to the gym now because I can increase the intensity without needing much time, but still go for walks whenever I can - it soothes me and my body loves it

40 thousand? That must be close to 20 MILES. If you walk at four miles per hour pace - which is a fair clip - that is around FIVE HOURS walking. Wow. Rather you than me, as they say. I think I'll take the bus. The walk to the bus stop is enough for me!!

The problem is time. Not a chance I can fit 40k steps in when 10k is already a major issue time-wise. Cool if you're got literally no responsibilities or a treadmill under your fulltime job's desk, but I simply can't. I'd love to though, as it's great to lose weight, but I can't.

I do a 3 mile fast walk every morning with my dog. Yes, it's almost an hour out of my day, but it always makes me feel good to come home, have my morning beverage and enjoy the peace and quiet before the day really starts. And I don't have to worry about getting to my 10k steps, I'm active enough the rest of the day to get there. It has made me appreciate mornings so much, especially during this beautiful time of year.

Love it. I get up every day and knock out five miles in 90 minutes. It’s something I’ve been doing since the beginning of the pandemic, and now I just can’t even imagine a day when I don’t start out walking at least 5 miles. It clears my head, lets me select music for my classes, and it’s peaceful. No gardeners, no dogs barking, no phones ringing. It’s my time. Then I rehearse two classes (another 90 minutes) immediately after my walk. I know it sucks getting up early in the morning, but once it’s a habit you can never do without it! Thanks for the video! I’ll be thinking about you tomorrow when I’m on my walk!

Great to hear about your experiences! I've been aiming for the 10,000 steps a day for years now. My longest streak was 446 days, I then missed by ten or fifteen, which was really annoying. I keep restarting, because the benefits are there, even if I miss a day. There are so many walks that I wouldn't have taken without the 10,000 steps! Though I get a lot of steps during the day, I sometimes have to walk around the house to make up a few hundred, or even run on the spot! Still better than sitting on the sofa.

As many commenters are saying it can be burdensome. I set myself a goal of 10,000 steps for month. One time after a busy day, and work drinks, I found myself running around the block before midnight in order to get the steps in! But the challenge was an eye opener for me re. the cumulative effect of many small choices. E.g. taking the steps instead of the lift, parking the car further away, walking to the shops, it all adds up. Visa-versa, sitting in your home office all day gets you very few steps indeed. Keep moving people!

@@jamiepike6909 - Totally agree you don't always have to go outside to get your step count up. Check out "Grow with Jo" on KZbin, she does the most fun walking videos and also does partytime videos and she is a brilliant motivator as her 'walkouts' are so much fun to do, like working out with a buddy. Another way is to get a mini trampoline/rebounder. The bungee cord ones are best as they are silent so no squeaking springs. If you are working from home you can set a timer and get up every hour or whatever you decide and do 5 minutes exercise. I put on a favourite song and just bounce along to it as it's so much fun to do. Mines in the kitchen so when I stick the kettle on I have a bounce while I'm waiting for it to boil or if I feel a bit cold I do a quick 5 minutes to warm up as I'm trying not to put the heating on all day with just me at home. Rebounding is easy on your joints and is particularly good for us ladies as it helps to prevent osteoporosis by encouraging calcium production. It's also a good cardio workout, 5 minutes on it and you know you are alive. Another way is to get a ropeless skipping rope. They have counters on them and do feel like the real thing and the beauty is you can skip inside and not knock things over. You can easily build in short 5 minute bursts of activity throughout your day rather than trying to get 10K steps in all at once if you vary what you're doing. That way you don't get bored.

I am a carpenter, I’m on my feet, walking back and forth, climbing, crawling and always carrying something. When I cannot set up my equipment close to my work area I do get a kick out of seeing how many steps I’ve done and how many floors I’ve climbed. It helps when I’m puzzled as to why the job has taken longer than I anticipated, oh ya, I spent 2-3hrs just walking. Despite all that I still love a long walk. Glad to see Charlie is still hanging out with you, black cats are the best.

Looking good, Laura Try! Great video. We walk here but never counted steps. I've always walked, never got by driver's license until late teens- a rarity in rural Canada where driving is a must. I walked. I only realize now- I just calculated- if I walked earlier thaodn the school bus back then-which I did occasionally- four miles- that was nearly 10,000 steps! That kid back then was insane! I walk less now, but I do enjoy a good walk. (After a mishap a couple of years ago, I had to learn to walk all over again! Who knew? It can happen.) I agree with your video comment it does take time for daily long walks and hikes. I also liked the good information on how many steps until diminishing returns. It is hard to get out sometimes, but I agree, once you're out there's a lot of rewards. Thank you for uploading.

I thought this would be the result, given what you currently do. I’m lucky I have active dogs so I easily do 14000 steps a day, without running or other exercise. Something I’d suggest as well your first daylight walk, which as you know is super important for our circadian rhythm - get a walk in around midday - even if it’s 10 mins that’s half a mile. You get maximum sunlight for downloading at that time too (Vit D). Then your evening walk doesn’t need to be as long to get your steps in, and doing it around 5-6pm means you’ve the rest of your evening to relax 😊

And since this year there is a new challenge, 100k steps (approx. 60km) in one day. I've done that once now and would like to do it twice a year and maybe get to 100km at some point.

I have really strived to keep 10K steps a day as a baseline and I have found that it has been really supportive. Sometimes I have found it (mostly) effortless - like when I was commuting on bus/foot to work, and when the weather has been nice I was keeping above 10K a day about 80% of days. But in deep of winter, during full-remote work times, and other disturbances like illness, it has been challenging. Occasioanlly when I have been ill I have gone out and turned back because I was too sick, but I have never regretted going for a walk. I have found that walking is so great for my overall physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual health, as well as creativity. Love your videos! Thanks for sharing these. I have been inspired by your videos on fasting and IF, and I have already lost 5.5 KG of fat.

Thanks for the video. I started working from home at the start of COVID (like most people in the world I guess) and to avoid depression and lack of exercise, I always start my day going on a 10k steps walk in the morning. Going to a coffee shop to read, study or just to a supermarket a bit further away then my usual one. On days off, I usually get between 30k-50k steps as I love walking to discover new places or just go trail running. The benefits for my mental health and to set up a good mood for the day were quickly visible. I also try to exercise everyday apart from that morning walk to get a bit more variety.

I’ve been wanting for this one! I totally understand step anxiety , I forgot my Fitbit today and was so upset! I did 85 days with 10k steps a day EVERYDAY but the step anxiety started to decrease the benefits for me after a while. Now I’ve been walking just one mile a day minimum everyday for the last 20 days and occasionally getting to 10k only if I’m close through daily rhythm so I don’t upset myself. Overall, I loved getting in my steps, it helped me wake up earlier and improved my sleep bc it makes you sooo tired if you aren’t used to much movement. I would definitely do it again I think 26 days is the perfect amount of time to get in the groove and it’s so cool seeing you do a challenge that I was doing too (I started mine a few weeks before first you posted about it!) thank you for sharing, have a great day!

This is so cool that you did this. A few years back I also challenged myself to do 10000/day and figured out just how long it takes as well as the number of miles it covered for my stride. But I have to admit i too began to ‘stress’ a bit about achieving that daily, and actually it was a tad painful for my feet by the end of it. Part of that might be shoes but part of it was also that I would try to do all 10k in one go. Anything extra for the day was just extra. I really appreciate learning that the 10k number is based on marketing and not ‘science’. Thank you for that and for sharing your challenge. I found myself nodding a LOT along with you and laughing because I remember it so well. All that said, you’ve inspired me to get outside this beautiful California morning and get some light. Cheers 🥂

Guess I'm lucky that I choose to do my workouts outside first thing in the morning, plus that extra bit of light in Winter (I think) helps ward off the SADs (Seasonal Affective Disorder) re: fitting in the 10K steps vs your usual workout(s), there is an early study where they had a look at what areas of the brain were affected/stimulated during exercise. They seemed to indicate that low-intensity exercise activated brain regions involved on cognition and attention whereas high-intensity activated emotion/mood regions. Early stage, small sample - but interesting. So going for a walk may help you with with getting that video edited, but high intensity may help to keep my mood balanced. No word on Tabata and whether that style does both. And yes - the step anxiety is real - working from home a lot over the last few years really drops the step count.

At work we did a 10000 steps for 100 days to get 1million steps. I found it really hard. I loved the lunch walks but hated having to walk again when I got home or walk around in my living room. I have long legs so I have to cover a big distance. I wasn’t first to a million but once I’d done mine, I’d walked miles further than everyone else in the challenge. Now I settle for a lunch walk and whatever else I get naturally from exercise and wandering about the house. Less stressful but still getting out.

Hi LT May be if you spend a long time on your laptop.... set an alarm to get you off your laptop every hour, so you can rest your eyes and pop out and walk a mile and get all the benefits during the day.... Or you could run 8 miles and hey presto.... 10,000 steps

When I heard you were doing this challenge I upped my target steps from 8,000 to 10,000. But I wasn't making change a real priority. In May I got to the target about half the time. For June I'll target 3/4 of the days to meet the target. Thank you for your inspiration!

I was a postman for over 30 years so I've had a belly full of walking! I dread to think how many steps I clocked up over those years. If I decided to attempt 10,000 steps a day, I would definitely do it during the summer months and likely spread it across the day, morning, afternoon, then evening.

I really enjoy the 10k step challenge. I think I've been doing it for about five years. I started this a couple of years after my last dog died. When I had a dog I walked it rain or shine twice a day so maybe I've done 10k steps for 40 years?? I don't know. But with no dog i needed a motivator. I am in a virtual group linked by Fitbit called the workweek hustle which helps me get my steps done during the week. And if I don't win (which is most weeks!) I take joy in others winning. It's mutual support.

Have gone through this about 3 times in the last 5 years. The most successful was during the first lockdown 2 years ago, lost a lot of weight too on account of not eating breakfast till after the 5 mile walk at about 1pm (less calories per day) Every few days rode the bike for a couple of hours instead to break the monotony. The big down side to it is/was the repetitive scenery around where we live, once you have seen every street and walking track 50 or more times, it becomes a real chore. Do much better on holiday where we walk at least 3 hours a day absorbing the new scenery.

It makes it so much easier, if you get into the habit of just getting up and moving around, throughout the day. Just 10 minutes can be about 1000 steps, depending on your stride. One big walk is a lot, but broken up into movement over the course of the day (which is basically the purpose, to get moving and all the benefits of it) is much easier, and honestly, we should be getting up and moving around anyway. 😊

10k steps a day is not easy. That is probably around 6 miles for me. If someone walks that much a day that is about 2 hours of walking. Not many have that much time to commit to something like this. I ran 2350 miles in 2020 and I averaged about 10k a day. It's a lot. 10k steps a day is not something to shoot for. Much better eating healthy at a deficit or at BMR and making small changes by committing to just moving more. Anything really, yard work. walking to the grocery store, vacuuming, walking up and down the stairs at home. 20 minutes of extra movement a day. As a society yes we might eat more these days but we move, just move so much less than we did 10,20,30 years ago. It's not our metabolisms that slow down that much, it's just up that do.

You're definitely right, that for dog owners this challenge is much easier (20 years of experience) :-))) But for me, the challenge will start in 4-6 weeks and I'll celebrate a single step! I'm curious when I'd be able to hit 10 000 :-) The first milestone for me is 1000 steps in a row - that is a WALK! And the next one (very important) are 3000 - then I'm confident to take my dog back from my parents 🙂 (to put it in context....3 knee surgeries since September, most of the time on crutches). And besides my dog, I can't wait to be able to "go out", to the forest, away from work and computer - every single day.
