Improving TF2's Voice Commands

The voice command system in Team Fortress 2 is something we all use but never really think much of. Why should we? We've got bigger issues... like the muting of free-to-play accounts and the bots that continue to roam servers. Even then, TF2's voice commands are completely functional as is. But... like most other things, there's always room for improvement, which is what I'm aiming for within this video.

Fun Fact: In the early days of TF2 people would use the "Sentry Ahead" line to let people know snipers were ahead since it was more useful against snipers than sentries
@sn0ipe333
@sn0ipe333 Жыл бұрын
Not that I don’t doubt this claim, but where did you hear it from? The specific time period where players would have deemed a sniper more worth calling out than a sentry doesn’t really match up. Sniper was never considered a particularly strong class until later into the game’s development where classes became more fleshed out. Early sniper was pretty much balanced simply because many players were playing on crappy hardware.
@walter1383

I do that today while playing. It's a hell of a lot easier than typing out sniper when unable to voice chat and gets the message of a dangerous sightline across easy enough to any player with half a brain.

For the extraneous voice lines in need of replacing, I feel like the Cheers and Positive lines could be easily smashed together into the same category, as could the Jeers and Negative ones. I genuinely can't tell the difference between them in terms of intent, since they both seem to fall under the same 'grousing about your team/the current state of the game' category. I also have to say that the 'Move Up!' and 'Go! Go! Go!' commands don't really seem like they need to be separate, either. Especially if a third rallying command like 'Ready!' is added. Move Up! seems to be specifically for Engineers, which your team might not even have any of. It seems somewhat unnecessary. On the other hand, I disagree with the removal of the 'Go Left' and 'Go Right' lines. I haven't needed to use them as much as some of the others, but if you're on a map with a lot of different routes, or you're escorting a Medic or some newie who doesn't know where they're going, it's easy to lead them safely with those commands. A niche use, yeah, but it's also one of the few that's legitimately useful for your teammates, as opposed to basically just being there for flavor like the 'Thanks,' 'Good Job,' and Battle Cry commands. With that being said, perhaps they could be replaced by a 'Follow Me!' command that combines their functions.

An alternative to the 1-9 menu is to give us a "radial" menu like the buy menu in CS:GO, It basically gives you more voice commands to use, makes your finger stretch less and is friendlier for controllers. Just hold down Z, X, C, and hover over with your mouse to say the voice line. The only downside is it locks your view while using it, but depending on how fast you are with your mouse movements, this won't be that much of an issue. As for additional voice commands, I think "Hello!", "Goodbye", "Laugh", "Retreat!", "Insult", "Defend!", and "OK" would be pretty useful

The "Ubercharge Ready" command specific to Medic could be a class-sensitive command that changes according to which class you're using. Like it changing to "I'm low on metal!" for Engineer or maybe "I'm going ahead!" for Scout. In addition, I feel like the "I'm low on ammo!" command should have been a staple command since the beginning.

I actually have my Mouse 4 button bound specifically for the "Sentry ahead!" command and basically use it as the suggested "Careful" command because I've found that whether there's actually a sentry ahead or not, people will be more vigilant of what's ahead if they hear that command.

The help being replaced with pass to me could actually be done by looking at ally with the flag and tapping help, like you do it with calling out spies. It would not interfere with original help at all and will allow you to cram one more command there

I love voice lines! I remember being a new player and spamming them, but then I got self concious about filling the chat. Later, I saw a youtube video that mentioned masking uber, and figured that'd be a solid excuse to spam them! I really like your ideas, only change I'd make is turning those first 3 into a general "Watch Out" command. People already use the Sentry Ahead voiceline for that, and it works pretty well! Then you'd only have to remove the pass to me command

I think the best idea would to actually let people rebind/reorganize the existing menus alongside your new additions. People create new vscript menus all the time with servers, can't be that hard to ask the client to make one.

CS:GO has a "Loadout" section of the Inventory where you can swap out certain guns with alternative ones or with skins you have. Something similar could be implemented for voice lines where the user has full control over the order of the voicelines (say you main Medic and having Medic-related voicelines more accessible would make your life a little easier).

I think the "careful" voiceline is already synonymous with "incoming" as a means of giving people a heads up. I would also suggest an "[enemy] 's low" line as a means to tell teammates that an enemy is at low health (kind of like pointing at someone that's a spy), and even if they're not it could encourage pushes (or troll teammates).

It is possible to increase the amount of voice lines with the 3 two-button combination by going the Stardew route and add voice for pressing the 0, -, and =. They don't do anything by default. Which brings the the amount of voice commands from 26 because C+9 doesn't do anything to 36. Fun fact: there are 10 weapon categories but the 7 to 0 ones go unused despite the code for it existing according to the wiki

On the topic of not wanted to stretch to hit the 6+ keys, I think you should be able to use the scroll wheel to, y’know, scroll through the menu, then press down on the scroll wheel to select what you want. Also could work for disguising as spy. To the issue of weapon switching, just as long as you have the menu open, you don't change weapons. I think it should also be able to be turned off in settings.

I think what you're looking for is a Left 4 Dead 2 vocalizer, but in Team Fortress 2. I've been playing a ton of Left 4 Dead 2 recently with a vocalizer mod, and I'm just overwhelmed by how many different voice lines there are. Callouts for every special infected, all in one menu. Things like "be careful," "follow me," "stick close," they're all really great ways to communicate if you don't have (or feel like using) a mic. I think that if you could literally take Ion's Vocalizer (the mod I use) and port it to TF2 with some modifications for different content (i.e. special infected -> mercenaries), it would be perfect. That being said, I have 16 keys bound to menus of 9 different voicelines each (and that's just the ones that work in official servers), and that's a lot to memorize. Maybe we could have something a little more stripped-down for TF2. In addition (and finally), it's worth noting that the L4D2 vocalizers are radial menus that require you to hold down the button (in this case, Z, X, and C), move your mouse in the direction of the voice line you want to use, and let go of the button (or click). This takes away your ability to look around, shoot, and shove (or alt-fire in TF2), if only for a second. At higher-level play, I doubt this would matter much given that players would likely do it so fast, it wouldn't take more than a few frames. But it would definitely introduce a steeper learning curve. That's my take on this concept. Would be interested to hear others' thoughts.

People forget the usefulness of key modifier binds, something not natively available in source, but you can write some sophisticated scripts with aliases and binds to have multiple commands on the same key with a modifier. I use the SHIFT key for that, e.g. i can press E for "Medic!" and SHIFT+E for "Activate Charge!" (or "Ubercharge ready" if i am Medic).

As other people have said, there already exist voicelines that could be used for "Sniper ahead". From my own experience not many people seem to know or care about some commands as people don't seem to realize when I use "Hit the uber charge" as medic that I wanna uber whoever I'm healing. I would also love the addition of user defined time limit to voicecommands, as I hate the cooldown and would love if saying "pootis" was easier (or other voicecommand shenanigans)

There's already a hotkey for calling to pass the jack in PASS Time, it's +attack3 which defaults to the scroll wheel button (press the scroll wheel down instead of scrolling). This makes the manual "pass to me" voice command redundant. Don't diss Pass Time, it's fun when I find a server with it once a year or so... I don't remember where I read it, but Valve basically had to abandon Pass Time as a game mode because it was made by Bad Robot and they no longer have a contract for further development. That's why no new Pass Time maps have ever been added, either from Valve or from the community. Really sucks because when I found out, I had already been in the middle of designing a cool new Halloween map for it. Pass Time and arena are the truly dead parts of TF2.

I remember i bound every key surrounding my movement keys to certain voice comms like 5 years ago. I even had a little sticky note with squares drawn on it stuck to the bottom left corner of my monitor to remind myself of which keys said what. 5 years and several laptops/PCs later, whenever I install TF2 on a new system those voice comms are still there. I've checked my configs and the autoexec file isn't even cloud saved, but somehow stream remembers. Idk how, but honestly it's really nice not to ever have to script them again.

Honestly the only command I felt like was lacking is "Behind you!" Yes, you can spam Spy! for that but it doesn't really work especially cuz people instinctively start spy checking instead of expecting Medic and his Pocket to be flanking and stuff Or they just may think you're goofing since Spy! is somewhat of a local meme in TF2 community I find it hard to keep people's attention on their back but other than that I think the current voice lines are fine and nice

Honestly a modern update would be a scroll wheel for voice commands like in many modern games. Can implement the same scroll wheel interface for both taunts and spy disguise kit as well. Even better is if you can customize your scroll wheel and add or remove which command you want in whichever orientation of the wheel to fit your preferences.

One idea I've had for a while would be to include speech bubbles for the "place building here" commands when you're playing engineer, similar to how medic players can see speech bubbles above teammates' heads when they call for medic. Something like a stylized version of the building above a downward arrow. It'd make it a lot more obvious for new players when a more experienced teammate is trying to give them advice, especially if they're building far enough away from a good spot they might not hear the voice line but could see the speech bubble.
