Parenting a child with ADHD can bring special challenges, but with the right support parents can overcome these and ensure their children reach their full potential.This seminar will describe the content of the evidence-based Parents Plus ADHD programme which is a parenting course run over 6 to 12 weeks that helps parents
- Understand the challenges and strengths of ADHD
- Manage behaviour and emotional problems
- Build their children’s self-esteem and confidence
- Reduce their own stress as parents
- Understand the role of medication and other treatments
- Manage homework and education challenges
- Help their child talk about and understand ADHD
- Support children’s friendships
The course was developed by the Parents Plus Charity in Ireland in collaboration with families and ADHD Ireland and is designed to be delivered by trained professionals.
Speaker:
Prof John Sharry is a social worker and family psychotherapist with over 30 years experience as a child and adolescent mental health professional. He is founder and clinical director of the Parents Plus Charity adjunct Professor at the School of Psychology in UCD and an Irish Times Parenting Columnist. He is the author of over 25 positive psychology, parenting books and mental health programmes and co-author of the evidence-based Parents Plus ADHD Children’s Programme which is successfully run through mental health, disability, primary care and community services in Ireland and the UK.
