This is so encouraging to watch. I have a little 5 year old OTTB that I purchased in December. She’s very similar to your Mowgley - has a hard time turning, the sewing machine trot, a bit of an attitude when being asked to work, dislikes her mouth being touched … but she is an absolute sweetheart, otherwise. She’s gorgeous, tries to please, and kind on the ground. I’ve had a couple of “experienced” horse folk who are typical naysayers - they tell me she will never be a dressage horse, her trot is too choppy, she’s not a good worker, just make her a brood mare or retire her already. But, she’s just started her training and I feel like she has so much potential to learn and grow. I’m not in a hurry and find it discouraging that people don’t have the patience to work with a young thoroughbred who is learning a whole new way of moving. I love watching Mowgley’s progress, and seeing how much you love him and are patient with his journey. It gives me hope that my girl will get there one day. ❤️

Seeing Mowgley progress so well gives me hope for the OTTB mare I’m riding now. We’re still working on rhythm- for me! She’s so tall and long legged I really have to change my posting rhythm. She’s very sweet but so curious and amazed by all the sounds in the arena, she has trouble concentrating. So my trainer is saying UP/DOWN/UP/DOWN and I’m counting 1,2,3,4 as I post, trying to learn her rhythm. It felt so weird! We also like to do the “end on a good note”. It’s great to hear reinforcement that I’m doing things right, and that tiny bits of progress are worth lots of praise.

I just recently participated in my first trail ride in over 10 years and I was so nervous. You are absolutely right that we have to stay in our comfort level. I walked my horse at the beginning because I knew I would be a nervous wreck and not pick if I rode. Once I was able to calm down and see that my guy was unfazed, I jumped on and had the best experience ever. I am so thankful to my group for allowing me to push my boundaries in my own way without pushing me to just ride it out. Having a buddy horse you can use as a physical barrier is also great.

Lovely to be able to go back & reflect on the important training strategies that lead to a breakthrough! I really love that Alicia is so encouraging with Mowgley, considerate of wanting to avoid excessive pressure, sets a goal, yet helps him to find his way. Instead of bull-dozing through his limitations & creating a huge amount of stress! I can see how the approach to training has progressed from the earlier YRS videos with the young horses years & years ago, which were alot more dogmatic in the training!! Very interesting!! Thankyou again Alicia for your mindful approach. 🐴🐴🐴❤❤🙏

A little bit neurotic and doesn't want to work sums me up as well Mowgley. I love watching your videos with him. Sure he's never going to Grand Prix but for most of us with our "normal" horses and all their faults, he is very inspiring. I love thoroughbreds and all their crazy, you can totally tell he loves and trusts you guys. He's come so far for just a baby. I have a bad habit of if a horse finally does something hard of getting excited and wanting to do it again and again to make sure they've "got it" and I've learned that is not something I should be doing. I've learned when you end is important to training too.

I didn't know that young horses stuggle with their balance sometimes! Letting him go where he feels comfortable is a great advice and it means that you respect the horse. And this results to a steadier contact, which is important in all equine sports. I have a greenie OTTB and sometimes it can be tempting to ask for just one more transition or one more exercise. Firstly fantastic to see you both back Alicia & Mowgli, with such passion - is invigorating! Wonderful video, thankyou! Greatest nugget herein: using the specific dressage moves, to facilitate the horse achieving better balance, rhythm, connection, & overall better fluidity. Demonstrating how the initial difficulties manifest differently as the horse progresses & how to address them & work through it, in the step by step guide, is incredibly helpful! Very relevant to me & my horse at our current level! Love to see this ❤ Re the DMA snippet - excellent advice: be sensible, think about the surfaces - so beneficial! He’s coming along so well! I’m surprised to learn that you teach and ask for travers so early on in the training. I guess I figured that this would be a movement for a more broke horse! Shows how much I know! Coming from a Jumper rider who has never asked for a travers (and didn’t know what it was until recently)!
@Flying0Dismount2 жыл бұрын
It is never too early to train all of the lateral movements. Lateral builds top line and suppleness. The key is that you're not training the travers for hours on end and asking for extreme flexion and bend but only what the horse is comfortable with at their level of training, and only in short periods as part of a greater program of training...

This is so great to see how you train the horse. This also reminded me on two things one of my teacher taught me: 1) Always make the correction on the front legs (by bringing in the shoulders, not pushing the hind legs out) and 2) Always remember to stop on a good moment, early enough. Helping the horse to understand travers has been a huge issue for me. I think I will now remember to use a circle to make it easier for her.

So great to see Mowgley again. He looks so good! I love the way you used travers to assist with his paces and suppleness. Well done! 🐴❤🐴

I have become interested in adopting an ottb eventually but they are definitely a project and I’m no horse trainer. The Mowgley videos have been very informative. I love how you cheer every small win. It’s a very important thing to remember to do for oneself too as a learner .

he's come on so well, and it is so nice that you have taken us on the journey with you. I really appreciate the way you explain how to get the bigger steps and more freedom in the body. This is something I have been working on with the horse I ride so this is so helpful thank you.

Thnak you so much, Alicia! It's great to see how lovely Mowgley is, and how sweet you are with him! My girl is only 4 as well, she's a baby with a hot temper! As usual, this video was so inspiring - the importance of "success, than one more thing and let go", not overworking, building a bond - valuable piece of information! thanks once again.😀 Kisses from Portugal 😘

this video was very informative. I love how you take things slow for mowgly but also enough that he is learning quickly.

I love how you mentioned rewarding your horse and motivating keeping them motivated. I ride an OTTB mare that is very unmotivated and doesn't enjoy people (to be honest I don't blame her, she wasn't born to be a lesson horse). Sometimes I even feel a bit bad for taking her out of the pasture, even though I'm trying to be super positive during the training and rewarding her whenever she's trying to please me. She's a bit like a horse version of me, maybe that's why I like her so much :)

So helpful - I have an OTTB that could barely go to the right, and you are so correct that the difficulty is still there but just is expressed differently as they progress.

Loved the hard part, sees the improvement and break with token canter to help the submission. Something soooo overlooked. Really fab to watch!

My biggest learning was enlarging the stride & doing leg yield on the circle to improve his way of going.

Didn't know this trick with using the traverse on a circle to make the trot more fluent. Can't wait to try that out! 😀

Love the clarification between when to ask for one more thing and when to just take the tiny wins. It’s too easy sometimes to take situational advice as a blanket statement, so I appreciate that you specified the reward method from the very beginning vs now adapting with his progress. Thanks for another great video!

It’s so good for me to see the training in real time. To see his little signs of discomfort and fighting it, but him pushing through and you rewarding him and giving those incentives. I so often ride school horses for my own learning with these things and I love seeing you work through some horse behavior and psychology as a trainer. I think seeing that real time will actually give me a confidence boost in my own learning as well. Amazing video, as always. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
