Rolex Sports Car Series: 2001 Watkins Glen

Ahead of the 2018 Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen at Watkins Glen International on June 28 - July 1, we go back to when the Rolex Sports Car Series battled for six hours at the historic track in 2001. With several of the same faces still competing 17 years later, fans will want to tune in to watch on Sunday, July 1 at 9:30 a.m. ET. The race will be televised live flag-to-flag on FS1.

@@natef4240 Yes, I do remember that race well. There were lots of factors involved in that Porsche GT win and BMW Z4 GT placing second overall - loads of rain and accidents, and safety car/pit stop timing and mechanical grip of the Porsche versus the prototype cars (and the other GT cars). Plus, wasn't it cut short also? The fastest race lap by the Porsche was less than 1/2 a second slower than the fastest prototype lap.

What were the differences between the GrandAm and the Alms version of the BMW M3 GT?

My guess would be that it was similar to today's gt3 vs gt4. Difference in HP, weight and aero. Or just different graded drivers. Pros in the GrandAm and lesser graded (bronze, or silver grade) in the Ams. Maybe. Haha
