In today's video I wanted to share with you how I am finding the Canon 5D Mark IV after almost 6 months since I purchased it in early April. I go over what I do and don't like about the camera, the glass I'm using and what I think of the camera. Will this be a camera I will keep on for many more years to come? I think so as there's little need to improve on it, the camera as a tool works really well for me.

@@SimonPhillipsPhoto Try adjusting it by sliding it out a little from the side of the camera. I have one on my 5DSR and that's what I had to do to get to my HDMI port. I sometimes use a field monitor on the cam just for stills photography and it really helps these tired old eyes of mine. Larger screen and tilting too. The other features like zebras and focus peaking work well on it too. Basically turns a dslr into a mirrorles as close as possible but truthfully I seldom use those features, just like the larger (5") screen and tilting ability.

I am a 5D mk4 owner and absolutely love the camera, I mostly use it for Motorsport, comic cons and concerts and it performs really well. I also have a 6D mk2 when I need a flip screen. I have replaced the shutters in both of these after some really heavy use and would do the same again rather than go mirrorless at this time.

What makes you stay with DSLR over mirrorless for now? Mainly curious, I am also a 5DIV, 6DII, and 7DII owner. Still haven't gone mirrorless.
@SimonPhillipsPhoto
@SimonPhillipsPhoto 3 ай бұрын
@unityxg they are good but there’s perks with dslr like battery saving, able to see through the viewfinder for astro where a mirrorless you see noise and darkness. Also there’s no difference with image quality despite the marketing tactics. I like the bigger and more durable body as well, most mirrorless cameras feel small to me but that’s just being picky that last one.

@@unityxg For me I feel I would not benefit enough by going mirrorless. I achieve very good results with both the 5D mk4 and 6D mk2 and can easily go a day on one battery on either of those bodies. Neither the R5 nor R6 mk2 felt like a big enough upgrade for my photography. Also, many of my lenses are 3rd party either Sigma or Tamron, which I have found to be brilliant and somewhat cheaper. So with the Canon RF mount still not being open to 3-party lenses, I feel put off to invest. I will confess though, if I replace my 70D crop sensor camera I would consider the R7, but at this stage, I am happy with DSLRs.

Thanks for a great review that highlights how great this camera is for photography! I really appreciate your perspective. Most KZbinrs go on (and on) about how it's not a great camera for video. No kidding. If I want a camera for shooting video, I'll get the Canon 5RC or C70... I have both 5D Mark IV and the EOS R - I'm considering selling the R. They're pretty similar in terms of output. I much prefer how the 5D feels and operates. Don't get me wrong, the EOS R is awesome, but I don't think I can justify the cost of having both.
@SimonPhillipsPhoto
@SimonPhillipsPhoto 3 ай бұрын
Thank you! I have found that with folks on KZbin today verses say 5-10 years ago when you would get some really good info, I struggle to find good videos anymore about gear. The camera is good for video as many have used it commercially in the past for just that, a C70 would be great for video or even a C200 would be nice. I know what you mean about the R. I had a play with one when it first came out, before my KZbin days and I did like it but it felt like a 6D mk2 with a 5D mk4 sensor in a mirrorless body. The 5D certainly feels better equipped and more solid. I did love the R when it came out but it wasn't all there for me, oh boy that Touch Bar I had to disable that.

Hahaha I can tell you this much no 5D was harmed in the making of that video! My pleasure! it really is a fantastic camera, I still can't fault it. The past two days I have been shooting on a mirrorless camera and I miss my 5D so much, it just works and settings I need to change quickly are often just a few quick presses away. It is kind of sad to know there will no longer be any more DSLR cameras made by Canon and the 5D mark IV is the last of such an important camera in Canon's Legacy. Keep shooting on your 5D4 bother until it dies like I will be doing. What glass do you have with your camera?

Nice lens line up you have there! I forgot about the 40mm 2.8 pancake lens, I will have to get that one day for a bit of fun. Yep since they have gone fully into their mirrorless R systems they have gone away from DSLR and M series cameras, which I think is a shame. I don't like the new R cameras and glass as there's a lot packed into them but they are a bit to complex for me and they don't feel the same anymore. If I was given a R5 I would sell it the next day and buy another 5D mark IV to be honest despite it being 8 years old this year.

Doing this will really help me out a lot and also shortening my travel times which is why I am moving back to England as my drives to locations will be far less and I can easily stay at places along the way. Great video Simon thanks mate just one question do you miss having a flip out screen that you can tilted different angles to get low or high? Is that something that impacts or is that something you work around and adapt to. I agree, there are so many DSLR cameras that are still fantastic for landscape photography, and given most landscape photography isn't shot at high shadow speeds frames a second is not something that you really need to be worried about with landscape Photography. What is important is dynamic range and image quality. Those two things are so important in a camera and it seems that this camera is very good at that having seen your images. Also I can attest to this camera also, and it's one of the reasons why I keep my Nikon D850 even though I have a mirroless camera as you know
@SimonPhillipsPhoto
@SimonPhillipsPhoto 8 ай бұрын
Thank you Nev! with the flip screen not being on the camera I honestly haven't found it to be a problem, when I am working up high or down low I can normally somewhat make out what is going on. So long as I am able to frame my composition, focus and get the exposure right I am pretty happy. If I need to alter other settings deeper in the camera I will generally take the camera off the tripod and do what I need to. What I like about not having a flip screen is one less thing to go wrong, I have had flip screens on my other cameras and most of the time I just found myself keeping it flat with the camera like a normal display. In all honesty this camera will still do great for most things apart from sports I would say as the auto focus system isn't as fast as the 1D series cameras, you can still use these for a lot of applications and resolution hasn't improved that much. Like the R5 for instance is 45mp where the 5DSR was 50mp, but in saying that now the cameras can do a high res shooting which is more down to a software improvement than a hardware thing. There is no difference in image quality when it comes to mirrored and mirrorless, I have certainly not seen a difference and there's perks with both systems and also disadvantages as well. I can see myself shooting with the 5D mark IV for possibly 10 years, nothing else really jumps out at me... The Leica SL2S is nice but that is more a luxury item that will still do the same things the 5D4 will do.

Great video very informative! I just have one question. Why do you cover the view finder when taking a long exposure picture?
@SimonPhillipsPhoto
@SimonPhillipsPhoto 4 ай бұрын
I am glad to hear you found it useful 🙂 The reason why I cover the eye piece for my long exposures is to prevent light from entering the camera via the prism then down to the mirror box and leaking onto the sensor. Canon provide this part which is often on the strap that came with the camera, mirror less cameras don't have to worry about this since the view finder isn't an optical one. I hope that clears up your question for you :) If you have anything else to ask feel free to do so!

Hi Simon, I appreciate your openenss about you health situation and I am very sorry for what happend to you. I wish you swift and complete recovery. It also caused an interesting „gear journey“ which made me think. I‘d be very interested in your thoughts … a. How do you feel about the change in resolution and - I believe - also in color-depth (Hasselbad vs 5DMk4). In which contexts do you miss resolution? How much and what sizes do you print? In context of printing, how is the difference between Hasselblad and 5DMk4 (e.g. color rending, details, etc)? b. I recently tried the Nikon D850 and was very impressed by the sensor. (I am also a 5DMk4 user). I really liked to work with the files. Why has the D850 never been an option in your eyes? c. You seem to consider the Leica SL2 as an alternative option. What does it make a better camera (system) than the R5? The R5 has similar resolution and is lighter than the SL2, both are mirrorless.
@SimonPhillipsPhoto
@SimonPhillipsPhoto 5 ай бұрын
Heya Chris, My pleasure it was harder back then and thankfully I am better than I was back then though I still have some restrictions which is a bit annoying... I will just live with those and do my best. 1. To be honest I know there's a difference there between the colour depth and resolution. In all honestly since making the switch back I have found it hasn't impacted me like I thought it would do, prints wise I don't tend to really do them but from the prints I have done for myself I haven't found this to be a problem. I don't plan on doing massive prints. I took a photo last year on a 20 year old camera with 12 megapixels and on a A4 print it looks nice and detailed. How big I could print depends really on viewing distances which will affect the dpi. 2. Why the Nikon D850 didn't tempt me is I don't really like them more from a user usability for me personally, I just find Canon to be easier for me to use. Also with lenses I know how most of them perform and I know which ones to buy, it isn't a new system for me to learn. 3. The reason I looked into the Leica SL2S was not the resolution or the weight, it was more the experience when shooting is really nice. The menu system is so simple it reminded me of my Hasselblad X1D-50c I used to own. I picked up the camera at an event and I worked out how to use it all in just a few minutes. The R5 is a amazing camera but for me it lacked a charm about it, also 45 megapixels in a small full frame sensor is the reason I didn't buy a 5DSR because the pixels are smaller and won't render colours as well, I am more likely to have hot pixels (I have these on the 5D4 but I don't find it as bad). The 5D mark IV as a camera/tool works really nicely for me and the glass is really nice though my 17-40 and 24-105 aren't perfect but most of those imperfections or character of the glass doesn't really show up in most print sizes.
@zvitkovits
@zvitkovits 5 ай бұрын
@@SimonPhillipsPhoto Thank you, Simon. I share your experiences / concerns with R5. Besides that I still prefer the OVF. Last question, have you ever tried Fuji‘s GFX platform? Do you have an opinion on it, especially after your experience with the Hasselblad?
@SimonPhillipsPhoto
@SimonPhillipsPhoto 5 ай бұрын
No problems Chris. I was originally looking at the R5 but once I put all the costs together buying a Leica SL2S with similar glass there was only about $800 difference between them. It came in at just over $11,000 from memory. My 5D mark IV setup I have now got, which I purchased second hand came in at just under $5,000. I did have a play with the GFX system, I did like the files but for me to use the camera it didn't work the way I liked, it was very different to the Hasselblad X1D-50c. The Hasselblad was simple to use and I enjoyed using it, if Hasselblad had more glass options in the X glass I would have kept my X1D and sold everything else.

When you use the Canon 5D Mark iv for b&w photography, do you set the camera for b&w style method? Does the raw file and jpeg both archive as a b&w capture? Or, do you let the camera write a color image and later convert in Photoshop? Is there a benefit in one method over the other? I also have the 5D Mark iv and might begin taking b&w photos. I see that Pentax is developing a b&w camera with no Bayer Filter with each pixel serving as a lightwell -- no demosaic necessary. Would this camera be superb to our b&w capture from our 5D Mark iv's? Maybe just slightly? Or maybe insignificantly better? Thanks, Mike in Louisiana
@SimonPhillipsPhoto
@SimonPhillipsPhoto 5 ай бұрын
To be honest I only shoot in RAW, when I select the B&W picture profile in camera it is more of a guide for me. I like to convert my RAW files over to B&W in Lightroom as it gives me way more control over the JPEG version which is really limiting. Mind you if I'm just heading out for a bit of fun and I don't plan on editing the photos later on then I have that option to use the preset in camera, I do like to tweak the settings in camera to something that looks more pleasing to me. A RAW file converted over to B&W will always be better than a JPEG version out of the camera. You could get your 5D4 converted over to full time black and white which will give you much truer results as it has been setup and calibrated to give you the best dynamic range possible. I hope that helps.

When you have a multitude of KZbinrs upselling the Canon Mirrorless gear etc . They aren't critical enough of the pricing . A 5D Mrk4 is 2,699 .. I assumed Canon would have reduced the pricing instead they increased the price what with there drive to upsell there mirrorless tbh I can't see myself selling all my gear mainly because there is a serious lack of affordable lenses . . I recently bought a 5DSR 2nd hand , still to get a CF Card possibly in January 24 . Once i get it i'll retire my 850D and move main camera 90D as backup ..

I know I don't really get it after I was shooting mirrorless as my main camera system, it was nice but there's nothing ground breaking from it. The video features would have been possible with a dslr it just didn't happen as the technology wasn't a possibility at the time. I would have thought the same thing as they are no longer making dslr cameras and EF glass so why do those prices have to go up, I noticed one lens has gone up $600au which is madness. At least there's places we will be able to get used gear from at some nice prices. Best of luck trying to buy CF cards as I looked recently and they are pretty hard to find but B&H seem to have a few on their site, people are asking way to much money for used ones it is madness. Keep shooting and creating my friend!

There are some subtle changes to the camera which makes a difference, the newer sensor certainly performs better than the mk3. You have the touch screen which you didn’t have on the mk3, you have 4K video, wifi, gps and a few other handy features. Having the extra 8 megapixel pixels doesn’t sound like much but if you crop a bit with your photos at times it certainly helps.

@jerryinsc no problems at all, sorry for the late reply. I just had a look at the 5D4 and you're right it has that feature on the camera as well. I absolutely would! There’s really nothing wrong with the camera almost 8 years on since it was released. The image quality is superb and so is the auto focus, when I haven’t used it for a while and go back to it I think this camera will last me for years. I don’t really like the R series of cameras, they don’t feel as good in the hands and the shooting experience feels like you’re taking a back step as the camera does everything for you. Plus looking at a screen ie viewfinder takes a bit of getting used to and can give you headaches. I can easily look through a dslr viewfinder for many hours without any problem. You’ll love the image quality from the 5D mark IV. Also pick up the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II that lens is just exceptional!

you say that due to the back pain you went with 5d mk.4 because it's lighter ... but based on your other videos, you're still using a heavyweight gear in my opinion ... also you said here in this video that basically cameras made after 2017 are all good ... I agree with that. Let me throw my 5 cents in: I believe that perhaps you could consider to not insist on fullframe and go with smaller sensor size ... I was a bit in similar position, thanks to God not due to health issues but because I am not the youngest one and landscape photography for me is a synonym for staying out there and hiking. I am however using a different system (I am using Nikon DSLRs - yeah, I am not MILC guy too) .. Why do I say it ... I am owner of D850 which is the pinnacle of DSLRs but I use it probably in less than 20% cases .. Normally I am using my trusted D7200 because the set is much lighter and under normal lighting there's literally zero chance that anyone will be able to safely distinguish images from it from D850 even with pixel peeping involved. Also tripod and other gear like filters do a lot. I am using Feisol CT-3442 which is the best ultralight tripod ever made and Kase magnetic filters. Realizing this was a real gamechanger for me. When I go out with my D850 I am only taking two glasses: 16-35 and 70-200 ... With my D7200 my basic set is Tokina 11-20 and Nikon kit lens 18-140 .. If you're in doubts go at site like unsplash or flicker and find some images that will make your jaw drop ... I assure you that 80% of them were taken with cameras that you (or me) probably wouldn't use even as paperweight ... I wish you a good light and strong back !!!
@SimonPhillipsPhoto
@SimonPhillipsPhoto 6 ай бұрын
Thanks! I understand what you mean but for me I didn't want to go to a smaller sensor size as the benefits it gives is worth the extra size and weigh for me. The weight of all 3 lenses and the camera is still lighter than 1 lens and the body of my old Hasselblad setup. I have got a new tripod now which is almost 1kg lighter now and that has made quite the difference. since I need two setups in my bag one for stills and the other for video that is what makes it harder to keep that weight down. For my longer walks I am thinking of using a lighter video setup like my pocket 2 with a wireless mic setup. I also have had a look into the Kase magnetic filters and I might buy a little setup next year, my filter setup is big and clunky and it isn't something I need all the time. I can also say now since moving away from medium format my back is a lot better these days which is great! I'm able to do more than what I was able to do before. It is just about making reductions in other areas to make it work better for me :)

@@SimonPhillipsPhoto yeah, I cannot even imagine how it is so when you are also carrying around a videography gear .. tough, real tough ... I was considering at least in past 3 years to start vlogging my outdoor adventures myself but what deters me is exactly this - to carry around too much that could actually spoil my outside experience completely. I am considering instead to buy something like Sony RX100 mk.7 (compact camera with 24-200 fx equiv f/2.8-4.5 lenses that weights 300g altogether) which is other extreme .. But as I've indicated above, my photography would be nothing without hiking and since my home is Scandinavia and I will be soon 60 I don't want to risk an accident in remote deserted mountains because of additional and heavy camera gear .. have a good light Simon ... It really is tough and trying to keep that weight down where I can while not making to many compromises, I have to carry 2 tripods with me my current one for videos is a very cheap yet lightweight one but I’d like to go with a carbon one to save the odd 300 grams. A suggestion I’d say for you if you want to document your photography is look at using your phone or better yet get the DJI pocket 2 or 3 system with the wireless mic. That is lightweight and such a nice compact system. I’m going to use mine more as I can’t always carrying around the setup I’m using. I have also made another change and those are on their way to me right now, I’ll be doing a video on that soon. You’ve made me think about my setup to help make it easier for me both physically and practically. So thank you greatly for this! 👍🏻😎

@@SimonPhillipsPhoto I have the KASE Wolverine Circular Magnetic Filters and love them. I think the ones they sell now are color coded so easy to pick out which filter you need. I don't have an ND Grad but have considered getting one as I live on the coast and it's always windy so bracketing isn't always a good option.

@@jerryinsc I recently picked myself up the same system, I think mine is called the beginner pack I but I could be wrong. I also purchased a 10 stop to go nicely with the 3 and 6 stop and the polariser. I had a look at the graduated polariser and if you use it without the adapter that allows you to slide it up and down then it will be useless, as you'll have to work the scene around the filter. I have personally found when being down at the coastline and I am not shooting directly into the sun I haven't really needed a soft grad for the sky. I normally have enough file info to bring down the sky in editing.

I’ve been considering upgrading to the 5DM4 from the 5DM3. If I go any newer to mirrorless then I lose all of my glass 😞 So with that being said is the 4 taking better enough photos than the 3 to justify spending $700+ on a used model?

You could still buy a mirrorless R camera and use an adapter but I personally don't like the mirrorless cameras that much. The 5D mark IV has some nice little upgrades like the extra 8 megapixels is nice, the touch screen, able to record in 4k if you need that. The differences are small but they make a big difference when using the camera, I was looking at a 5D mark III again but I knew the 5D mark IV would be a camera that will last me a long time. I do also like the bigger feel of the DSLR and the build over the mirrorless full frame bodies, I don't think I would ever own a Canon R camera. You could trade in your camera and buy the 5D mark IV from MPB if you can deal with them where you live.

Also another thing to add. If you're finding yourself limited by your camera right now then it is a nice upgrade as it does have some handy features and I think a better auto focus system. Since they updated the auto focus firmware on the 5D mark III, I felt it was no longer performing as well. I had 2 of them years back so I understand the camera you have currently.

@@SimonPhillipsPhoto the problem I have with the M3 is cropping. I leave town to watch and shoot hawks and eagles etc. So the scenario is usually 100 yards distance between myself and the critters. At 840mm/100 yards the wow factors are lost to the amount of cropping needed. However. At 40 yards say with a perched hawk 30 minutes before sunset the 5D retains loads of that romantic richness after cropping 🤌

It sounds like the extra resolution will really help you out nicely here, and with the high iso performance of the camera you’ll certainly enjoy. Others might suggest the 5DSR but that’s the same age as your mark III and the iso capabilities with that sensor aren’t the greatest. I’d say go for it now you’ve shared some of your reasoning for it. I still can’t believe the camera is 8 years old as it feels better than most cameras today.

2024 i still use it, with Ai i dont need new gear , just software!!!!
@SimonPhillipsPhoto
@SimonPhillipsPhoto 15 күн бұрын
That is absolutely it! all you need is to upgrade the software to make it easier on you. The gear will certainly do the job for many years, you don't need the latest and most expensive gear. I can't tell a different with the end result with gear produced in the last 10 years (that's just an example).

Thank you. It was sad to change systems but now I’m glad I did, because I’ve been able to do much more than I was able to do with my Hasselblad setup.

A bulging disc is a sign for you to switch to a lighter system such as m43😢

It really was annoying but looking back the change back to full frame has actually worked out nicely for me. With m43 I wasn’t fond of the colours, dynamic range and file info. I do like a bigger camera in my hands though.
