Can you make a cot berth to hold you in the rolls? In the bow you could pad up the berth to make a V against the hull. The idea is to make your body fixed, including your head. You will loose the need to be awake when your body is safe from rolling.

@@SailingKittiwake I hear you on the warm weather sailing, our summers actually can be quite hot as currently we are at 30 degrees celcius and it appears this summer will be a warm one with these temperatures forecast consistently. BUT if you were to sail here you would definetly need a well timed "in and out" strategy as hanging around a little or coming a little to early could have some real "brrr" implications. Well done guys, lumpy trip but gaining confidence in your boat. Just curious why you don’t take your reefing lines down to the boom more directly under the reefing crinkle? It would put less stress along the foot and stop the boom from moving so much with the leech tighter. Happy sailing. Andy UK

Yes I agree, with some of the other comments here about your audio being clear an concise. About your mainsail noise, sorry but i haven't noticed before, if you have full batten main and cars and they rattle, try tightening the battens into their pockets more, so there is more pressure on the cars to your mast. I don't know what car system you have so I hope that helps in future. cheers.
@andrewkeir22824 жыл бұрын
I was looking at your reefing line on the mainsheet. Instead of just going to the clew of the reefing point if the line went down to the boom it pull the sail closer to the boom allowing mainsheet tension to be transferred to your leech giving you much better sail shape and less of an issue with a drooping boom which is dangerous in strong winds and high seas.. It would also give you two to one purchase allowing a tighter setting ie flatter setting of the sail which is what you want in stronger winds. I am something later on.only up to 5:30 so I apologize if I have missed something further on.
@andrewkeir22824 жыл бұрын
I did notice in the next few seconds after I posted you have a turning block but it also gows back the end of boom. This arrangement doesnt allow a strong downwards force to transferred to the leech.

Question from a novice... if you went on more of a broad reach rather than dead downwind would that help reduce the roll? I appreciate it would involve longer passage and a few gybes but just a question as some crew may prefer longer passage with less roll. Or would it make little difference? Thanks.

Another great video guys. I used to keep a good supply of stugeron on my boat. A quartering or stern wind are the worst for sea motion. On a dash from the Solent to Cherbourg (a tiny little journey really) we had 6 gusting 7 on the quarter moderating to 3 or 4 later. I took stugeron but my 3 crew refused. I have long been sceptical of your windgauge, but written it off as "oh well I don't know the Med". I do know the Atlantic however and your 30-35 knots look like 20 going by waves and whitetops.
@SailingKittiwake4 жыл бұрын
If the wind gauge is over reading by 15 knots or 75% it would make Skua unrealistically fast in light winds, like extreme racing boat fast. There is white caps indeed, the wide lens camera doesn’t show them very well. Also, it’s a following sea.
@stefflus084 жыл бұрын
An error doesn't have to be linear. Others use a wideangle and still convey to us viewers an amount of whitetops, froth and streaking consistent with the Beaufort scale on the reading.
@SailingKittiwake4 жыл бұрын
Steffen, the wind speed shown on our gauge is always consistent with the forecast, other cruisers’ wind gauges and the recorded wind on the day, so I’m afraid but it works just fine. We’d have to be stupid not to know the difference between 20 and 30kn after 3 years of full-time sailing. A Tayana needs a reef at 20kn; we had three...

Tayanas are built for those conditions, 30 knots true is nothing really drastic nor anything to worry about with the correct reefs and sail configuration, we follow this basic rule of thumb, 1st reef at 20, second at 25, 3rd at 30, although we do fly asymmetric spinnakers in 25 knots+ true wind when racing. Obviously sailing and racing off the Southern Coast of Africa is a world away from the relative benign conditions of the med, I've clocked 48 knots true close hauled (52 apparent) off Cape Town before. I guess if you've only ever known gusty gales and buried toe rails you get desensitized to the apparent risks and dangers so for me it's a bit of a joke seeing people with a second reef in 18 knots??! Fair winds and safe sailing, PS these Tayana 37's will take 60 knots in their stride with the right sail configuration, IE storm jib and storm tri-sail, if no 4th reef
@duncan.52284 жыл бұрын
I remember when you never would have sailed in those conditions. 25 knots was about your limit 😀
@SailingKittiwake4 жыл бұрын
It still is 😁 We wouldn’t go out with a forecast over 25kn (it often gets windier than the forecast), but when you’re offshore on a long passage, you just have to sail in whatever conditions.
