Why is it so hard for people to get that Cultural appropriatIon is only when you use something from another culture and don't credit them for creating it? 😂😂 Appreciating something from another culture's and giving them their flowers for making it is supporting!!

You never know how people will react these days. I've talked to my husband about this. I'm in an interracial marriage, and he's told me that he would love to see me in his culture's traditional clothes. I've also bought earrings and other things made by locals here. It supports them, and if the locals don't mind - I don't see anything wrong with it. I've also asked my husband if he would get angry, seeing people wear things from Honduras, and he said no. "That means they know about our culture, and they like our culture. What's wrong with that?" Normally when I go back to The States to see my family - if people see the things I have from Honduras - it always starts a conversation about the country and the culture. Many people these days though, think that if you touch something from a culture that's not "yours," that it's appropriation. Now I'm not saying appropriation doesn't happen. It does. However, people need to learn about what they're interested in, before they get so upset. It's sad, because instead of sharing cultures and appreciating their different characteristics and creations, people just get angry at each other.
@cathleenc6943Ай бұрын
@rachelfranco8486 it does depend on which cultural group. Here in the US there has been such a long history of people discriminating against, abusing, and killing Indiginous Americans, while at the same time using their images, art, traditional clothing, etc. and even impersonating them, all for profit, humor, and entertainment, to the point that they tend to be unhappy about people dressing like them even in appreciation of their culture. That attitude is less common in many other cultures. Since people don't really understand that cultural appropriation is when you take or use someone else's cultural style or item to make something for profit, and market it as your own, or falsely marketed as made by people of that culture, without giving credit or compensation to the originator(s) of whatever it is you're selling. In my mind, it kind of falls into same category as plagiarism, intellectual property theft, and such, but instead of their being one person/author/creator that you're stealing ideas from, it's a group of people that you are disrespecting and taking advantage of. But if I buy something, listen to something, etc. that is made by an artisan of that group, and I paid them for it, that's just commerce and cultural sharing. Even taking lessons on how to cook, dance, make music, or art from somekne of another culture, that is not, IMO, cultural appropriation. We Americans sure spread our culture anywhere people will let us, so I am more than stoked when I get to participate in, learn about, and enjoy other people's cultures.

Cultural appreciation is different from appropriation. Appropriation would be removing the African context behind it, like when people don't respect the roots behind the music or try to take credit for it. Like how rock music is considered a "white people thing" in America, even though it has roots in Black culture.
