I did this exact thing at my previous house. We made the decision to put the surrounds in-cieling in our loft because we feared the kids knocking them down or off the the stand or something. It still sounded fine even though technically not "how it was meant" and it was a lot less worrying about it

I have a 7.2.4 in open concept, I have my LCR, equipment and 18” subs are inside a console I made. the side surrounds are against the wall on stands to the sides of the sofa , surround rears and the .4 atmos speakers are in 2 rows of the all in ceiling with proper angles. Sounds great and you can’t see a single wire.
