Dr. Carr talks about his testimony this week at California's task force on reparations. He also started a multi-part discussion on the history of the reparations movement in the Americas and all that should be considered in discussing #Reparations. #InClasswithCarr #Knubia.

TLDR: I’ve learned so much from both Dr. Carr and the ADOS Foundation. Although I think they both want redress for Black people in the form of reparations, there are understandable differences between their arguments and that’s okay. It just sucks that it feels as though both sides are taking jabs at the other instead of just disagreeing. Thank you for another very informative class. As someone who spends considerable time listening to both Dr. Carr and the ADOS Foundation leaders (Yvette Carnell and Antonio Moore), I find it discouraging that there appears to be tension between them. I had been more squarely on the side of leading with lineage when making the case for reparations, though Dr. Carr’s insights reveal what I understand to be vulnerabilities with that stance. As I read in some of the comments, it seems that Prof Hunter agrees with the idea of both a U.S.-specific reparations case as well as an international one, which I think has merit. I see the difficulties in prioritizing lineage, particularly regarding how to effectively identify folks without precluding others based on whichever metrics people in power choose (which is a whole other thing to Dr. Carr’s point about them always changing the rules). I’m still trying to learn and my opinion is shifting, I think, for the better after hearing various perspectives. It doesn’t bother me so much that Dr. Carr and ADOS disagree, but it seems that both parties have not quite accurately represented some of the other’s arguments. For example, this is the second week in a row where Dr. Carr seemed to refer to Antonio Moore - there is little or no reference to his name, so I can only deduce from Tone’s testimony - and the ADOS Foundation as folks who say they won’t/don’t vote (gathering this from the “cut the check comment”). I’ve heard Yvette and Tone repeatedly say to vote Democratic down-ballot. While not voting for the top of the ticket is a strategy many won’t get behind for understandable reasons, that’s different than saying they say or instruct people not to vote at all. I Google’d some of their old Twitter exchanges and it seems there have been an issue since at least 2019. Dr. Carr continues to make clear that he at least understands where their passion is coming from, but he also follows up with comments that read as shady to me, which I can understand if folks are coming for him. I’m not on some ol’ “can’t we all just get along?” but in this instance, I do think that many viewers would benefit from both more context around the ostensible issues between each other as well as the extent to which either party would entertain a discussion (perhaps even a debate, though I’m wary of that because that may leave less space for the nuance in arguments and spaces where they agree). I think Yvette and Tone could learn from Dr. Carr. It also seems as though Dr. Carr is not respecting their intelligence at a high level. I typically defer to Dr. Carr’s interpretation on many things. I just think their arguments may not be as completely distinct as they seem, but because people aren’t using names, so following some (not all) of the differences seem a little more opaque. But yeah, Dr. Carr is one of the smartest people I’ve had the privilege to watch. This is tricky and I want us to support whichever actions get Black people the redress they deserve, domestically and globally. If you actually read off of this, then thanks. I definitely would’ve understood if you tapped out or didn’t even dive it at all 😂

Reparations isn't about being a black person and all the harassments that come with that. For me, it's about 1866 and the gains America gathered with free slave labor. What civil suit do you know of that didn't draw a line in the sand?

Thank you Profs. Hunter and Carr- Speaking from across the pond (Poland),once again, on the topic of our common humanity. Let's not get it twisted. The world of commerce and finance, business, etc. has long endeavored to erase those (imaginary) boundaries of race, gender, class and nationality for it's own benefit- and at our expense. Here, I am suggesting that perhaps we do the same, and wipe the sleep out of our eyes, if we expect to meet these global challenges. Cannot thank you enough !!!

@KarenHunter reparations for those of us in the US who descend from slavery here have a right to a claim against the US. Others from other countries who were enslaved by other countries should seek reputations from those countries. Sound Americans get reparations from Caricom, no we should not. We can as a whole do a different case to the UN for worldwide reparations to all who were enslaved of all races

Reperations should be based on lineage. That's common sense and it shouldn't even be an argument. And those discussing Reperations should be foundational Blk Americans. Show me where you have Blk Americans involved in Caricom's reparations discussions And have we been invited? And have we sought to benefit from what they're doing there? The answer's no. And the answer's no here to But I wish everybody success in their endeavors.

I appreciate the conversation. I tend to think that the creation of groups such as ADOS comes out of the need for self-identification. I think Black Americans, African Americans, etc are not distinguished enough to illustrate the specific history of descendants of enslaved people in the US. Having traveled to Ghana and Brazil, I see that as closely connected as we all are there are still differences that preclude me from just saying I'm African or part of the Diaspora. Self-identification is important to our understanding of ourselves even if initially the rhetoric is divisive, more informed spirits will prevail. In terms of reparations, I am uncertain any personal modifier is "incorruptible," skin color is as flimsy as lineage is to me. I prefer Dr. Darity's approach which uses a two-pronged approach for understanding our history in this country, including ADOS and long-term immigrants to the US. Lastly, I think focusing on building up where we are at is as critical as the global mission as a global vision. I think Nkrumah would have achieved his goal if his approach to a united Africa if tribalism/ individuality wasn't shunned for the need for unity against global powers. Although I agree in the long-term with Pan-Africanism, colonized and oppressed people will always seek to stand under the sun as individuals of their choosing before they ever can stand with others. I don't think that's a flaw of our people, I think it's our humanity and any broader Pan-African objective should be developed with that in mind. Just my two cents.

THEY want controversy and conflict of the FBA vs blacks- why is there a question of lineage vs. race, when it’s clear and concise- if your ancestor was a slave in the u.s., then, you deserve reparations- the other question is: how many slaves and how many generations of slavery- what if only one person of ancestry was a slave, vs generations of slaves of ancestry, regardless, we are owed our due reparations

Let’s talk CA. What has happened to California- migration. There are 50% fewer black folks than 30 years ago. Black students are systematically trapped and placed in community colleges. Policies also are trying to reform these colleges to be junior colleges and not community colleges, which is a reaction to the high number of Latinos who are now the dominant minority group who has more children who are seeking to attend college.

Professor Karen, I was one of the people looking for a segment from you and Dr. Carr on the incident that happen at the Oscars. I was looking for a segment because I KNEW you and Dr. Carr would take the incident into the realm of the spirit and bring us up higher and knock a lot of ingrained responses to the stereo types. I unpacked a lot of feelings and I can see myself in what Elder Roland Martin said one bad decision from a Black man should not reflect badly upon us all so stop echoing White Supremacy stereotypes and then I can also see myself in the response to my brothers and Sisters who say "This is a bad reflection upon us as a people" Professor Karen they are using that narrative now when so many White faces have stated now they feel threaten and triggered and afraid to be on stage because Mr. Smith's action has now given license for those to feel embolden to approach the stage and use violence upon a comedian. So yes when one of us does something on a large platform it is weaponized against us collectively and used as an excuse to exclude us, that is a REAL place. Professor Karen I hope I don't sound anti-Black and 1920 in my thinking about the situation but these are my feelings. In one of my statements I even called Mr. Smith act against Mr. Rock a "Mr. Charlie" move, the entire act of slapping a Black man across the face, like some procurer of Black bodies. These are just my thoughts, I will listen to this segment multiple times to flush out my system of ingrain horrible programing.
