John le Carré is 88 now, and 25 novels, 10 films and 6 TV adaptations later, he has new villains: The people trying to take Britain out of the European Union. The author talks with Mark Phillips about his latest novel of intrigue, "Agent Running in the Field," which examines how the British public is being "bamboozled by people with private interests" in the push for Brexit.

He knew how to use the wealth his talents brought him. He bought a mile of coast line in southwestern England (along with his house) back in the 1970s. Later he gave half of it away in a trust to be preserved for public use. I've seen photos of the inside of his house. Aside from it being near the ocean you would never know it's owner was quite rich.

I agree. Wasn't possible back then, but it definitely should be made now. The scope of the story as well as the depth of all of the subset of stories sets it on a league of its own compared to TTSS & Smiley's People.

Supposedly there is a sequel already written to the last Tinker Tailor film, with G. Oldman on board, that could include parts of Schoolboy and/or Smiley's Peeps. That would be sweet

My favorite author. I'm severely dyslexic but I still have read 19 of his 26 books (many more than once). I even read a biography of him. I'll get around to the last 7 eventually. By far the most believable spy fiction ever. They studied his books at the CIA and KGB- even adapting some of the terminology he coined. One former head of the KGB marveled at how well Le Carre understood the USSR, it's people and intelligence services.

I've read all of Le Carré's books, a fair number of them several times, and I'm unhappy, of course, that now there will be no more. I also feel that with Le Carré's death I have--and we have--lost an ally in this world, someone to help us make sense of things, someone to take our side. My favorite of all his books, the one I find the most compelling, is "The Russia House". My second favorite, and the one I consider more objectively his best is "A Most Wanted Man". I suppose his most famous book, "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold", would come in third in my estimation. But I very much enjoyed and recommend even his very last book, "Agent Running in the Field". It involves an ingenious twist worthy of "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold".

He is one of my very favorite authors despite his persistent anti-Americanism, which is not new in him--it can be observed as early as the Karla trilogy, with traces even earlier--but has certainly become more shrill, annoying and, I would say, misinformed, especially in his last eight novels. Nevertheless, I've read all of his books at least twice, and some five or six times.

If I did not contort my own first name according to the demands of other linguistic/dialect groupings, and their speech habits, I'd never be able to recognise a call, an address or an overheard mention. I am sure that David Cornwell/J le C himself had come to peaceful terms with such diversity...

I'm just curious how many refugees has the Le Carre estate taken in ? Would he, if still alive, be willing to house these people, including the ones who have no intention at all of being democratic or British? With Millions of pounds made from writing books, a product of the British school system, its culture and its history, would Le Carre give it all up for the unwashed masses and an EU passport ?
