A master’s in Criminology can be beneficial for certain careers (e.g., crime analyst, government positions, researcher, instructor at a college or university). The two main problems is how she went about getting her degree and not marketing herself well enough to get a career in the field. In graduate school, you can get assistantships or fellowships that pay for your tuition. These positions provide the student with the opportunity to work directly with a faculty member to gain experience and to serve as a mentor. It’s important that people network and seek out opportunities to pay for their education that do not require taking out so many student loans.

A year prior to graduating, I asked him to start seriously job hunting...and he said he’d be fine. Now he’s been out for atleast 2 years and still can’t get a job with the degrees. Most of my US friends told me that they have student debt (still a lot of debt even though they have been working for years) & somehow i feel so sorry for them. In the Netherland, My husband took student loan for his Bachelor & Master only €10.000 (€2000/year university fee, for 5 years study). He got train & metro “student” card for free to commute from home-university. Paid off the student loan within 4 years, with only €80 interest in total. Cheap & very low interest. Therefore as a citizen, you dont have to sacrifice that much to enter university. Education is accessible for everyone. Blame the education system at the high school level - they prepare you to join college/university, but leave out the why/how/what purpose...
