The trope of love at first sight has been getting deconstructed a lot recently and I think it may have gone too far, because there is a way to depict love at first sight realistically, and Disney's remake of Cinderella does exactly that.

It shows how relying on nostalgia isn’t all. They were much more similar to the original adaptation but no one was as enchanted. Similar to prisoner of Azkaban in a way, it was easily the least loyal to the books wich tends to piss everyone off.. yet is usually the fans’ favorite because it had the right ‘atmosphere’ that captured the soul of the story the most. Once you can reach that, you don’t need to do exactly what the audience expects.
@LisaGrimm-LG

@@kora4185 oh you shouldn't have brought up Prisoner of Azkaban because I hate it for cutting out important parts of the story which added some complexity to the trio's relationship and turning Ron into a complete joke while giving his heroic or genuinely good moments to Hermione - the very definition of building up the "stronger" female character through bringing down the male one. But I understand what you mean) Good adaptation/remake is not synonimous to "follow the original to the letter/frame") Also, it's the first time I've heard that someone is pissed off by the third movie. Because it is real, problem is that in real life love is a proces from infatuation, to romantic period finishing with habit (what ironically is considered as true love). In my opinion Disney Live Action Cinderella made good job in showing pros and cons and is unjustifiably unappreciated movie.

@@TheRezro for you it's an underappreciated movie. FOr Others it's overappreciated... like "Look, Cinderella is so much stronger of a character because she... does stuff... and could've gone from the household any time she wanted... and she got rescued due to dumb luck after twiling around for a bit"... It's amusing when a character, who is intended to be made "Stronger", gets weaker because somebody didn't think the stuff through. Like having the big Breakdown moment TWICE...

The problem is it doesn’t matter one damn bit if you fall in love at first site. It doesn’t even matter if you despise the person. All you need and yet at the same thing everything you need is for the other person to give you a chance. Without that your love at first site is nothing more than a curse that will cause you pain and suffering. Maybe a woman can wait for this sort of thing since virtually any man will give her a shot. A man can’t. If you’re a dude just find a woman who matches up to your values and marry her whether you love her or not. Your love doesn’t even really matter because whether or not a man loves her and how much is virtually entirely outside of a woman’s consideration anyways. Love isn’t a lie, and I have no doubt it would be wonderful to be with someone who reciprocates it. However, as a guy your chances of experiencing this are pretty low so don’t waste your time since women don’t really care if you love them or not.

I actually like the term: *"Love at true sight."* When you are able to truly see who someone is (whether it is the first or 100th time you see them) you can fall in love with them. I also think that having a conversation (characters getting to know each other) is the best way to show characters falling in love. It is superficial if they see each other and never talk, never really meet each other. But if they actually meet, then falling in love makes sense.

In the original animation Cinderella actually didn't know she was dancing with the prince. He approached her BECAUSE she was more interested in the beauty of the castle than him. And then when the clock strikes midnight, the excuse she gives for leaving him is that she hasn't met the prince yet. She actually doesn't learn he was the prince until she figures out that the prince is looking for her with her glass slipper.

In the animated Cinderella, the prince looks right at his dad and makes his yawn as big and obvious as possible in an attempt to get under the king’s skin. To me, it was a little moment of defiance; the yawn was his version of a middle finger to his old man. (Which totally works, so it’s obvious he knows how to push dad’s buttons.) It’s not a lot of character, but it’s a teensy glimmer of rebellion that I appreciate each time I watch the movie.

I agree with a lot of what ur saying but I don't think the yawning was an attempt to get under his father's skin. He knows that his father is trying to force him into finding a wife and they have a distant relationship. U can tell when he up towards his father, there was a clear look of disappointment in his face and the yawning; he's clearly just not enjoying a single moment of it.

Interestingly, for me, it’s largely that one little detail that makes me dislike the prince from the original Cinderella, and love this one (2015 v one). Literally the only character trait we have for him is that he’s openly disrespectful to his single father - which is both bad character and incredibly undiplomatic in front of his subjects - and doesn’t seem to recognize or care that the king is trying to help him be happy the best way he knows how?? Not very attractive. Conversely, the 2015 prince deeply cares about his father, clearly respects and admires him both in private and in public (which is key), and is willing to accept that a man with 40 years of experience on him is probably wiser than him. _That’s_ attractive character to me.

I seriously love this movie and I'm so glad someone defended it and the Cinderella story in general. There are other adaptions I love, but something I like about this movie, is that she doesn't need to wield a sword or be some sort of feminist poster child badass to be a good heroine: her kindness, her courage and bravery in the face of adversity, her empathy, and her choices are what make her a really good character. She could have let her circumstances make her bitter and vengeful like her stepmother and sisters, but instead, even in her darkest moments, she is able to show compassion and forgiveness. These are traits that I think are overlooked in a lot in modern stories.

Yeah, it’s a short movie. It’s better than Snow White but not quite as good as Sleeping Beauty. Eventually, they made it up to Mulan where they weren’t even technically together at the end. At the time, men were expected to marry the first person who gave them a boner and women were supposed to be happy to just be proposed to. It took some time for movies to reflect that love is through personality and can’t just be a connection of the soul or whatever

I'll give you best "love at first sight" scene, but man, I have got to tear down everything you said about Animated Cindy. Production-wise, the live-action cinematography was impressive, but mostly safe. Everything was perfectly framed and lit to highlight all the pretty colors, making it look more like a Thomas Kinkade painting than a tale of conflict. The animated movie used dark shadows and erratic shots, heightening the tension to Hitchcockian levels. Not saying that darker is better, but it is better at showing just how bright the cinders of kindness and courage can glow. The subtleties in the animation add a lot more depth than you're giving it credit for. For instance, when the Prince yawns, he flashes his dad the stink eye. He's not just board. He's tired of his father manipulating him. He's drawn to Cinderella because she looks too confused to be a part of the plan. She doesn't know he's the Prince, because her whole excuse for leaving is that she hasn't met the Prince. They'd bond naturally, both being raised by psychotic parental figures. Given, mutual trauma isn't as good of a grounds for a relationship as mutual strength of character, but it's sufficient as a subplot to the heart of the story. The heart was the love between Cinderella and the animals. Yeah, live-action Cindy feeds animals, but she's never punished for it, so it isn't particularly courageous. Animated Cindy suffered dire consequences, but continued protecting the animals, which served the themes of kindness and courage far better. Likewise, the animals risked their very lives to help her, making their love for her more potent than the live-action Prince's. As limited as Golden-age Disney's romance was, their portrayal of the power of friendship was unparalleled.

@thehussarsjacobitess85

I agree! And to add my personal nitpick: Shad said that the stepmother had no motivation in the animated film. I really feel like a heel for pointing this out, but her motivation was to make sure that Cinderella didn't outshine her homely daughters and take away their chances of an advantageous marriage. I know that none of us feel comfortable when people with disadvantages that they can't help become the villains, but that does happen in real life. The stepmother spent the whole movie desperately training them to be marriageable and doting on them to protect their egos. Cinderella (as another interpretation of the character put it) was clearly competition. That doesn't justify the stepmother's actions, but it was clearly misguided maternity that drove her, not the rather flimsy envy shown in the new film (which I otherwise enjoyed).

I never saw the movie, but just looking at the cast I can tell the acting talent is top notch. The cynicism that says love at first sight isn't real, and the general cynicism that's become rather popular, is kind of unhealthy. I have experienced something like love at first sight. It was hard even to describe, like my brain shorted out, and no it was not lust, and there were so many significant glances exchanged, and I audibly gasped and was almost physically stunned at first site. It was the most uncanny experience I had ever felt because even my sense of time seemed to become distorted. But I won't go into that. But yes, one must distinguish love at first site from lust at first site, and this isn't a reason not to believe in the former. Your breakdown of that scene was excellent. Now I'll have to watch the movie.

The prince and Cinderella (in this case), and even Shad and his wife still had interactions that cemented their feelings of love and built a foundation for their relationship, like a tiny, hastily built but still well designed castle. Those interactions are the real romantic part of these kinds of stories, in my opinion. Without this, the story ends up feeling superficial or outright boring. And I think that is why Shad needed to tell us about his own interactions with his (future) wife for this video to actually work very well. But in too many stories and films, we only see the simple equation: Handsome guy + beautiful woman = love. Without any real interactions that have an impact on the characters or myself while watching/reading. It's like the authors are thinking that the lable 'love' must be sufficient and the characters don't need to have lovely, funny, interesting or ANY interactions or even have personalities in some extremely bad cases. Basically, many authors are skipping their actual work. And because of that, love at first sight is very often a cheap, quickly manufactured love story of bad quality because It's sufficient that the couple stares at each other exactly once and the rest is some filler crap. That's how I see it, at least. Well, I did exaggerate to make it easier to understand :)

I actually like all the live action movies so far that I have seen. I am a bit annoyed by the autotune in the Beauty and the Beast movie songs, but well... the cartoons are always still better. As for the Cinderella story I can't help but always compare it to the classic fairytale movies I've seen while growing up. Disney always changes so much about the fairy tales, inserting things like fairy godmothers and true love's kiss and I don't know...and they take out the violence. In the Grimm's fairytale, the stepmother forces her own daughter to cut off her toes to fit into the shoe. Children have no problem with that, it just shows how evil the stepmother is. And the horseriding and interrupting the hunt - I feel like Disney took that from the older Czech movie Three Gifts for Cinderella.

This movie was OK, but I have to agree with The Nostalgia Critic on this one: the best Cinderella film was actually Ever After, which blows both Disney versions away. Everything you're saying this film did well, Ever After did even better. The prince had a real personality, the stepsisters had real (and distinct!) personalities, the stepmother had a real reason for her antipathy towards Danielle, and there was instant chemistry between her and the prince, based largely on his admiration for her intelligence and independence. Heck, there are even swords, and Danielle gets to use one!

Ever After was beautiful, but I struggled with the romance. Why he fell in love with her made perfect sense, but even after he wakes up to his own hypocrisy, I never understood why she would have fallen for him. His character, although realistic, was a spoiled entitled boy who isn't bad and wants to be better but also is largely influenced by the stronger personalities around him. He seems more like a collection of other people's opinions of him and less someone of his own character. He grows as the show goes on, but again, it's into what someone else expects of him, not his own person. He's just chosen better people to be influenced by.
@Pip8448
@Pip8448 3 жыл бұрын
@@SharmClucas Yes the Prince Henry was mostly shaped by those around, but that's what royalty IS: Trained from childhood to be and do what's expected of them. It isn't until he reaches an age where he might be taking over the throne when his parents allow him "free time" (with personal guards and a teacher), to even START thinking for himself. At that time he meets a (pretty enough to catch his eyes and ears) girl that asks questions (that he's heard before, but was told what the proper/expected answer would be) and by way of attempting to be attractive to her ACTUALLY makes him think about his answer. Before her, even when he'd say something "off the mark" people would just accept his answer because he's the prince. You even get to see her disapproval in her expressions and his "charm" wobbles and drops. Then he's stumbling looking and actually thinking for himself for a change. He sees things for himself and sees what he needs to change in himself for the betterment of himself AND his kingdom. So yes, it's clear why he fall for her. Maybe she falls for him because he's the first non-push over that actually listens to her and seems to genuinely care for her. Plus he's obviously a huge step up for her socially and financially. I do like how she tried to through him off because she thought she wouldn't be good enough for the nobility or the kingdom. Her very good male friend isn't a good match because he doesn't challenge her to grow and doesn't share her interests, though he does care for her.

You know them deeply, and despite not knowing them for long or perhaps only knowing them for a day, you know they are the one. Because your heart knows them, and their heart knows you.

i honestly love this live action. One small thing though, in the animated movie Cinderella didn't know she was dancing with the prince either! When she had to leave the ball, she said that she hadn't seen the prince yet. So in both movies Cinderella falls for the guy without knowing he is the prince. Good video!

this movie is really good, seriously. This scene was incredible, and all their other interactions. Not only that, I write, and I usually only pay attention to the story of the movie, but there was a moment in it that it is so well done that I was mesmerized by the direction of the movie. I got shivers from it, really. It was when Cinderella was leaving with the prince and her abusive stepmother was standing in the stairs and Cinderella looks at her and there is a moment of silence. Ella now has the power. She's a future queen. But her mother stands tall above her, and you see the camera approaching the stepmom, while there's a distortion of the image, and it basically just makes you feel every feelings that Ella is when she looks back at her, one last time. Anger and fear all together, even when she holds the power, the feelings of years of abuse are still there, stronger than ever cause it's the last moment, and if she wants to do something, it's now or never. But then, Ella just says "I forgive you", which is the most powerful line in the movie. She was in power because she ascended socially, but that line is what made her win against her mother. The fact that an abusive parent figure who raised her failed to make her a monster, failed to change her for worse, that she managed to stay true to herself despite all the strong feelings she got for that person... Seriously. One of the least moments in cinema that made me think about the direction

I really liked this adaptation. Had a huge smile on my face when it ended. I looked over to the older lady next to me and she had the same satisfied reaction. We came out of that theatre with a better mood and with my heart feeling warm. Cinderella survived and thrived even under cruel conditions and she never lost her grace, kindness and compassion. She didn't whine or wallow in her sad situation. I liked how they characterized the prince as well. This movie made me look forward to Beauty and the Beast but sadly I came out of that theatre frustrated, annoyed and with a frown on my face. That frown started early on in that first number as it gave me a clue how the tone will go. Maybe it was bec this (Cinderella) was the first live action adaptation, maybe it was bec this was helmed by Kenneth Branaugh, maybe this was before Disney went full-on "woke", but this one is a definite keeper for me. And on a lighter note, that blue gown is much better than the yellow/gold one Belle had in her adaptation. I think they are planning to do a live adaptation o f Little Mermaid, I'm dreading that one and wish they would just leave it alone. Mulan will be released on Disney+, maybe I will eventually give that a go ...maybe...eventually (after reviews) , since it feels like it may be more of an adaptation of the original tale of Mulan (more of a drama than comedy and not a musical) and not of the Disney animated version.

Mulan could have been great. Man it had so much potential. But the story writing was so so so horrible that every scene felt lacking and especially the ones that tried to be all deep and sophisticated just, flopped. It sure left a bitter taste in my mouth as I adored the cast pick and the music and the cinematography a lot. But the screen writing was just bad. A total waste and a huge shame.

True, this whole movie was masterfully done I would say, from writing and casting, the acting and the scenery it was all beautiful. I do want to point out something about the origional, you said in the vid that there she does know the prince but she actually doesn't. As an excuse to to say she must leave she tells the prince thats she still needs to meet him and later after the ball even says that the princ himself wouldn't have been so great after which she learns that it actually was the prince she fell for. I just wanted to make that known

I think that the hatred of the "Love at First Sight" (LaFS) trope has less to do with the concept of a short relationship or the actual "falling in love", but the tropes *surrounding* it. For instance, it's pretty damn frequent, *especially* in Harlequin-style romance, that LaFS is directly or indirectly coupled with the tropes of the "Soulmate" or what I call the "Man Knows Best" trope (I know it has a proper name, but I have *no idea* what it is). Both tropes are especially egregious in paranormal or "fantasy" type romance. Think of the sheer number of stories - again, especially in magic-based worlds - where the hero and heroine (and it's nearly always a hero and heroine. In the homosexual romances I've read, these tropes seem far less common) meet and *immediately* jump in the sack, so to speak. In the beginning of the video, you used what I think is an excellent example of LaFS done right in Talisa and Robb. Now, I personally didn't like the subplot because - like a lot of things - the book did it better, but the show version showed them meeting, falling in love, realizing it, coming to terms with it, and then acting on it. They actually talked and had interactions and knew each other prior to their confession, even though it was a short amount of time. In a lot of LaFS stories, it's more "Dude and girl meet eyes. Both feel instant attraction. Both confess love/kiss/have sex before barely speaking a handful of sentences to each other." Then with the Soulmate trope, we have free will taken out of the equation as well (and the Soulmate trope has it's own set of issues besides that). The best modern example I can think of is Jacob and Renesmee in the Twilight books. Spin it however you like, it's textbook LaFS for an *infant* wrapped up in a Soulmate trope. And in a lot of LaFS stories I have read, this leads from the "Soulmate" trope directly into the other trope I mentioned. It's common for the male to do the chasing, frequently well passed the point of consent and frequently over the objections of the female. Again to the Twilight example, with Edward literally disconnecting Bella's car battery to keep her home or literally using the promise of sex to manipulate her into marriage. A *shocking* number of romances I have seen use LaFS as an excuse to skip character or relationship development altogether, skipping the even "getting to know you" stage and going straight from "Hello!" to "Okay, we sex and marry now?". Even in your own example of your own life, it was a couple months before you asked your future wife out, then two weeks until proposal, and a couple months to marriage. Most LaFS stories I have read shorten that to hours or days in universe, and this is - again - *especially* prevalent in magic and fantasy-based stories. Again to the Talisa and Robb example: You have the stages First Sight, Rapport Building, Awareness, Recognition, Courage/Maturity/Confession. In a lot of LaFS stories and I think where the crux of the issue comes, is that they go straight from First Sight to Confession and frequently couple that with a male-centric pursuit that borders on abuse. I *adore* good romance, but I've had to put down I don't know how many romances because they have literally triggered my sex abuse-based PTSD. tl;dr The issue with LaFS romance isn't that it's unrealistic, but that it's very frequently done poorly and coupled with other romance tropes and is used as an excuse by lazy writers to skip character development and get straight to the juicy shagging bits. And since this problem in stories with LaFS happens to often, people get tired and fed up with it because the failures of bad LaFS are just so grating. There's great LaFS stories out there, but they are few and far between compared to the sheer plethora of LaFS that is just a poorly written excuse to excuse abusive characters and/or skip whole sections of character development. (fyi, funnily enough, my all time favorite story with both LaFS and Soulmate as tropes came from a freakin' *fanfiction* for the Legend of Zelda, if you could believe that. The author of the fic is a published author of original work now, but in the fic managed to both play LaFS and Soulmate straight *and* deconstruct the potential issues and pitfalls of both.)

That’s the problem with the 'soulless remakes' and you can say that all remakes are soulless but I disagree. Yes, they’re a cash grab and unnecessary by the status of their existence, but Cinderella and Maleficent actually wanted to explore previously unseen themes, characters and dynamics that change the overall plot just enough or a fair bit. The Lion King by contrast? Nope. Scene by scene recreations, which while striking in the CG department, feels heartless and emotionless.

When I met my fiancée for a first time, we were talking only for a less than hour while she was helping me with headache. But when we met for a second time a year after, it turned out that we were thinking about each other all this time. It was in middle school, we were kids then and our romantic relations started only years after, but I still don't know how to live without her and will remember our first shared moments until the end of my life. And if someone will say that love at first sight does not exist, I will feel pity for this person.

Shad, you're dragging western storytelling out of the mire of demoralizing, insulting subversion too fast, leave some for the rest of us aspiring writers, eh? and although with you being a medieval enthusiast I always implicitly knew it to be true, it's good that you confirmed your belief that groan-worthy puns are indeed the highest form of comedy. So few people these days can appreciate this truth. Although, I may have a more medieval appreciation for slapstick and fart jokes than even you...

Fun Story: I watched a clip of my favourite Korean singer-songwriter and actress participate as a guest on a radio show back in 2013/2014, and literally saw her fall in love with the radio host (also a musician) in a matter of minutes. Even the most miniscule and subtle details of their gradual infatuation with each other was so obvious, I felt like an intruder lol. 2 years later, she admitted they "fell in love at first sight" and I had zero doubts regarding that admission. I never believed in the idea of "love at first sight" as it seemed trivial and doesn't sound reasonable enough to become a basis of pursuing a romantic relationship with an individual you've merely met. That is until I saw it unfold in my own eyes. Unfortunately, they've broken up back in 2017. But she did manage to produce one of the most legendary albums, and even had The New York Times write about it in the same year lol.
