I really like the voices that the Aftons were provided in the FNaF games. As of late, however, a specific facet of their voices seems to be being ignored. Which is why I'm choosing to speak in defense of the Aftons' British accent. This is probably the closest I'm going to get to a video essay on this channel lol.

If I come across as a little salty in this video... well, I am a little bit, but please don't take it too seriously. I'm very passionate about this, is all. Criticism appreciated :)

In all honesty I'm really embarrassed about this video being the one to gain so much popularity. I was proud of the editing, but the contents and the argument itself was rather lacking. I'm glad so many people agree, though. But I promise to take more care when constructing these kinds of scripts, as expressing my feelings properly is very important to me.

As someone who has made multiple headcanons about the Aftons connection to the UK, my personal favorite was the idea that even though Elizabeth and CC were born in the USA William was still very determined to keep their accents british, so he prohibited them from viewing american media and forced them to watch his old recording of "Thr fawlty towers" on vcr all the time

Just a quick side note here, you don't need to be from Britain or live there to have an accent. I have a distinct British accent even though I was born and lived all my life in America. The only reason I have it is because my dad has an accent. That's it. The rest of my family I see on a regular basis, my mom, my half brother, my grandma, all of them have American accents. The children or William's wife never even needed to live in England for an accent to develop, and I'm a living example. There doesn't have to be any backstory other than William was born in England. It's easy just to write in on a whim.

It makes me very unhappy that the Afton's accents are being erased. For William, it made him feel more sophisticated, and it added to the vibe that he was a genius in robotics and he was absolutely evil. Without it, he seems generic, even a little boring. He sounds like the movie villains we've heard thousands of times before. And for all the other Afton's, not only does it just give them a super cool vibe, but it helps connect them to each other!

As a Biritish person I found it really nice to have a British video game character because they are always American. And if they are British then they have the most stereotypical posh Queen's English voice so having British characters made was a nice change for once. Once good use of an American Willaim Afton is on Squimpus Mcgrimpus' Fnaf Analog Horror series, namely the video, "Memories". Want to boost this in the algorithm for sure. Hard agree; I never really thought they needed a justification for being British, but the fish-out-of-water vibe (considering the series takes place in Utah, not even on the Eastern seaboard where one might expect something similar) really does distinguish them more. Honestly I wonder if they removed the accent to make it more ambiguous whether or not theyre bringing any of the Aftons back as different characters in the new games (for instance, if patient 46 suddenly broke out an English accent, everyone would narrow down their identity immediately). I hope not, but it might be a factor. (Steel Wool please keep them british the series is complex enough without an inability to recognize some of the main players). Also now I like the idea of william deliberately moving to america for reasons related to his career in engineering, including but not limited to it being much easier to get a permit to build a huge underground laboratory facility beneath your house, or at the very least making it much more difficult for anyone to discover (and less likely for them to really care) if you do it without one
@bonkboy4386
@bonkboy4386 Жыл бұрын
Yessss, I seriously wonder what the actual reason was that they chose to remove the accent. You do raise a good point about it diminishing some of the mystery, but at least with Patient 46 they don't actually speak, so if they wanted to keep a characters' identity ambiguous they could just make them silent. Besides, Elizabeth shared William's British accent in Sister Location, so this franchise doesn't have much of a history with keeping a character's identity a secret through just showing their voice - people caught on real quick that Elizabeth was William's daughter. I also really like thinking about the potential backstory for William moving to Utah, there's a lot of room for fan interpretation there :))
@DominikaHare

as someone from Europe whose family always tells them “Oh, you should go to America and get a masters there”. Or find a job! I guess I have subconciusly built this whole backstory of William being of the “fancier upperclass” of Europe (high middle class, no he is not brittish royalty… even though that would be hilarious) And moved to America dragging his whole family because “his true potential was being wasted”. Maybe he was a graduate in AI & programming like in my campus, and felt like Europe was small fries to him. Then he ended up in Utah, living the “American life” tm, but not really becoming the big fish he wanted to be. Plus America is expensive as F€#@. So he settled for the Franchise making life, yet refused to adopt any American accent out of pride, because he didn’t want to.

I prefer the Aftons being British, too. But is it possible that the American accent in the games is for Glitchtrap? You know, like how William probably would have been doing a different voice when he's in the suit and pretending to be Spring Bonnie while entertaining families at the restaurant? And since Glitchtrap pretty much looks like the costume character, then maybe it would have William's over-the-top in-character voice? (Like how William speaks in blue and yellow text for the Fruity Maze game in Pizzeria Simulator.) I don't actually know, it's just something that I've thought for a while.
@bonkboy4386
@bonkboy4386 Жыл бұрын
Very late response but this is another good interpretation of the accent change. Since the novel does imply that William puts on a different, more friendly voice for whenever he's in Spring Bonnie mode, it would actually make a lot of sense that he now permanently sounds like this character he puts on because Glitchtrap is a reflection of William from around that time. I feel like that should make him sound more happy, or forced happy whenever he talks, though. Which would make for some great horror through dialogue, as a man who is constantly forced to sound cheery and happy regardless of the context of what he's saying has a lot of potential for creepy moments. But that doesn't seem to be what they're doing with the character looking at Security Breach. Definitely a neat idea though, and it would be cool if they took it in that direction!

As a British Afton Truther (trademark pending) I've always felt that (as you pointed out) their accents set them apart from all the other characters and personally he always reminded me of victorian novel villains for example Mr Hyde and or just a murderous version of Sherlock Holmes, as I feel a lot of his character fits in with their stereotypes because his character always seems to tread the line between chaotic and a calculating villain. Which is why I think him being British when he manipulates Vanny would make much more sense as it could play off the soft spoken devil trope, although there is one point I can concede Glitchtrap could have an american accent since he's a more jovial character which doesn't quite fit with his previous personality. To throw another accent into the ring I would also accept a French William Afton to pay homage to Victor Frankenstein as that is basically the closest character I can think of in literature and it would also make him unique.

I'm gonna admit, I watched your video on a whim. I heard your argument, and it is a good one, but I wanted to give you another point of view. If you watch clips of a character named Charles Emerson Winchester III from the show M*A*S*H* you'll hear that British/American sounding Uppercrust Bostonian accent. But I also want you to think about the most common villain type out there. The Brit. "We need a bad guy to sound really evil." "Quick! Call a Brit." Tom Hiddleston did a car commercial with a couple of other British villains talking about that. Maybe Scott doesn't want to play into that stereotype.
@bonkboy4386

@silverbullet1620 After taking a listen, I don't know that that was the accent intended for the character of Afton, definitely not for Elizabeth as hers is unequivocally British, but I think I can pick up on the resemblance you're suggesting between William and Winchester. Either way the Aftons' place of origin is technically still up in the air. I do agree that the British Villain trope is rather prominent in a lot of media, but I think the foreign accent aids the sense of mystery and the enigmatic nature of the Aftons, particularly William. It is a possibility that Scott decided to avoid the cliché, but I'm still of the opinion that that is the wrong choice for these characters. Still, thank you for the feedback, and for questioning my points, it's good to have your thoughts challenged, and to be told I may not be 100% right about everything :))

i've been upset about the removal of their distinct english accent ever since help wanted so i'm glad somebody finally has made a video about this. "william afton" itself doesn't even sound like an american name, neither does elizabeth, and it'd just never be the same without PJ voicing him. he was so iconic, and the voice for william was perfect. calm with hidden aggression is such a good voice for a villain without it sounding like some villain voice from some kids' show. and it suits him as the villain since he has to sound calm and friendly to lure the children in. it makes no sense to suddenly change their accents for literally no reason. i really hope steelwool hire PJ to voice william again because it'll never be the same without him. also, the english accent in a game with everyone else being american is a really good way to make such important characters stand out without putting in too much effort, it sticks with them as iconic. and as a british person myself, i've loved the inclusion of the villain and his children being british as such a fun detail, because as PJ said, americans usually see the british as evil because of history.

I kinda thought that the reason why afton doesn’t have an accent in help wanted and security breach was because both glitchtrap and burntrap were the mimic, so Scott wanted to differentiate between actual afton and the mimic by giving them different accents
@greenflamingtrap2306
@greenflamingtrap2306 5 ай бұрын
That could be true, but Ruin shows that when the Mimic mimics someone's voice, it can do it perfectly as well as their accent. That's what happened with Gregory and it was his voice actress that did Mimic's lines. So I feel like Mimic could've had the British accent and could've been voiced by PJ Heywood, but Scott chose not to. What likely happened was Scott saw how PJ was being racist on Twitter to China and decided to not work with him anymore and to ditch the accent he gave Afton's voice. So now PJ is no longer the voice for Afton no matter who uses it(Afton himself or Mimic) and the British accent is indeed being retconed. Matthew Curtis is Afton's voice now. I will point out too though that this line here is actually close to PJ's voice and is British. 17:44

I always liked that William's lines sounded like a calm evil genius fascinated with his work, it made him seem more chilling and intimidating. Now it seems like the audience is being told "hey he's the villain and he is scary" which makes it all feel less serious.

I'm certainly a part of The Afton Truthers TM, just because it always gives them a sense of individualism. Literally the only in-universe reason I can think of for William (Likely RAISED in the UK) is that American influence finally got to him. That's it. The code for FNaF VR, an in-universe game, was done in America, and therefore Afton is interpreted as American or SOMETHING. There's no logic outside and most especially INSIDE the universe. Sad mistake here. Rare to see one from Scotty, too :(

It does feel so weird with the accent change, the British voice acting sounded way more realistic then the cartoonish villian dialog in the security breach trailers. I always just thought the accent change was meant to be justified that it's not Afton's body in the suit anymore, just his mind, but its weird that it started in help wanted. Maybe the British accent is something the "Rogue Indie Developer" made up according to help wanted's intro XD

As someone who was born in England but had immigrant parents, I didn't have a typical British accent because I was surrounded by Filipino ones (only having a stronger English accent as I got older). My cousins are the exact same, speaking with a moderately english accent but still maintaining a Filipino-American accent, even though we were all born and raised in England. All in all, it still would've made sense for the Aftons to have a British accent despite being set in America.

I'm neither British or American however I still think that the Aftons having british accents in an american setting is a great idea and not really that confusing. For one I have personal experience with this. I was both born and raised in Austria however my father is from Germany and it's because of him that I didn't grow up with an austrian accent. Sure I use austrian terminology but overall when people hear me speak they sometimes note the absence of an austrian accent and some even ask me if I was from Germany. So not only is it "impossible" for the Afton kids to have been born in the US and have a british accent regardless, but it also makes for some really fascinating story telling. William's kids having the same accent as him despite growing up in a country that has vastly different accents, shows how much William influenced his own children.

The quiet voice with the accent is a lot more likely to be able to manipulate children into leaving their families to be alone opposed to the loud voice. Children don't hear a lot of accents, especially during the time period that it took place in, so hearing one would probably intrigue them or sound whimsical.

I feel the same way. Henry’s voice actor has the best performance in any FNaF game in my opinion and he doesn't use any kind of specific accent. I don’t think a performance requires that kind of flavour to be good or memorable, but I would just really prefer if the Aftons kept their accent. And yh, still watching the movie day one lol. Thank you for liking the video :D

It appears that William Afton has a West Country English dialect. Not only that but maybe the fact that in some lines Afton didn’t have a British accent at all! Maybe that was not Afton at all, but rather, it was foreshadowing the Mimic in Security Breach: Ruin. I think this is because the Mimic didn’t mimic Gregory’s voice perfectly when the Mimic confronted Cassie. Not only that, but maybe the recasting of Afton’s voice actor was done completely on purpose for the sake of the lore. We were fooled by the Mimic the whole time! The Mimic perhaps didn’t have the concept of accents or dialects in mind!

The Security Breach voice makes a bit more sense after Ruin because it’s probably the Mimic or the Mimic Virus talking which is possibly based off of Aftons personality but not voice and if that’s the case the voice is probably some other persons voice it heard or it’s using the voice of it’s creator who was Emily not Afton that or it was some other worker who built it. As for the movie that seems to be its own similar but different universe as none of the characters so far have the same names as the ones from the game.

I’ve always loved how the Aftons had a British accent. It just.. fits them, ya know? And like another comment said, the name “Afton” just sounds cooler when it’s British. I’m really sad that they’ve gotten rid of their accents, it’s always been one of my favorite things about them :(

I am 100% American and even I was rather upset at the loss of the accent. It’s synonymous with the Afton family. When I saw Mathew Lillard was doing William, I actually had some hope that they’d have him do an accent. Lillard is a phenomenal actor and if anyone could do the games version of Williams accent justice, it’d be him. It actually makes me believe that there were attempts to have Matthew Lillard do a British accent, but maybe it didn’t sound right. What ever it is, I do hope that what changes they’ll be making aren’t too jarring for long time fans of the games. You are absolutely correct with the accents making the Afton’s stand out. Not one person who has heard Williams voice lines couldn’t not recognize them outside of the games. The accents are absolutely iconic, but again, I do hope that the path they go with the movie is just as enjoyable as what they did with the games interpretation! Amazing video, by the way. I was thinking there for a time that I was the only person who actually gave a damn about the accents. Maybe I don’t like change or maybe there is something to this favoritism toward the Aftons having British accents.

well potentially, with the whole "mimic" reveal. The voices in help wanted and security breach are technically not William but instead something trying to imitate him, so the voices still work potentially. As the mimic is just a straight "evil" robot, so the generic evil voice might be intentional.

I like the idea that most of the Aftons have a British accent. A defining trait that honestly works even though you can find it elsewhere, and not gonna lie, this makes me wonder about Crying Child's voice. Having an accent as a marker of who's related to who is pretty nice too, because it doesn't need to be a physical trait like eye/hair color. An accent is literally *perfect* for a game who has major family groups in its story. Then they took away the accent. It makes no sense why, even if the Emily family isn't returning to the lore any time soon. I'm hoping that Gregory isn't related to any of the known important families to the lore right now, but since they gave William a normal American accent I can't be sure now. Hell, according to the Aftons having an accent that would definitely not be only theirs, it could pull a nice plot twist: someone's assumed to be related to the Aftons because they have a British accent, only for them to be a random guy.

Here's some food for thought! Afton could very much still be British, because it's heavily implied now that the "Afton" from both Help wanted and Security Breach is an AI Mimic. Thus, the AI could be replicating Afton's psychopathic tendencies, but still fudge up on the accent because it doesn't get everything "right," if that makes sense. Also, I like your voice! It's very soothing :3

That could be true, but Ruin shows that when Mimic mimics someone it can use their voice perfectly. That's what happened with Gregory and it was Gregory's voice actress who voiced it. So Mimic could've perfectly mimicked Afton's voice and had PJ voice it with a British accent, but Scott chose not to. What likely happened was Scott saw how PJ was being racist at China and decided to not work with him anymore and to ditch the accent he gave Afton. So PJ isn't the voice for Afton anymore regardless who uses it and the British accent has indeed been retconed. Not to mention, this line here actually sounds close to PJ and is British even though it's Matthew voicing it. 17:44

I know that this came out before RUIN came out, so I need to really look at it with that kind of eye, but Scott has always kinda mentioned that the games and books were different stories in a similar universe. I also don't think book Afton is ever explicitly stated to be British, which sorta adds more to my point of "of course they're gonna sound different in different media". Now, adding in the additional info from after RUIN came out: We know now that the voice in the trailer was never *actually* Afton's. It was the Mimic. Why he didn't pick up Afton's accent from the supposed circuit boards they used, who knows. But it's *not* Afton, so him having an American accent actually helps differentiate between Mimic and Afton, which also goes to show that Henry's plan at the end of Pizzeria Sim works. All the souls are laid to rest, and Afton is damned to hell.

There's that, but there's also the fact that PJ Heywood was racist on Twitter at one point to China, so Scott probably saw that and decided to not work with him anymore and to ditch the accent he gave Afton.

I strongly stand by the Aftons being British, mostly because of familiarity and consistency and stuff, but also because it helps give them that extra pinch of uniqueness. William’s new voice portrays him as a really generic, dramatic evil villain and it kinda disappointed me. I love the calm, collected, scheming robotics mastermind murder man voice of classic William because that’s how I’ve always known him to be. it also links him to Michael and Elizabeth in a pretty noticeable way. they seem to be the few characters that have an entirely different accent than the whole rest of the franchise. and it gives us even more to speculate about, as if we didn’t already have enough… but yeah. British Aftons forever 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
