That's a terrific story about your indexed NIV.

That's funny about your professor not allowing the tabs. I had a similar situation, except the professor didn't allow my NIV because he wanted us to have one of the four main reliable translations (I think it was four). If I remember correctly, he only allowed KJV, NKJV, ESV, and NASB. I also had to go to a store near by and buy whatever I could find. I ended up with a super cheap NKJV. I don't think I used it except in the class.

I think some thing that not many are aware of when it comes to the Message, is that Eugene Peterson never claimed it is a translation. He did the message as a Bible help (companion), to us with your primary translation.

Oh you have so many beautiful and interesting Bibles!!! I'm like you, I just love, love, love Bibles and it is the first section in any Book store I head to! Every time I mention to one of my sisters that I'm expecting a parcel they always say, 'Not another Bible!?!' I just can't help myself, when I see shelves of Bibles I'm like a kid in a candy store! My jaw dropped when you said your church gives away Schuyler bibles! That is an incredibly generous thing to do and shows how much your church values the people receiving them. I have to say I haven't read the NASB much at all. I have a 'beater' copy of one so I will have to give it a chance. I knew an SDA Pastor once who said he really likes that version too. I like the AMP. but it is terrible for straight out reading. Very wordy, but a great study tool though. I have never owned a parallel Bible and I think they would be a bit bulky and the print would be too small. It's hard when your eyesight is not great, to find a Bible that is large enough print to read but not so big you need a crane to lift it! I had to laugh when you referred to the NIV Bible as the 'Nearly Inspired Version' ......thanks...now I'm going to see that every time I see 'NIV' anywhere! lol! I actually really do like the NIV and I know it cops a lot of criticism, but I find it one of the easiest ones to read. I still marvel at how I managed to understand the KJV I was converted from, when I was only 14 yrs old. Even today I struggle a bit with the KJV, but I think the Holy Spirit was definitely helping me a LOT at that time. He even helped me know where to start reading....the 4 Gospels....I had never seen a Bible before and had no idea there was a special section in it about Jesus! I think that is one of the main reasons I really treasure the Bible so much. It is a living, life-giving book. I can honestly say, if I had to give up every possession I have except for one thing, I would choose my Bible. Thanks again for sharing all your Bibles with us. I'm sorry this reply is so long...I'm a bit long-winded when I get onto my favourite topic!
